Was my first Final Fantasy. I was super into the N64 and missed out on the entire PSX library. So when the PS2 came out, this was a HUGE deal. At the time I had never seen graphics so good. I was blown away. Rented this game as soon as it came out and loved it.
This and 7 are my favorites.

So bad it makes me angry whenever I try to play it, I've still only ever made it about 8 hours in before giving up. Even 8 and 12 are much, much better imo.

As much shit as Tidus gets, it could be worse. He could be Hope Estheim.

Mechanically a peak series game, especially with the international version's sphere grid.

Dramatically, it's an experiment. Square weren't used to this and they had dialogue meander and falter a lot to be more real. What it gained was some additional emotion, but the loss of conciseness was significant, which is why they don't do it anymore. It's like watching an unedited film in this way; sure a professional editor could have made the film a better "product" but there's a pureness to watching everything they're attempting, sloppy and otherwise, with no regard for time taken.

One does get in the way of the other I'll admit. You can't just replay for the mechanics, you have to want to sit through these kids sorting through their words and deciding how they feel. Worth it the first time absolutely though.

Never played a single FF game, is it worth it?

I feel like it's cringe that I can't find the ideal version to play, one fully in Japanese (voices and text) and with the original PS2 models, textures and lighting. I'd say especially the lighting is notably worse in any non-PS2 version.

There's either the PS2 International, which has Japanese text + English voices, or the fully Japanese PS3, PS4 etc. re-releases which don't have the original models, textures and lighting.

Hilariously, the PS2 International also has English texts, which makes it the idea undub target. And an undub exists. They, there's an undub that adds Japanese voices to a Japanese release that didn't have them. It's intended for people to play English text + Japanese voice, but on paper it's also ideal for me. I can just play the PS2 International undub and choose the Japanese text. But guess what, the Japanese text in International seems to be based on the English voice acting, which means when you undub back the Japanese one, the Japanese text and voices don't match.

That's fucking bizarre to play. Two Japanese scripts, one in text form, one in voice form overlapping each other.

Maybe I should give up and play the original, non-updated Japanese release that's fully in Japanese.

Anyway, rant over. Fuck Square for this bizzare "International" line of PS2 games.

I feel like it was just okay. The story is really basic without any twists and turns but I really liked the artwork and world creation, every area feels really fleshed out and very unique, especially the early ones. Besaid, Kilika and Luca are all really beautiful. Yuna, Wakka, Auron and Jecht are all pretty good characters, the rest are garbage, oh and Seymour is lel I'm evil tier. Definitely worth a playthrough.

It’s the best one to start with. Not saying it’s the best necessarily, just that it’s a great into to the series.

FFX is the point I stopped caring about FF.
I played FF1 to 9, all of them multiple times (more than I can count), I even played Crystal Chronicles; but I could never bring myself to care for X and beyond, and everything I see or hear about them doesn't make me want to try

Best characters in a Final Fantasy game. Often confused with some of the worst voice acting in a game.

Plot is also the best from start to finish. May need some filling in by talking to old man Maechen in each location, who is a snooze to listen to his voice.

Do not listen to this poster, pick something that isn't just a movie-game like 6. Play something with meaningful character building choices like 5, Tactics, or FFX.

I've never played it. The characters are uninteresting and I could never get into it for that reason. It's also the only FF you can still reliably find at used game stores.

Did you even play the game? That shit is pointless. Even FF12's stupid license shit is more "meaningful" than FFX's Sphere grid when it comes to customization/character building.

Got so bored/mad that I stopped playing for a month before going back and finishing it. Did not like the zone progression and how every new zone you fight the same reskin monsters from the last zone with slightly more health and different elements for Lulu to kill. X definitely has soul, but it marks the beginning of the end for the series.

There's at least two (unvoiced) bits of dialog that use his name.
