Is PS2 emulation good yet?

>> No.9465065

good enough to play most of the games worth playing

It's decent, depends on what you consider good

Will it mostly work without FMVs breaking and shit?
I don't really care if it's "cycle accurate", since I just barely know what that means to begin with.

It's fantastic if you have a ryzen series or i5 series made in the last 10 years.

no
it probably never be

It's better, recent updates have helped PCSX2 a lot with some new blood steering the ship. Though it's also in a weird place where the 'official' versions are in some weird limbo and you need to grab the nightlies which are so far ahead they feel like a different emulator. Still by no means perfect though, I'll always advise just sticking a hard drive in an old PS2 instead.

Games are still buggy as ever, so no.

Nightly builds are pretty great right now

works for me

>> No.9465221

>>9465060
Yea, I use it all the time. Just go get the test version and follow the guides for setting up the game you want.

>> No.9465262

It's good enough for most use cases. It still has input lag so have fun beating Godhand on kick me sign, but for casually playing most of the library it works fine.

It has gotten better significantly, but it still can't play pic related properly.

PCSX2 is getting pretty good, they really cleaned up their act during the last couple of years. I have never used Play! (purei) but the guy is still working on it.
There's also dobiestation but the last commit was back in April https://github.com/PSI-Rockin/DobieStation and it's in a really experimental state.

I just want Xbox emulation to be good bros... I don't care if the games are on PS2 or PC, I want the Xbox versions of Halo and Fable and KOTOR and everything else, just like when I was a kid

Xemu has pretty good compatibility

if you have a non-potato processor. It plays Ninja Gaiden Black like nobody's business.

Yes (for the most part)

However, MX4SIO has been a godsend for those who still have a working PS2 though. Just buy one of RGEEK's MX4ISO kits off of Amazon and you are practically good to go.

However, the Duckstation emulator is still the best way to play PS1 games.

PCSX2 use to be incredibly mediocre for the longest time but over the past two or so years it's become incredibly good thanks to many changes in the backend from new contributors and changing its UI framework from WxWidgets to Qt6.

xemu has made great strides. A lot of games run fairly well in it now.

You know you can play all of those on PC right?

>> No.9467607

It's good enough to run with minimal configuration on a low end gaeming pc.

However, it's not quite there for normies/"virtual consoles" and ARM devices with no configuration. You'd spend less money soft modding a ps2.

Every six months or so I see a thread about how PCSX2 is "finally" good now, I redownload the latest version and try it, and shit still has microstutters in every game I try.

This is the correct answer. The Nightlies PCSX2 is a huge difference. Practically every criticism I had against emulation went away the last few months. So much more updates and UI changes that were desperately needed. The pace is great.

Yeah, it's crazy just how different PCSX2 Stable and PCSX2 Nightly is these days. They're like different emulators entirely.

Yup. Nightly builds are key. It's why the ps2 emulator works so god damn good on Steam Deck because some Chad made the Nightly build the default

The Nightly builds have been getting really good. It's almost like a completely different emulator compared to the stable build

>> No.9470258

>>9465060
define "good".
You can play like 98% of the library at native resolutions in software render mode and they'll be fine. You may get occasional lines on textures or weird hiccups, but most games are playable without much fuss.
Now, if you want to do directx/vulkan hardware rendering, you're getting about 60% of the library working.
For example, Shadow Hearts 1 has ridiculous slowdown when not in software render mode.
Shadow Hearts 2 has black screen whenever the judgement ring spins for combat. These are 10 year old problems that will probably never be fixed because "you can just play it at 240p in software mode"
That's the general vibe of PS2 emulation.

>> No.9470327

>>9465071
Yes if devs added a hack for your game to play FMV on a software render.
