Just throw it out if it dies. Why would you try to repair it? Cost value for a cheap/free set (which I assume you want if you only want it for light gun games) is worth it.

Also honestly retro games look like shit on modern displays IMO. If I had to play on a modern display I would rather just emulate so I can apply filters and remove dithering.

Perfect OP. It's me >>9144670 again. I'm here to announce to all haters, doubters and other such /vr/min, that your "opinions" and "advice" were proven to be utterly counter-productive bullshit. The DeoxIT Gold contact enhancer, that you so vehemently claimed to be snakeoil, did its fucking job and fixed EVERY issue I had on the GDM-F520, not just the ghosting, but the blurry OSD too. At last!

Had I listened to your shitty general here, this marvel of a monitor would never have been fixed. And even ignoring that, I'm just appalled at the toxicity and the pure concentrated bullshit you managed to clog half of your thread with - and then have the audacity to claim I was the problem. Your posts have now aged like milk, and I'm having the last laugh.

This monitor hasn't otherwise aged a day, the factory temp presets are accurate to 50 damn kelvin! The chance of me finding anything as good as this ever again is nil. The risk I took purchasing this monitor was absolutely worth it.

i have a little 5" set. the screen lit up but it was all white. i opened it up today and turned down the screen on the flyback and that seemed to help, there were colors in approximately the right places. the problem is that no matter where i set the focus, none of the screen was anywhere near in focus. that and the set made this clicking sound the whole time. i guess the flyback's shorted or something but i don't know.

just the man i'm looking for. i'm wondering if you could you help me identify the problem with my cpd-g420. recently i noticed a whirring sound coming from near the deflection yoke, presumably from the dynamic convergence circuit. the sound comes and goes depending on what's being displayed on the screen. also, the warping issue that's also cropped up recently is gradually getting worse. all signs are point out that is on its last legs, probably some capacitors have dried up, but what can i do to identify the problem? i don't want to pay and arm and a leg for repair services might as well get a new one at that point

This F520 produces a faint buzz depending on load too, I presume it's normal, unless yours is something clearly different.
What kind of warping? Recapping the card/board responsible for the geometry can actually be a good idea here. By messing with WinDAS you can probably find exactly what control is failing, and go from there.
This file has good description of what the circuits on this chassis do:
https://servicemanuals.us/sony/monitor/cpd-g420-cpd-g420s-cpd-g520-gdm-f520.html
However, it would be nice to get the original PDF instead of this garbage HTML convert, can anyone find one?

>could you point me to which parts are those?
I'm not qualified to make any sense of this monitor, but it seems DA card and the main board are the ones involved in most geometry.
You should really see if you can just correct it with WinDAS though. It'll be at least a temporary solution.

There's a few ways to do it, but here's what I used:
WinDAS and DosDAS https://files.catbox.moe/6eze81.rar (patched and all, works ootb)
64bit Windows 7 with this fix https://yewtu.be/watch?v=FR7apz7uWZ4
CP2102 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000120687489.html
Get some good jumpers too, you can see actually in my picture >>9184548 I'm using a serial cable to extend my jumpers in a janky way.

>also, my osd is shaking and wobbling, the higher the res/refresh frequency, the more noticeable the shaking. what's it tell you?
My F520 has this too, it's like slight noise in the exact position of the OSD. Normal? I don't know.
The no-signal screen was really blurry on mine before I greased the video boards connectors with the DeoxIT Gold, but the OSD noise still remained.

don't think so, the it wasn't doing that when i just bought it. then it gradually went from slightly noticeable to very noticeable in the span of 3 months. i got this guy in a pretty rough condition all things considered. it'll be a shame if i have to junk it, you don't come across higher-end trinitrons in my area very often. especially not for $3.

thanks for all your help, anon.

>> No.9184842

Messing with the video board could still clear it up, give it a reseat. It's the video board that generates the OSD, and it's connected to the rest of the monitor via these flimsy corroing plain metal contacts which are the cause of all the ghosting issues on F520's.

For PS2 any CRT with component input(or scart if you're euro) will work.
Just search for olds TVs locally

Any Japanons here? How's the CRT market over there? I looked at Yahoo auctions some time ago and it seemed fine, but maybe I got the wrong picture or there are better local sites to browse in search of CRTs.
What about the inputs? How common is JP-21 really? I know that YPbPr component via D-terminal was popular in the later years and also heard about some Sony TVs having a multi AV input with the same connector that you can find on a PS1/2/3, so getting quality connections shouldn't be too difficult, but I'm curious nonetheless.

It is justified. There's no need to settle for less if better things available. High-end CRT's are a world of a difference. They're engineered to a higher standard. Better reliability, convergence, focus, high voltage regulation, size, serviceability stripe/dot pitch and so on. What you're saying is a pure cope.

I feel like someone here might be able to answer my somewhat obscure PS2/PS3 interlacing question.

If I have a 60GB backwards compatible PS3 set to output 1080i and I decide to play a PS2 game, will it upscale the 480i output straight to 1080i and maintain the interlacing? Or will it internally deinterlace the 480i to 480p first (since an "HD" res is selected), then reinterlace the 480p to 1080i during the upscaling process?

Anything with component (if not EUpoor). Anything made after 2000. Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba. Don’t get HD/widescreen CRT because they convert analog to digital for upscaling which introduces input lag. Monitors with VGA or DVI. This is not comprehensive covering all cases but is generally what you need to start looking.

Or alternatively get literally any shitbox with composite because you will get bored in a month anyway.

Nobody knows, this monitor really seems exclusive to japan, nobody in the western CRT communities have any experience with it.
By specs it's supposed to be otherwise similiar to the DP2070SB and it's rebadges, but with a AdobeRGB gamut. The only difference between sRGB and AdobeRGB is that the green is much more saturated. To achieve that saturation, the green phosphor on the RDF is much slower than the red and blue.
So in practice it's a bigger liability, unless you're actually doing prints on a CRT for some damn reason. But it is the only wide gamut PC CRT monitor, a very unique tube.

also put up buying ads in your country's local ad sites

>> No.9187726

>>9187704
First just make sure you're using good cables and a good adapter, if you're using one. Common HDMI-VGA ones can really mess with the picture. See if reducing refresh rate improves the "focus", you may actually be just hitting bandwidth limits.
If your Lacie's focus works the same as my NEC, the service menu options control the edge/center balance, while the flyback pots control the overall focus. All the controls and pots depend on each other, so you'll have to mess with all of them over and over again to get it to the optimal values.
Do these adjustments on the resolution that you use the most, and want to look the best. At least on my monitor, the optimal settings do vary slightly per res. You want to also experiment with different test patterns, it may be easier to see what you're doing with something else than the basic ones in the NEC pattern generator.
I hope some of that helps.

I like the way DVDs look on it, too. ISO 200, 1/60s.
I wanted to play something more period-accurate, but didn't have any DVD like that at hand. Time Warp is retro themed anyway, the limited edition even came with an audio cassette.

Also, one weird thing I noticed: the separate input channel for RGB (it's also on AV1) is hard shifted by -10 on the H-Centre setting in the service menu compared to AV1, so the whole picture is moved to the right, which happens to be more correct than the setting on AV1.
Unfortunately it's hard to adjust this in real time, because AV1 and RGB are always 10 ticks apart (unless I set it to less than 10 on AV1, the minimum is 0) and the controls for V-Size, H-Centre and H-Size don't work when fed a 60Hz signal, so I have to switch to an empty input like AV2 or something (the settings are shared between all channels and modes) and adjust it blindly or just use a PAL game, and those seem to be all over the place when it comes to visible area.

I've had quite a different experience.
The jump from an average cheapo 96khz 19" to a mere 110khz 22" Diamondtron is so big I'll never want to go back. Then again from that to a 137khz Trinitron, another world of difference.
>blacks arent better
In my experience higher end monitors have much better coating and gamma behavior, so their blacks ARE better. Voltage regulation is a factor too, and the amount of stray electrons is also lesser. But wear is a factor.
>colors arent better,
Uniformity varies by a lot. The higher end the monitor, the higher binned the tube, the smoother and cleaner the colors. Wear is also absolutely a factor in this too though.
The stray electrons of previous point also do wash out the colors.
With insufficient voltage regulation you can never have the black level optimally set, washing out colors even further in many situations.
Also I swear the colors on my F520 are so much more saturated than on my other CRTs, but that's actually unlikely to be true - I suspect the cleanliness and higher brightness of the tube creates this illusion.
>response time
>phophors
Depends on the exact tube but there's a difference between the trailing between monitors. The short SMPTE-C phosphors on my F520 produce noticeably cleaner motion compared to my NEC, though at lower refresh rates the Sony is also much more straining.

Now, I can admit I'm quite an autist about my monitors, I recognize a person less passionate about this stuff may not experience the differences as strongly as I do.

Just getting the case opened can be an obstacle if you don't know precisely how to apply force to the top clips. And getting the video board itself out of its ridiculously tight sockets is a pain in the ass ..

Also worth nothing is the contact enhancer isn't a permanent solution. It will eventually need to be reapplied.

I found this boi today literally on my doorstep while going out to do groceries. Words cannot describe how lucky I got, I live in a large capital of a western country, nobody is throwing these anymore because people are aware that they have value as a niche retro gaming thingy and when they throw them on the streets the Romanians snatch them within 15 minutes to sell for scrap.

It's a KV-21FX30B, geometry looks good but it seems like the picture has been slightly rotated, is it easily fixable? Should I even bother? I'm so fucking happy with it, I think I'm gonna sell my 14 inch PVM and keep this one, it's not as sharp as the pvm but the colors look so vivid and the gains going from 14" (actually 13) to 21" is phenomenal, I can't believe I've been missing out for so long, it feels like putting on glasses for the first time.

Anon, your set has a "rotation" option in the service menu. Hit google and find your service manual. It'll tell you how to access your TV's service menu. However, it's just a little rotation, so you shouldn't even need much adjustment. Anyway, nice score! Enjoy some games.

I have a dumb question regarding composite. I noticed composite behaves differently on TVs than on PVMs. Playing NES on a consumer set I get a bit of a "shaky" image, certain sprites and colors seem to flicker, almost like interlaced. On the PVM the image is stable although grainy but instead there are visible wave patterns on light colored backgrounds. What is causing this disparity?

Not really, for backwards compatibilty with b/w TVs it's not RGB, but YUV/YIQ, depending on the encoding system (PAL/NTSC). Y is the luminance (black and white picture), the other two are chrominance components (color information). By combining them all you get a full color picture. So you could say it's component squished into one cable instead.

Ah, I think you're experiencing the high gamma of low brightness. Assuming you've set it properly, to the highest setting where your blacks do not glow, there's not much you can do about it on the display itself. This should be corrected with source-side gamma LUTs, but you really need a colorimeter to do it properly.

Are you sure you're pressing the right buttons? For the error table/uptime it should go like pic related. The TV should turn on with the table already visible.
For the regular service menu, replace VOL- with VOL+ in that sequence. You'll get some green text on the screen (TT), press MENU to get into the service menu.

Used CRTs can still look good provided they werent abused to hell.
In my experience, super worn CRTs are actually uncommon, but it does suck when you luck out and get one. Funnily enough, all the super worn TVs I got had black soot inside. Used TVs, but not as much, only had a fine layer of dust and still looked good.

What other anon said, and I would also recommend reading that one shmups forum to get the basic idea of what you're doing.
The main idea is to introduce the RGB signal somewhere on the circuit between the On-screen display chip and the jungle chip. You also need to keep in mind the peak-to-peak voltage that gets to the pins on jungle chip and adjust it accordingly with resistors.
Blanking is usually 5v and you get it either from your RGB input, or directly on your tv circuit board, but in this case you would need to install a switch.
Sync line is connected either to composite or s-video luma input.
Iny case the TV (KV-G21M1) had a spot for the missing teletext chip, so the mod was comparably simple: RGB and blanking goes into the teletext slot, and sync - to the composite video input.

Honestly while composite out obviously looks better for this specific effect I dont think it warrants using composite in general. I do think the original Genesis had worse composite out which made this effect look better, but even with component you can see some transparency unless you zoom in, and im not very close to my screen.

The Sonic waterfall rainbowing effect everybody is always talking about is not present in your composite photo at all. Everything just looks darker and more smeared than in the component pic.
That particular effect is a quirk of MD's extremely shit composite output and you won't replicate it that way. So there's zero reason to use composite if you can use component with your Wii.
As for the difference in overall picture brightness, maybe your TV has separate settings for those inputs and the contrast is lower on the composite in?
I hate the naming convention for picture settings in TVs BTW, where "contrast" is in fact the maximum brightness and "brightness" is the black level. It's funny that only in 2022 a major manufacturer decided to change those names to the proper ones after all these years (LG with the C2 OLED).

I just checked and the colors aren't set differently. I think it's my camera making the color blending look weird. I don't have a great way to take these pictures unfortunately, the brightness doesn't appear different except for the photos.

I'm not just talking about the colors by the way, I think that was an unintended side effect since any shitty output will do that with dithering (it happened with my Raspberry Pi and is the reason I stopped using it with my CRT). Moreso the more you degrade the image quality the waterfall will appear more solid instead of as verical lines, while still being transparent. If you zoom in on the component image you can see the individual lines of the waterfall, not as much on composite.

Anyways, here's Silent Hill, running on real hardware this time. First composite, you can see how the colors look smooth and natural.

Now S-video (highest an unmodded PSX can output).

It looks worse like this as you can clearly see the dithering effect causing a mismatched checkerboard color pattern. While other PSX games have this I don't think any have it to disagree where there is a constant dithering effect applied fullscreen for nearly the entire game. There might be a few others but so far this is the only game I've found where composite just looks better to me due to the dithering.

I get that knowing all of the CRTs will go eventually is sad but considering there's still working TV sets from the 1940s, we will all be dead and buried in the ground long before all of the CRTs die. At worst they'll just start being really expensive.

The technology of a CRT will never be replicated again, the manufacturing cost is just far too expensive compared to LCD screens and always will be. Maybe this isn't a popular opinion to say in /crt/ but I think current day LCDs (like since 2019 or so) are superior to CRTs in every single way other than being able to display 240p the way retro games intended by painting scanlines. Input lag has been cut way down and with OLED and HDR there's not really an argument for CRT picture quality being better anymore. I fully admit I mostly like them for the nostalgia factor.

I've heard that on OLED monitors CRT filters come really close to looking authentic, but I don't own one so I can't say for sure.

The hard part comes just from making the glass and it would only take maybe ten or twenty thousand units to make the production profitable again if you sold them at a thousand dollars each.

You underestimate how small the demand is. I think the only two groups of people who care about CRTs for personal use are retro gamers and competitive Melee players (who are also retro gamers technically). It's not realistic to think the demand will ever be high enough to justify manufacture.

Secondly you need to understand how economies of scale works, CRTs were only ever as cheap as they were in the 2000s because the manufacturing process was perfected. All of those factories have since either been dismantled or had their parts replaced to manufacture LCDs.

So yes its technically possible somebody will manufacture them on a small scale but there's a very good reason it hasn't happened yet. I don't think there will EVER be a point where the demand justifies the cost of manufacture. You'd likely have to charge tens of thousands of dollars per TV manufacturing on a small scale, and at that point I think we'd all just be using shaders, not to mention OLED technology is going to be much better at that point, which with shaders can replicate the look of a CRT a lot better.

Absolutely not. Obviously we all love CRTs, but let's be real - they're kinda shitty. Bulky, heavy, power-hungry boxes that are prone to geometry/purity issues. The general public will never choose that over sleek, modern flat panel displays, especially considering they already didn't in the 2000s. Ground or power.
One hypothesis I had was those ferrites in the ground paths. They seem to be an attempt at AGND-DGND separation, which is bit of a contreversial design pattern in electronics. Ferrites can cause the ground to float during high frequency loads, and in general resonate in weird ways. Further evidence for this was that the non-problematic A1 boards do not have these ferrites.
While this wasn't actually the cause, it's a good example of what kinds of things can cause problems far from the actual video signal.
Power related issues can be FAR simpler - poor regulation is a very common cause of overshoot.

(Sorry for bad quality of picture) but I got these 13" sets from my uncle for free. The one in use is brand name "SuperSonic" but guts appear to be made by Irico, some Chinese company. Manufacture date Jan 2009. Which seems pretty late. Seems like an oddity because I never really saw a curved screen tv with component inputs. Back of case has factory perforations for S Video and Digital for higher end models I guess? Also has a "DC in" input that looks like it would be for an alternate power source if you can't use the regular plug.

He was a truck driver and said he got these sets at truck stops with loyalty card points and probably used them only for watching western dvds. Of course the pic doesnt do it justice but the colours are very rich and seems to be a solid lil set.

The magnetbox set on the right sadly has no component inputs and a big scratch on the screen but I took it anyway.

>> No.9206295

>>9206287
I think pretty much all of the end-of-life CRT had component input. All CRTs have some degree of curvature but the "flat" ones just try to hide it behind the frame, and a lot of TVs with component input are flat since they were trying to compete with LCDs at that point. On a tiny TV like that there just isn't enough space to hide it which is why the curve is more visible.

solid find though, I love small sets like that and its much harder to find a small one for free compared to a big one.

This issue in its lesser form turns into ghosting only above 110khz or so, anything below it looks like overshoot. Your unregulated monitors aren't fast enough to reach the speeds where my F520 has its ghosting issue.
Also a big enough capacitor in the right place can eliminate power-related overshoot as well, the voltage drops from sudden loads wouldn't be rapid enough.

>> No.9208243

>>9208162
It seems to be a rebranded trinitron set to a fixed resolution of 1120x832 68hz. 21” must have been luxurious back in ‘91 but today I think that thing has highly restrictive use cases. Are you sure you want it? Also apparently they had the issue of never turning off while the computer was on, leading to very fast aging. I would not pay much for this unless you were making a period correct pc setup

BNC and composite in the 70s implies it’s prosumer grade, so probably pretty cool, but you’re right that 50 years has probably done a number on it. See if you can test it before buying because there’s no way to tell otherwise
