PCE is actually a very good console, And much fo the best games never left Japan like Sylphia.

Really cool setting, aesthetics and story, plus a haunting opening theme. Hellenic themed vertical shooter, where you play as a warrior who died fighting the monsters summoned by some evil wizard. The gods reward her bravery and grant her special powers by turning her into a magical flying creature.

It's a solid game. Are there better and more intense shooters for other later consoles? Yes. But I have a soft spot for STGs that are more than "space ship fights bad guys in space". The fantasy setting is really neat, especially one that is treated straight rather than whacky.

I have fond fucking memories of Liquid Kids from one summer in my childhood. Swimming up to the beach after diving into the sea from a cliff, toweling off, getting an ice cream bar from home and walking to the arcade in the next town over with my cousins and dumping so many fucking lire into that machine (and others). Then, when the sky started to go a little red, heading back home, kicking olives that had fallen onto the road from the trees lining it and chasing lizards along the way.
The TG16/PCE version is okay, but it doesn't look or sound as nice as the arcade one.

Solid game that many overlook as an inferior Cotton clone, but in many ways I like it more. Also has some of the best graphics on the console, which is even more impressive that it's just a stock PCE!

I love the upgrade system in it -where you collect currency then spend it in shops dotted throughout the stages (taken from Fantasy Zone). You can see attacks taken from Gradius, and the Airship level is likely inspired by SMB3.

Does anyone have any information about the western Cotton release? we know it happened because we have ads for it and the specific release date. However, I've very rarely seen anyone discuss actually owning it as a child. This means it must have been a limited run.

Obviously in 2022 there's more arcade accurate ports out there but in 1993 it was a solid version that held close to the arcade original. And I still say to this day it has the best version of the soundtrack.

Cool home port, that is in some ways better than the arcade original. It changes the game from an isometric to top down viewpoint.

Character design by Gainax so the cover has this Princess Maker look to it. The game plays as a woman in isometric trying to escape a dungeon. Prince of Persia but Iso-metric is a good description.

Is it a good game? Eh... I really wouldn't say so. Gameplay is a bit boring and it just feels a bit too bare bones. But the game's existance is a very interesting footnote.

Funny how the PCE is a purely accidentally successful console, and how the CD addon became Anime - the video game console. None of this was planned. The earliest titles look like advanced Famicom or Master System games.

It lucked out in Japan because it debuted before the Sega Mega Drive, and became a cheap competitor to the Famicom, then a cheap secondary console to the SFC. And the CD add-on allows for voice acting and cd audio, allowing for obvious cross over with anime. A lot of romance games, dating sims, adventure games, visual novels, detective games, quiz games, etc all with anime art styles.

Also: Virgin Dreams was worked on by Akira Kitamura (Mega Man 1-2 director) funny enough.

>>9222742
They lucked out into an aggressive marketing strategy that took all the wind out of Sega's sails. Not only did they FUCK the Mega Drive at launch with the power of the CD, they even FUCKED the Mega CD with the Duo.

People really downplay the complexity of releasing a CD drive in 1989. NEC were perfectly positioned to take advantage. What's funny is the anime style was just the only way to take advantage of the hardware, which couldn't really do FMV, so sprites were king, and they could fit a lot more of them on a disc even if they couldn't load that many at once.

It's mediocre, honestly. Just has nice character design and cutscenes (the Valis of RPGs, I guess)
There's various issues, mostly with the combat and/or the combat interface, in three out of the five games. Really only the first game and the last one (so far; not finished with the last one) have decent combat, and the first game has notable load times entering and exiting every battle.
The final game is the only one that really gets everything right enough to be worth calling good (some people will say that's like the Phantasy Star series, I suppose)...but I've still ended up enjoying the journey despite the issues. The whole series has one cast of characters and some connected story threads, unlike most RPG series, so it's fun seeing things tie together.

I'll be honest, if you go through the PCE library few games stand out as 10/10 masterpieces in the same way that Famicom, Mega Drive, or Sufami games do. But there's a lot of 6-8 out of 10 games that are pretty good. Plus it has a lot of quirky titles, or games that make serious use of the PC Engine.

Relaly before 1995 no one really saw anything like Tokimeki Memorial before. A romance and a sim game in one package? Totally nuts. It was such a hit, that it was ported to everything. Supposedly the story became so well known and cliche, that elements like "lover waiting for you by the tree" became referenced in Japanese media.

So personally I'd say Rondo and Tokimeki represent the absolute peak of the console.

No shit, you're not going to enjoy the PCE library if you don't know Japanese. Linda3 is the peak of the console. It's the only JRPG I've ever played that actually understands the concept of game balance. Everything else is either braindead easy or you just grind a bit and it becomes braindead easy. In Linda, it doesn't matter if you grind up to level 40 in the starting zone. It makes no difference to the difficulty of the rest of the game. Not because the game does level scaling garbage to make your progress worthless, but because overkilling animals gives you nothing, and you need to capture 100 of them within the time limit. The earlier scenarios require fewer animals, so you can get to grips with the concept without being forced to restart.

But I guess some zoomer tuber hasn't made a video about how this game was "the progenitor to Pokemon and Monster Hunter" yet, so you don't know about it. Or how it managed to get an 18+ recommendation for depictions of gore and violence, when every other yellow label at the time was for sexual content.

A lot of the best and most interesting CD games are the visual novels, adventure games, simulation games, role palying games, quiz games, etc. They're all super text heavy.

That's why English lists focus on the action and shooter titles, since they are not focused on English. But that only covers half the system's library.

PCE-CD got both Princess Maker games, seemingly as a response to PM2's popularity. A cartridge console like the SFC could only get a scaled down version.

Undoubtably, the game library is a bit weaker than it's competitors, but also keep in mind:

1. It was originally destined to compete against the god damn Famicom
2. It was the secondary console to own, where it's CD powers gave it a niche.

Once you accept this, the PCE is more fun because you can embrace it's niche aspect, quirky games, and voice acting adventure games.

Correct, which is why it's "so okay it's alright". It's too easy and with a bit more difficulty it would grab your attention more. I think adding more projectiles on screen, and adding a ducking move (like contra) would have helped. The story is stupid and fun too.

I'm not a fan of hard games, but Last Alert does lean on the opposite side of the spectrum. Too hard or too easy is bad. But, even retrogaming being repetitive by default, Last Alert ups it a notch. Raising your rank gives you more health and access to better weapons. Also the later weapons are like missiles, so it often is better to just stick with the multi-shot M4 Carbine.

OP the thing is that Rondo is the consoles best game. Unless you are such a diehard shmup fan I can't see how this is even an argument. That isn't crapping on the pce or Turbo. I had the Turbo as a kid, was one of very few in the US who had it seemingly. It had good fun games, I have tons of nostalgia for it. I didn't even play Rondo until some point I think in either 2017 or 2018 on emulator. Its clear to me though that Rondo stands tall as the CD's and PCE most shining achievement. Its crowned jewel.

Rondo was such a great cool game I'd even argue its top 10 of the generation it was in. So its no surprise it gets most of the appreciation and love considering the console was doa in the states and considering it never even got to have a huge library here. Also its "good games" often while perhaps being honestly good still fall well short of the very best from snes and genesis. This isn't the case with Rondo though. Just felt I had to defend Rondo of Blood here.

First one is a bit like that, you do get used to it though. I'd say bonk 1 is the worst, bonk 2 is the best, bonk 3 has a really cool Cd soundtrack and gimmicks. 2 and 3 worth a shot for sure and I'd go back to 1 if you liked those, I remember playing them in order.

bonk 2 is very well designed, one of the better 16-bit platformers desu, lot of replay value

bonk 1 is crude but classic

bonk 3 feels like a lazy bonk 2 expansion pack, but its ok. its fun messing with the debug menu (can change speed and jump height)

The last regular issue was released in Sept 1996, which was after Resident Evil (may 1996).

The final special issue was released in May 1997 which was after Final Fantasy 7 (Jan 31, 1997).

I can't conceptually wrap my head around going to a store and buying PC Engine fan in one hand, and having Resident Evil or FF7 in the other.

Jinn is a plural, genie (jinni) is singular.
