Not a debate. 2's neat but the core isn't as solid. The ragdolls are stupid and bullet time is casualized. I was pumped when it came out and pirated this shit out of it, though. Played through it a few times. Still. 1's better.

There's something about the original Max Payne that has a downplayed science fiction tone with the valkyr drug. Like the drug itself was part of some sort of super soldier steroid enhancement program, that became a popular narcotic. The developers made up their own fantasy drug trips when Max is on V. Also the first game is a straight third person shooter, with a few moments of platforming. With a revenge plotline.

Max Payne 2 drops the valkyr drug, but still references it as a thing that happened in the past. Max gets soft rebooted into being a detective. The game adds in-game cinematic cutscene models to the engine. You do see unique models that have specific poses and actions. in the original Max Payne, in-game cutscenes would just have the models in their default idle posses, or doing an in-game action. Max Payne 2 also adds some 'helpful NPC's' with guns to the mix. The original game has NPC's in spots. The game is a little shorter and they did make it a little easier on purpose. I do like the weirdness with the AU stage. The game does add Dead Man Walking as a bonus game. basically an arcade survival mode.

The original PC version of Max Payne 2 adds the Havok physics engine to the MaxFX game engine. MaxFX 2 upgrades the renderer from DX8.1 to DX9, and adds Havok physics engine license. The home console ports of Max Payne 2 are made on the Criterion Software's RenderWare engine instead. Because Rockstar used the RenderWare license every chance they could. I thought Timothy Gibbs was just a soap opera actor? Remedy did want to replace the game developer likenesses with actual actors. On top of that, during the development of Max Payne 2, 3DRealms and Remedy decided to sell their shares of the franchise to Rockstar Games. 3DR produced and partially funded Max Payne 1, so they were partial owners.

Interesting to see some Max Payne 2 dissent in here, for a real long time people rallied behind it because it had a horrible console port and kind of slipped through the cracks in its day. They're both classic games that are perfectly complimentary to each other. I'll say that Max Payne 2 is quite a bit easier, but the feeling of going into slow-mo and shooting a bunch of guys into the air is awesome. Reminds me of Last Man Standing.

3 is goated too. Amazing series of games.

I had completely forgotten about this in time but I checked back in on the PS2 version of Max Payne recently for the first time in forever, and there's are a really annoying auto-adjust that's always present in the console version of Max Payne. The game is constantly trying to center the aiming reticle in the middle of the screen, but what seemed like a quality-of-life implementation 20 years ago (we need to help people wrangle the analog sticks) is super annoying today.

I think Max Payne 2 feels great to play but it's got some less-than-ideal levels. Wow this is weird. I would have assumed the sequel would have been more well liked but looking here I guess there's a reason why people talk about 1 more than 2.
I adored Max Payne 2, it felt like an improvement in a lot of ways visually and gameplay wise. Only real issue I have is that bullet time feels cheap to use since you move in real time while everyone else slows down. I loved that in the original bullet time was used as a way to have a better handling of the situation while still being vulnerable, Max Payne 2 has a lot of gameplay quirks from 1 regarding combat, but the bullet time is completely broken.
Max Payne 1 is a fun ride but there's some frustration in the level design that feel annoying even if loading up a save is near instant. The presentation is also something I love but not for being a technical marvel or anything, it's a cheesy looking game and I adore it for that reason, but damn 2 made me double take a couple times with how much they improved the engine overall. The ending in 2 is also perfect, absolutely loved 2 for that reason alone, even though the original's ending is iconic and insane.
I can see why people would love 1 more but fuck dude 2 wins me over a tad more.

I would take it with a grain of salt as classic 4chan contrarianism. Opinions on the series have shifted over time (MP3 was thought to be a dud at release but since then it's become extremely divisive) but Max Payne 2 used to be the one--but probably because it was underappreciated at the time.

I wonder what we can expect from the remakes of 1 and 2 that Remedy just announced.

Max Payne 3 uses Rockstars RAGE engine (GTA 4, 5, Red Dead 2). Remedy will not be using it for the Max Payne remakes. They will be using their own engine called Northlight, which was featured in Quantum Break and Control. I'm fine with that. I'm sure Remedy will make a good looking remake. It was smarter not to try to copy that style if you're not Sam Lake though. 2 is a better shooter even with the bullet time working like it does imo, it's still challenging if you play on the hardest difficulty at least I remember it being, it's been many years and when I tried replaying them I ended up not finishing 2 even though I was enjoying it.

>I like how 1 is weirder from the start, 2 is more like a regular crime movie until the final quarter or so and it never gets as trippy as 1,

The original Max Payne had a much longer development time than Max Payne 2. Remedy developed their own game engine, conceptual development started as early as 1996, and went gold in 2001. Some early versions of the game showed 'mutants' who were genetically enhanced by Valkyr, which looks like would have shown up late in the game. The Matrix was an obvious turning point for the development of the first game. The Matrix came out in 1999. Bullet Time seemed to be fully implemented after the release of this movie. Max Payne 2's development was between 2001 and 2003, and was much shorter. But at this point, Remedy had a formula and an upgraded game engine to work with. They scaled things down a bit, probably realising that Rockstar was going to carry on the series.
