That lag was sadly the most memorable moment. Shame because I remember liking it overall more than the first game.

When you break it down, just about every bonus stage ever is a gimmick stage. Bonus stages by definition are just 'gimmick stages'.

A “gimmick” is pretty loosely defined. It’s also weird because some games are based around having a new “gimmick” every level, and some games are based on a gimmick. But heres a shot keeping it restricted to 2d platformers.

>Almost everything in Donkey Kong Country 2. Minecarts in the original.

>Most of Wario Land 2

>Most of mischief makers

>Most of the gimmick stages in Super Mario Bros 3 were great. Sun level, Goomba’s Shoe level, the cave with a secret exit, mario eating fish, etc.

>The Special and Star Zones in Super Mario World. Most of the bonus stages in Yoshis Island have a gimmick.

>Sonic’s Special Stages or the Casino Zone in 2. Or the plane level. Snowboarding in 3.

There’s all kinds of borderline stuff though like the final boss in Kirby 64 plays like a rail-shooter, Kid Icarus has 2 levels that are Zelda 2 style dungeons rather than side scrollers. Mario Land has shmup levels.

That's not a gimmick, just some sweet parallax effects; the gameplay still plays just like the rest of the game.

Unlike the more powerful Mega Drive which can easily do "mode 7" effects using software, the SNES must rely on a prebaked hardware effect to achieve scaling and rotation, which is built in such a way that it cannot do vertical split screen.

I think to be classified a gimmick, it has to switch gameplay entirely. DKC2 adds new elements every level, but it's still a platformer throughout. Until Screeches Sprint, which is a legit gimmick race.

Yoshi's Island Final Boss is also a great gimmick.

>prebaked hardware
Kids after watching Digital Foundry once... It's cute. Godspeed young Anon, you will acquire many wisdoms throughout your life, so you must always be ready to become ever wiser. I know give some wisdoms for you:
>The world ain't gonna wait for you. You should know what you wanna do as a teenager, and if you don't, do something anyway
>You don't need to go to college, seriously
>Don't be a bullshitter, seriously. Be yourself
>Don't be a people pleaser. If you're good natured and sharp, then helping others will be a natural byproduct of seeking your own interests. People notice when you are attempting to impress them, which renders them unimpressible.
>If an idiot refuses help and cannot be convinced, it's their life
>It's all daunting, but the hardest part is convincing yourself to participate
>Prebaked refers to precalculated graphics like shadowmaps. It's software and entirely stored digitally as a file to be read; hardware features cannot be prebaked
