It's basically a dream that keeps repeating over and over again until the main character remembers the promise she made with her psycho, schizo, super dyke girlfriend. Ariane died in a way she didn't want to and it pissed her off so much she created a bioresonance timeloop/dream field that covers the entire planet while also bringing others along to make them suffer too.

It's why there's so many dead (You)s around the place. This isn't the first time you've been doing this shit. The promise is to remember to kill Ariane so the endless loops finally come to a stop. The game's pretty ambiguous, but if one thing's clear, the main character keeps going through loops until she fulfills the promise.
