ITT: Mysteries only us gamers care about

The identity of "Inezh," portraying actress of Jill Valentine in the first Resident Evil game. Officially, she was a high school student with no prior acting experience. Mikami regretted having her on board once production started the shoot at the Tama River. "Inezh" frequently complained about the mosquitos and wished to wrap things up earlier. No one knows where she is now, but I'd be mighty interested to hear her reflect on her experience.

Contrary to some rumors, Irish actress Una Kavanagh did not portray Jill, and when asked, she curtly replies, "No" to all inquiries.

Also, I should note that it really sounds like the actors are native speakers, but it should be kept in mind that the directors were not and that kind of fucks things up in the voice acting department. Jon St John went into detail about this in some Q&A session at a convention. I think Blue Stinger was the game he was talking about but he would say lines as he would naturally and the directors, who were Japanese, didn't like the delivery at all and forced him to say it in a really strange tone. Wish I could dig it up but it was pretty interesting.

I didn't suspect all of the actors of NOT being native speakers. Just Jill's.

Those directors probably weren't professionals. Voice acting in (mainstream) games was still relatively new.

The "worse" they are, the more I like them. Well, except for Deep Fear, I gotta admit that is REALLY bad; but I love obscure games with bad voice acting like The Note on PSX and Overblood or Mansion of Hidden Souls on SegaCD.

Semi-related, I've heard from native English speakers who have spent time doing technical translations in Japan (Japanese-English instruction manuals for machinery, tools and the like) that sometimes their bosses who only know English at an intermediate level will argue that something incorrect with grammar is actually correct, and because they're the boss what they say goes. So Japanese directors probably thought the way the English was being said sounded better and more dramatic when it just didn't sound right to a native English listener.

This thread really sparked my interest so I've been researching the cast now for the past couple of hours. I read through a thread on The-Horror about the original RE actors and it seems they've hunted most of them down except Jill (Inezh).

Barry Burton

>Also worked as RE1's voice over director (lol).
>Other works include Virtua Fighter (Sarah Bryant), Tekken (Nina Williams), Super Street Fighter II (Chun-Li), Street Fighter Alpha (Karin) and Sonic CD (Amy Rose).

Albert Wesker
>Guy named Sergio Jones (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0016015/).).
>Seems like he was just a normal TV/Movie actor.
>Appeared in a few episodes of Baywatch.

Chris Redfied
>Was voiced by a guy named Scott McCulloch (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0566124/)), but it's unsure if he also acted in the intro.
>Was also in some Tekken and Time Crisis games.

Jill Valentine
>Biggest mystery, no one knows who it really is (as you've probably learned from this thread).
>Mikami says she was a High School student (~16-18 years old in 1995).
>Possible identities are:
>Irish Actress Una Kavanagh (She has denied any involvement, doesn't fit the suspected age).
>Pornographic Actress Wendy Rice.
>Small-time actress Michelle Yerger.

I'm personally starting to think that Inezh is the adult star Wendy Rice. They look very similar and she would have been 20 years old in 1995 when the intro was most likely filmed. Mikami said she was a High School kid but he probably just assumed so do to how young she was/looked. Pic related.

Exactly, people think that it is a flaw in the game but most people just see it as a product of the times. I mean yeah we had voice samples before but not actual speech like a movie, you know? Regarding voice acting in general in video games of that era: I have a question of people here who are native english speaker (australia, USA, Great Britian, etc): at the time did you ever consider VAs in games bad? Like, did you really think the phrasing, the accents, etc were really bad?

I'm just saying because, I personally never did (and I still don't, there is a lot of charm to this kind of VA); but I wonder if that's because I'm not a native english speaker (I do have a degree in English so I do know a lot about the language, its different accents, etc).

Yeah, to a native speaker, most 90s video game voice overs are REALLY stiff and awkward. My friends and I giggled at "Jill sandwich" and "master of unlocking" back in the day.

However, around the same time, I was playing Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, which were really the first times I ever thought "Wow, these dudes can fucking act." in a video game, and to this day I don't think game voice overs have been that good very many times. Kain was Megatron in the Transformers cartoon; the elder god was a dude named Tony Jay, whose name you're probably reading for the first time, but if you grew up in the 80s or 90s you've heard his ominous voice a million times. Nowadays they spend half the budget getting A-list actors in the game, only to have them phone in the performance because they don't take video games seriously or have no experience in a sound booth.

tl;dr Of course you can tell whether or not someone sounds natural speaking your native tongue.

Probably around 5th generation when voice acting became more prominent in video games. For console games, most voice work was limited to samples like grunts, yells, hadoukens etc. There were arcade games like >>997169 mentioned that allowed for more voice acting because of the hardware. By 5th gen it became more standardized, and often done by people with no voice experience and done in one take like someone mentioned earlier. Games like Resident Evil and Megaman 8 really stand out as awkward-sounding. Some stuff like Star Ocean 2 really sounded like it was done on poor-quality microphones and/or the actors were standing too close to them.

Simon Templeman never portrayed Megatron. It was Frank Welker in the 80s and David Kaye on Beast Wars. He was, however, in Charmed as the Angel of Death.
