Anon, you need to update your mental model in two aspects
1) Akemi is the most subscribed male vtuber, having passed Kuzuha already and by quite a margin
2) Vox success is undeniable but it hinged entirely into an audience that was fickle, that people KNEW they were fickle, people FORETOLD they were fickle and they left.
His success is similar to Lil Nax X with "Old Town Road", a colored folk singing a hillbilly tune about horses that went viral with the wrong crowd for his target and then faded into obscurity

I assume when people are talking about "success" they mean "continuous success"
