It's fun for a bit, it soon gets old if you actually use the save file for casual replays of specific levels. The map colors are one thing, but the grotesque Mario heads instead of shells are a bit too much.

If you save afterwards you can't really get the original sprites and palette back in any version of the game afaik. The conclusion from a lengthy /vr/ thread about the matter was that the best way to have a "keeper" file for casual play would be to just clear every goal except the very last Special World course (a "95" score file, without the little congratulatory star of a perfect 96 score file).

IIRC the change is triggered by a star at the end of the special world. It's not a level so it doesn't count towards the 96.

Nope, that star warp is just there for convenience, and using them doesn't really add up to the goal tally anyway. The changes are applied instantly when you clear the last SW course (Funky).

sometimes I'd go straight for the secret levels to have the most game to play with the palette shift and mask koopas (and pidgit bills). Other times I'd leave them to last. Indeed, though the game is piss easy no matter what. Just the other day I came across that one quote from one of the SMW devs about the color blocks being a way for the player to adjust the difficulty as desired, and I realized I had never attempted to play through the game without activating the blocks (not counting an 11-exit run). So I decided to do a Switch Palace-less, Star Road-less, shortcut-less run, only activating secret exits where necessary to progress (Forest of Illusion 3 and Chocolate Island 3 fall under this category). A couple of spots needed slightly more precise platforming, and of course there were less power-ups in places, but overall it didn't feel much harder. Granted, some of that is due to the cape, so perhaps I should've avoided feathers as well.

One of the things i love about SMW is how customizable playthrougs are.
Every time I replay it feels like a new way to go through it.
The optional switch palaces, all the different paths in pretty much all the worlds, it's a really well thought out map and no other platformer/action game with a map I've played has the same level of depth as SMW does.
Also another way to play the game that I find fun is playing 2 playe mode (preferably the All Stars version so it has the unique Luigi sprite) and take different routes with each brother, so for example Mario can do the regular no-secret path while Luigi goes to star world and special world. I played like this using a wireless SNES controller that let you switch between 1P and 2P with a switch on the same controller. Hate the lag of the wireless but the convenience makes it worth it.

I think this whole "smw was rushed" got de-mythified already, since the SNES got delayed. SMW started development shortly after SMB3 in 1988, if not even before SMB3 was ready.
There was time, and talking about the autumn map extra as a "rushed" thing is insane. If the game was rushed, it'd be maybe as long as the Yoshi's Island - Vanilla Dome portion, maybe Cookie Mountain too. Not even counting all the secrets.
>but Miyamoto said he would have liked to include even more stuff!
Miyamoto ALWAYS wants to include more things, he's a perfectionist. He has gone on record saying SMW is his favorite Super Mario game (though some other times he said SMB1)

Apart from what >>8985859 said, there's no way SMW was "rushed". The gigaleak proved that SMW went through numerous iterations until it reached its final form. It's even insane how many changes it went through. Seeing the old proto-SMW screenshots with raccoon Mario was already pretty wild, but seeing all the things from gigaleak was life-changing.

I doubt it. SMW follows the fundamentals of SMB1 and 3 and turns it to 11.
They perfected the physics (still to this day the Mario that controls the best, which is why SMW hacks are the preferred for the romhack community) and they deepened the secret paths from SMB1 and the worldmap of SMW to make a complex interconnected map via secret exits, they also managed the whole warp zone thing in a much more creative way with the Star World, making the "warp world" itself have real levels (although some of the weirdest, since they're very puzzle-heavy and focused on making the player find the secret exit).
I sure hope all of you played SMW blind and never used guides on this game.

What broke my mind about Soda Lake is that it was only in recent years that I realized you can sacrifice a Yoshi for an easy way to the secret exit on Butter Bridge, it just never crossed my mind to do it that way. Maybe getting to the exit with Yoshi might be a bit hard because of the chainsaw part at the end but with cape mario it's pretty easy.
But still, to me, the legit way to get there is the way I did as a kid, perfecting the arch of the cape dive. Killing Yoshi is scrub-tier.

>They were gonna port Mario 3 for the SNES
If there ever was a SMB3 port planned, it was probably for a very short amount of time, as I don't think I ever seen any pics of any proto SMB3 for SNES, other than the Raccoon Mario or Goombas sprites, maybe something else from SMB3, but early screenshots of SMW with raccoon mario already show SMW elements, like the pink triangles. It was definitely not a port of SMB3, and all the leaked stuff shows many different things that we've never seen before, not in SMB3 or anywhere else, and many of these things evolved into different things or designs (often more than 2 instances). If it was rushed they wouldn't have bothered to redesign so much stuff.
A rushed game would be a short game. Special World? Forget about that in a rushed game.
Also... a little over a year, I don't think that's bad, it's not like today's hollywoodesque games that take 15 years to finish. How many months did games like Castlevania or Mega Man games take? I doubt more than a year.
Rushed schedules would be something like 3 months.

Yes, I have autism. When it was my first time completing those special levels then getting my save file ruined it was kind of annoying, if anything you're the one begin autistic by refusing to accept this very valid criticism.

boomers are so out of touch with the modern world that they're not even aware that it's being used in a derogatory way, or just too demented to learn anything new.
the ones who use "zoomer" as an insult are gen x'ers at best, but definitely not actual boomers. actual boomers hardly use the internet after all.

>> No.8996260

Fucking hell, you're all autists moaning about the sprite/colour change! I thought it was cool as fuck as a kid. An interesting change, plus a "badge of honor" showing that you had mastered the game.

Even if you don't particularly like the new aesthetic, it doesn't change the gameplay at all.

The hitboxes remain the same but the sprite changes to be larger, so it's more difficult to make precise jumps.

You haven't post any proof that the hitbox didn't change. But even then, I don't think the difference in size is really noticeable.
I will try it out later and see if I can spot any actual difference but I know you're shitposting so whatever...

If they didn't change, then the hitboxes are inaccurate to the sprite as the sprite becomes larger. If they have changed, then the hitboxes have changed. Either way I'm right you fucking retards.

Not really, I checked later with regular koopas and the hitbox is about the same. The regular koopas' heads are smaller, but the hitbox is the same since they have the shell behind, the difference with the new koopas is that they have the mario mask instead of the shell, but as I said, hitbox is the same.
You are wrong, shitposter.

>> No.8999898

I cannot be wrong since the sprite changes, so a difference in recognizing the hitbox persists. And you like ever other troll in this thread have failed to give a proper answer to any of my other points.

This is a completely serious thread of me posting a valid criticism of a retro thread. This is not a shitpost, do you even know what shitposting means? And please, I'm not interested in your "banter", or whatever the fuck you're trying to do. You don't have any actual responses to any of my criticism, so you've lost this conversation, you've lost this argument.

I don't know who called you a zoomer, probably you earned that, but I think you failed to demonstrate how the different sprites make the jumps not precise. Either you suck at the game and blame the sprites, or... you just want to shitpost.

>you failed to demonstrate how the different sprites make the jumps not precise.
They changed the sprites to be larger.

>> No.9000543

>>9000525
I don't think they're larger per se, and as I said I had 0 problems making precise jumps (I did that consecutive short jump from koopa to koopa at the beginning of Yoshi's Island 2).
The sprites are the same size except the measure that would include both the Koopa's head and its shell is now occupied by the mario mask.
I'm gonna be leaving in a few minutes. Got a life, you know. But I sure hope by tomorrow afternoon you've posted some actual proof (preferably with actual game data, screenshots and stuff) that the new sprites somehow alter the gameplay and make the jumps "less precise".
If you keep replying "I can't be wrong! the sprites are different" then you're not winning the argument because of what I said in this post.
Post proof, simple as.

Not that same anon but its not that it was "rushed" but more like " holy fuck this dev team have no clue how to properly utilize the most out of this hardware". Now to be fair at around launch its asking too much of devs to fully utilize even a fraction of a systems power in such short notice, but I compare this game to many contemporary 2D platformers and even F Zero and Pilotwings and its just... Wow.

The game is ugly.
The game is amateurish.
The game is primitive.
The game is beyond easy.

Hindsight is 20/20... I cannot believe most of this thread admits to replaying such a terrible baby gsme more than once. SMW was the beginning of the fabled " Mario Mandate"... Not immediately, but it planted the seeds that would later come to fruition with NSMB DS and then NSMBWii. This was where 2D Mario met its unequivocal flanderized genetic deadend, where Miyamoto, Tezuka and co. gave up and said, save for Yoshis Island : "We did all that we could, and also we lack the passion to innovate further so fuck you.". Away we go with the bigger and better budgets of 3D Mario. Imagine for a sec if 2D Mario had the innovation and production value of a 3D Mario. How insane and gratifying that would be. But no.

Somewhere around 1991 they just decided right then and there that 'that' was good enough. And the more time passes the more Im inclined to believe that senility also has a role to play in this. Pic related. Miyamoto is embarassed of SMB3? BUT NOT fucking SMW? Puh-lease.
