Cars are only a necessity because it's literally illegal to build dense housing. The suburb shown is literally 4 cars wide, even if you wanted to it is not possible to build a street like the bottom below, because streets have to be four cars wide by law. Streets are wide because of cars, housing is not dense because it's illegal to build dense housing. Hence it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy where car manufacturers make you dependant on cars
