What's the best way to play Playstation games from an SD/HDD in the current era?
PS2 has had a resurgence with Free MCboot but PS1 seems to have missed out

Xstation.

Has the UI and everything improved? iirc it was still pretty new so text only

Anything is better than the PSIO. I got one because my model was incompatible with the XStation and I regret it. The developer is a piece of shit, and has been flaunting a firmware update for about two years now but won’t release it because they’re prioritizing their DRM.

that's fucked, I was put off by because it looks so cumbersome and a pain to set up.
Sounds like it's worth staying away from

Fuucking zoomer, can’t you just play modern games? Why you have to come into our hobby?

Duckstation

>> No.9011694

>>9011643
Not sure.
I know you're looking for an SSD/HDD solution, but if you have a PS2 look into mechapwn. You can boot PS1 games directly from burnt discs. Really convenient since PS2 lasers are far more common than PS1 stuff.

XStation no question
Get a compatible PS1 from some boomer selling their children stuff because they don't return her calls.
Solder the XStation. They have guides for any version of the circuit board.
If you are in PAL you just get a DFO from ebay to play NTSC properly

That's a really good idea, I'll check it out thanks anon
I have a bunch of japanese games as well so this will help a lot

>> No.9011723

Yeah. You just put the burnt game in and play. Been using it on a mid gen slim since it came out and it works great.

>>9011704
Yeah. It's a good starting point.

Do you use any particular disc burner, settings, etc? I've had trouble burning PS1 backups in the past (namely Brave Fencer Musashi and a couple others which would crash during their intros but played fine in Duckstation, PCSX, etc).
I used to burn a ton of Dreamcast games, but I ran into a few games whose burned iterations would have audio issues (missing bgm/SFX primarily). That made me wonder if any of my previous burns had fucked up audio without me even realizing.

I was playing ps1 games off usb on my ps2 before the tonyhax thing.

I've burnt at 1x and max speed on my BD burner and I haven't noticed a difference between either. Burnt games do stress the laser more, IIRC. A CD drive on its last legs may not be strong enough to work with anything but official discs. Not sure of the actual reason why, but in my experience that seems to be the case.
As for Dreamcast it's probably due to how the game was compressed to fit on a CD compared to a one gigabyte GDROM. Since the PSX uses standard sized CDROMs for games you shouldn't need to worry about it. The only reason you'd get borked audio is with a dying laser, a burn that didn't properly burn redbook audio, or burning a disc image that wasn't complete in the first place.

It's still a text list in a nice window and all that, the decoration is minimal but the device is superb and receives frequent updates. The latest update was a house keeping focused update which seems to be laying down the groundwork for lots of future expansion. Its integration with the memcardpro makes it the no-brainer best device around.

CFW PS3 is definitely good but not the best CRT solution as it only runs in 480i out of HD mode
