Greetings fellow saturnchad. Its been a few days since I played on mine but last time I was trying to up my game on sega rally and dead or alive, the latter has really impressive graphics for a game of that generation by the way. I will try to finish panzer dragoon 1 soon and deep fear. I am into fighting games too. There are many really good games, i dont know much about rpgs for saturn besides grandia and PD saga and I havent played any yet. Peace.

Me and a friend played Dragon Force today. It's amusing watching someone try to figure the game out when they have virtually no experience playing games in the genre. We played Virtua Fighter Remix after.

I'm not even playing my Saturn, got all the games for it and finished them back in the 00s, since then I've been letting the games gather dust and go up in value by an order of magnitude. If this continues, I'll be able to retire on my collection.

>>9668653
>anyone got some 2d platformers to recommend? Keio 2 and Astal look fun

Keio 2 is nice for the WTF value but it's really clunky and slow paced. Astal is largely the same, but has no WTF value - once the novelty of "omg huge sprites" wears off, it's just an average to poor 2d platformer.

Earthworm Jim 2 is a great 2d platformer but it's nothing more than you could get on the 16-bit systems, plus it was ported by morons who fucked up the background art. The up side is that it has CD Audio music and the music KICKS A METRIC FUCKTON OF ASS. That is, if you like italian tarantella and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. If not, it only has ~2 good tracks (Tangerines and Lorenzo's Soil). Worth getting it as just an audio cd.

Super Tempo and Silhouette Mirage look impressive on paper, but it takes something like 1-2 hours to finish them, and they both have a different gameplay quirk per stage, which makes it really annoying because you have to figure out each level instead of just gunning it through. Great graphics though.

Metal Slug is half as impressive as on Neogeo, it has a fuckton of slowdown (on every single cart, not just the action replay, proof: I have the original disc and 1mb cart). It's also missing a lot of animation, but still has twice as much intact as the PSX port. Up side is the combat school and the art gallery having an extra high resolution gallery. Unfortunately the combat school has a bug that prevents you from reaching the max score and unlock the hidden super dragon mode.

unironically the best 2d platformer on the system is probably Castlevania SOTN, even though it looks like arse and slows down constantly when compared to the Playstation original.

Thanks! It's a little disappointing to hear about the lack of standout 2d platformers for the Saturn considering it's proficiency at 2d graphics but I'll be sure to check most of these out

the genre was dying by the time, and the saturn didnt sell well enough to change that. plus, the system isn't that good at 2d. it just has more memory. the playstation can do better 2d, it just lacks the ram to do so (check Skullmonkeys).

Had a Saturn as a kid, but didnt really appreciate it as much as I probably should have back then. Always wanted to get back into it when i discovered more of its japanese library. Picked up some fun stuff last year that ive been finally going through, though usps is a bunch of fuck ups who delivered one game to the wrong house and refused to tell me which one and will do fuck-all to retrieve it. Fortunately I was only out 10 burgerbux. Im still not seeing the "2d powerhouse" I always heard it claimed to be, but it has enough unique stuff that its library is fun to explore with a bit more knowledge of whats out there.

Does anyone know if you can use an action replay to change the blood in house of the dead to red in the japanese version? For some reason I always thought the green blood was only in the US version.

I'm about half way through Story of Thor 2 (Legend of Oasis). It's a visually nice game that's easy to come back to and figure out what you need to do.

Also playing Croc, previously I'd only played it on PS1 so visually it's a very pleasant surprise on Saturn.

I play Jewels of the Oracle for a couple of hours each week - just to chip away at a couple of puzzles. Some of them are really obscure but it's worth getting into for a relaxing game.

Finally, since I completed the brilliant Shutokou Battle 97, I've been playing the slightly less brilliant Touge King Spirits 2. Thankfully this one has 3D Pad support where then original Touge didn't. You can draw a lot of comparisons to Shutokou 97 with this game, but personally the handling model isn't anywhere near refined and all-round lacks some polish. It's still fun though.

I live in New Zealand and was thinking for a long time about getting a Saturn. One popped up online - a Japanese console modded to run on NZ AC without the need for a step-down converter and I decided to take the plunge. I'm glad I did. It's super cool to be able to collect some JP titles and have the console work with my tv without any extra finagling.

I've met a few people who grew up with a Dreamcast in NZ, but not a Saturn. It's unheard of. Online people always mentioned the controller and its dpad in high regard when it comes to fighting games. It was really novel getting one in hand. The face buttons, especially the top row, stick out quite a lot. They feel small in diameter compared to how notably they stick out and it was kind of a bizarre feeling at first. The dpad is indeed good for fighting games. The shoulder buttons feel like mouse buttons, which was a surprise. I didn't see anyone mention this curiousity.

I ended up picking up Street Fighter Zero 2, X-men VS Street Fighter, Puyo Puyo Sun and Outrun (aw yeah). Zero 2 and Outrun in particular are my favourites.

Side note on Puyo Puyo Sun:

I was a little disappointed with Puyo Sun compared to the mega drive port of Puyo 2 that I had been playing on Wii VC (in regards to the single-player campaign). The flow of gameplay doesn't have as much breathing room to make large chains as did Puyo 2. So there's an emphasis on speed rather than combos which means well-played matches (by Puyo Sun's requisite, as far as I can tell) end in a paltry 40 seconds or so, and are deprived of the joy of creativity that comes with the chaining system. If you don't go for really quick 2-chains at the top of a match, then the opponent gets the upper hand and the AI really runs away on you such that it is really difficult to turn the match back around. I got the impression that Puyo 2's comeback potential on a losing match was more viable - and so the whole act of playing Puyo feels more excitingly unpredictable in that one.

My Saturn has recently started to have trouble reading discs. The guy at my local game store says he can fix it, if I can get a new laser. Is there anything I need to know before I buy it? Can I just buy any replacement Saturn laser online, or do I need one specific to my model? It died the day after I got my copy of Saturn Bomberman too, such a bummer.

Dithering techniques are common on the Saturn. The Saturn has issues with transparency so this classic "checkerboard" dithering technique was used frequently. On CRTs, the pixels "blend" together creating the illusion of translucent textures. The same technique was used in many 2D games of the '90s.

Thought the PlayStation was gonna fail, figured they didn't know what they were doing. Oops. Ended up with a 20 or 30 game collection. It's the best memories I had of gaming. Ended up with all 3 systems and it was definitely Saturn, N64 and psx from best to worst. Sega was fun, so was N64. What sucked it's I knew the psx was winning around when tomb raider came, but I held out hope till when burning rangers came out realizing things were drying up.

Puyo Sun got the sun system specifically to lower the barrier of entry and make the game more viable for less expert players. Puyo 2 requires you to build super tall towers really fast, and even if the other player counters, you can build another tower by the time his chain finishes. Then it's a race to whoever builds the biggest tower while the other players chain is playing out.
Puyo Sun favors smaller chains which (when doing a counter) will trigger sun puyos that can give you huge combo bonus. this allows you to counter even without building full screen chains. And when you have two expert players, it can bring the match to a conclusion faster. Personally I think it is more balanced, but it's less impressive in that it does not require you to be an expert chain builder.

I'm gonna hijack this thread. Here is my current Saturn library: got too lazy to take them all out, going to write the titles of the rest of the games:
>vandal hearts
>resident evil
>joshikousei
>bulk slash
>albert odyssey
>policenauts (best version of this game)
>rayearth
>akumajou dracula x
>vampire savior
>magical drop III
>cotton 2
>sakura wars
>grandia (best version of this game)
>tokimeki taisen
>shining force 3
>burning rangers
>zoku gussun oyoyo
>princess crown
>shining the holy christ in heaven
>napple tale isn't a saturn idk why it's with them
Let me know if you know of any games that I should enjoy.

By that point I'd already decided on a Saturn over PC-FX and PS, but I recall getting it maybe a month after the U.S. launch, not immediately.
First game I got was Magic Knight Rayearth, together with a region-free cart, from NCS. (Somehow those guys are still around, ncsx.com)
A couple months later I'd grown annoyed at swapping between my region-free cart and memory cart so I sold my U.S. Saturn and bought a Japanese model.

>Devil Summoner games
my roommate bought these
I haven't played them myself but he seemed to like them
I remember he later got the PS1 version of one of them where they let you save some character who dies in Saturn version
>Blue Seed
kind of simple but I liked it
I vaguely remember something about collecting panties or panty shots or panty photographs
never watched the anime
>Dragon Force
This is alright but I played it not long after Kichikuou Rance so Dragonforce felt shallow by comparison
>Super Robot Wars F
I lent the second part to an acquaintance and then he moved away, so I only played the first half/game. I recall doing a lot of reloading trying to trigger special story events
>Sentimental Graffiti
Man this was so heavily promoted and played up in Japanese Saturn magazines at the time
But it turned out to be boring and I dropped it before even clearing a single girl
Maybe I'll give it another chance some day
>Angelique
Tried this out when I was trying out all sorts of genres I'd never played before but it turns out I am in fact straight
>Yumimi Remix
Bought this and then never got around to playing it; I promise I'll try it some day
>albert odyssey
Nothing remarkable but nothing wrong with it either, I'd call it "pleasant"
>rayearth
Pretty cool, the 2D graphics parts are pretty, kind of on the easy side
Unlike Blue Seeid, for this one I'd seen the anime (well, the first season) before playing the game
>sakura wars
High budget, everyone splooged over this, but the characters were too silly for me; well I've never been a Akahori Satoru fan
>grandia
I'm more into 2D games but this was still pretty cool
>shining force 3
I played part 1 of this but barely remember it
>princess crown
Never had it on Saturn but picked it up for PSP a few years ago, will play some time

I'm finding it hard to get along with Wangan Dead Heat because it predates the 3D Pad as far as I can tell.
I've started playing Code R and the drifty controls are quite enjoyable. But the Story mode is very text heavy so unplayable for non JP speaker. There is a versus mode though that is good.
My only criticism is the rotating background/skybox is vomit inducing in first person mode.

Update: I've played a bit of Machi

The game is not bad. Basically a fun VN with a tone that varies wildly based on who you're playing as. The Yakuza guy and gamer detective are both very whimsical, while the TV script-writer guy's scenario is a pure existential horror nightmare. What I don't understand is how the selling point of the game is the 'Zapping' feature that lets you leap from one scenario to another. The idea is that events in one timeline will influence others, so you need to make certain decisions in one and zap over to another timeline to see the end of the route. You can't see the end of a route if you never zap I think.

Pretty cool concept. It's the predecessor to 428 Shibuya Scramble if you guys know about it
