Wan Piss established a grand world of pirates. The goal is to find the One Piece, some sort of unspecified grand treasure. But the author didn't want to bother with writing a complicated storyline. So he established a linear pathway to the objective, by having the equator of the planet be an isolated band with a one-way current. He even set up convenient mountains across the equator to serve as start/finish lines.

The compass works as a "quest marker" telling the characters where their next island adventure is. And the rules of the compass are artificially constructed to make certain they are forced to spend time having an adventure on the island instead of just skipping it. Each island conveniently has its own climate system, so the author doesn't need to think about where the island is positioned geographically. And each island is its own self-contained storyline that is completely isolated from the greater story. This way the author can keep adding a near infinite amount of islands and stretch the story to infinity, with each one becoming its own self-contained episode. One PIece is so long nobody will actually watch it all.

One Piece introduces so many characters nobody can ever remember them all. In the later chapters, these minor characters consume the maority of the screentime. The artwork is so cluttered with textboxes, reaction panels and random characters in the background that isn't almost impossible to discern what's happening. It follows a consistent formula between arcs that repeats over and over, and nowadays is just your typical shonen power manga, except dragging out the story 100x longer
