Well fuck me, this actually wasn't that bad. I'd even say that this game is enjoyable for the most part. This and Zelda 2 are the prime examples of overhated. I guess I need to try Knuckles' Chaotix now, maybe I'll like it too. Don't get me wrong, I don't take my opinions from the internet and 3D Blast is by no means a masterpiece but when a game is trashed THAT hard it really does put me off

>> No.9649780

3D isn't even that terrible, the game is just mediocre and kind of boring and a huge step down from Sonic 3, but it's probably the best out of those shitty mid 90s Sonic products. Chaotix could have been okeyish too but it's pretty much an unfinished game, and the link mechanic isn't worth a full game so it gets old pretty fast. I would call it bad but not offensively bad, more like on the verge of being acceptable.

Still, you have to understand that Sonic was hold to pretty high standars so "acceptable" wasn't going to cut it. Now we're used to all sort of crappy Sonic shit so things like 3D Blast seems like masterpieces in comparison.

The Saturn version was way better and nobody played it. Even worse that the director's hack that fixes a ton of problems is only for the 16-bit version.

Yes but as you've already said, it's also a masterpiece if we compare it to other Sonic platformers from the 90s outside of the main trilogy+CD. I haven't played all of them, still need to play Blast, Tails Skypatrol, Tails Adventure and Knuckles' Chaotix but so far 3D Blast is the best. Now that I've said it, these are the games I'll be playing for the next couple days

Chaotix is a fun novelty. The bungee mechanics are fun. The game is too easy and too long and I think that's where it suffers the most. There's also that one shitty level in Amazing Arena too.

I've always defended Sonic 3D Blast, even considering one of my favorites as a kid when I played it on Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PS2, and that compilation gave me access to pretty much everything that Sonic was in before Sonic Adventure, with a few notable exceptions. I don't know what it is about it that captivated me, but the fact that it was 3D, even though it was 16-Bit, was incredible... yes, I know it's isometric, but I can move and platform on 3 axis, while usually there would only be 2, so it felt 3D when playing at least. I agree that controls aren't ideal, though playing with an analog stick helps, and there isn't much platforming because of said controls, you don't go as fast as earlier installments and there's a need to collect flickies, but it's still fun to me, a stellar OST, impressive graphics and pseudo 3D, excellent level design... it's the closest Sonic had to a collectathon, before Sonic Frontiers at least, and I love it.

Have to agree. Only disadvantages are the addition of load times and The Final Fight's song is a major downgrade (rest of the OST is incredible though). Need to play the Director's Cut.

this game sucks ass and Im tired of apologists saying its underrated. The bosses are garbage, spring yard zone is absolute fucking shit level design, the ice/lava stages are boring and only notable for having water/fire shields, and whatever the last level(s) were called plays like complete shit with all the pipes and those poles shooting in every direction

the saturn special stages are fun but theyre just rehashing the halfpipes from 2

I played it via the Mega Collection on Gamecube when I was a kid and I was actually surprised when I learned later that the game is massively hated. The game itself is good, and the music is amazing. I love the Rusty Ruin track especially. It's not the best game in the world or anything, but it's also not a bad game by any means. I actually rank it as one of the better games on the console.

>I guess I need to try Knuckles' Chaotix now, maybe I'll like it too.
I actually bought a 32X specifically to try out Chaotix. I thought it would be absolute shit because of how much hate it gets, but I actually really enjoyed the game. Chaotix is nothing to write home about, but it's not as bad as people say it is.

I'm pretty sure most of the people who hate on 3D Blast and Chaotix have never actually played either game. Or if they have, they probably just booted up the rom in an emulator, played for 30 seconds and said "this is stupid" before dismissing it. I don't know why but it seems like Sonic fans throw a massive fit whenever a game in the series breaks away from traditional Sonic gameplay - even when it's a spin-off. Right now I'm playing Tails Adventure for the first time and I'm having a blast! I can't believe that Tails Adventure gets shit when it's so fucking good. It feels so bizarre to call it a hidden gem since it's literally a Sonic game, but it is absolutely a hidden gem.

I played 3D Blast for the first time through Mega Collection Plus too. I enjoyed playing it but never got far.
And also I beat Blast and the two Tails games, they all sucked just like all of the Game Gear Sonic titles except for the very first one which was great (played the Master System version though). Blast and Labyrinth are the worst. As for Tails Adventure, ironically enough during the first hour of my playthrough I thought to myself
>woah, no way, this is shaping up to be better than Metroid 2
but even though Metroid 2's locations are even more samey, Tails Adventure got old pretty quick. And the bosses are terrible. But on the other hand it was very, VERY weird to see Aspect put that much effort into a game. I mean, even though I didn't like it this is a full-on adventure on the Game Gear, complete with varied vehicle segments, etc. And to top that all of Tails' sprite animation is amazing. Again, it's Aspect we are talking about, really strange.
Also pic related reminds me of Harpuia from MMZ

Blast has some of the best bosses in the pre-Dimps games, though? Including the true final boss. It doesn't have particularly genius boss design, but most 16-bit Sonic bosses are pushovers and most 8-bit Sonic bosses are really basic. Also, the aesthetics and music are really cool, so that already makes Blast better than Triple Trouble. It's still not really worth playing if you're not a Sonic fan though

>Including the true final boss. It doesn't have particularly genius boss design
It's kind of bullshit though, I'd never be able to beat this game if it wasn't for the 99 rings they give you for the final boss. The first phase is alright but the second one is just a shitshow that makes you tank damage and abuse your i-frames

>> No.9655107

>>9655047
It's not particularly bullshit, it's just poorly explained by the game. The way it's done is you land on the platform to turn his face into an arrow and then hit him quickly after that, then duck in a corner to dodge the attack. It is disappointing for a final boss though.
