Pleb.

Anyway, I remember Xardion. That track is pretty cool, but the rest of the game was rather generic. I do like the extremely stylized artwork for such a tiny sprite.

Abuse of bass guitar? You do know that a good bass line is the key for creating a good rhythm or vice versa, right?

Then again, some SNES developers in the beginning used that particular bass sample like it was going out of style. It's flat, dry, and weird. For example, Final Fight on SNES sounds hilarious compared to the arcade

Commander Keen for me... maybe Prince of Persia. Definitely the first two games I ever played, not certain which came first.

Anyone else?

This thing spawned my love of JRPGs until I became disillusioned with them about 20 years later when I got into actual tabletop. I was 3 years old when I played it and understood nothing, other than I was having fun.

really hard to say since my earliest memories of games are muddled but I'd either go with Wolfenstein 3d or Doom on PC, of not that, then Tetris or Metroid II on Gameboy

My parents were pretty anti-video games so I never played any until my dad brought home a brand new PowerMac, and some new game called Marathon that had a sweet looking box. I was about 7, so I was able to play it just long enough for my dad to find out it was about shooting aliens before it was taken away. So cool.

Yep...

Funny how this series really hasn't evolved a whole lot over the last 25 years either. Guess I'm ok with that since I liked it back then just fine.

I can't be absolutely positive of chronology, but it was either
C64: Hard Hat Mac
Atari 2600: River Raid or Boxing

Earliest arcade game I remember (and still fucking adore) is Pang!

The narrative and party structures changed with every game, it may not be huge changes but saying every DQ is the same is a dumb statement.
2: fixed 3-member party, somewhat open
3: big chunks of the world to travel about, 4-player party you can choose and replace whenever you want
etc.

I liked it, but it (and most other FPS games until about 2005) made me extremely nauseous as a kid. I don't know why it happened, or why it stopped with more recent games. I liked Freespace a lot more, which oddly didn't make me nauseous at all.
