Can just one person tell me the advantage (even just one advantage) of MiSTer over both original hardware and emulation? Can one person also give me one SPECIFIC example where the most up-to-date emulator builds running on high-end hardware are less accurate than MiSTer?

I ask this in every thread but never get a straight answer.

For example. an interesting visual oddity in the PC Engine video processing:
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/TurboGrafx16_MiSTer/issues/165
>In terms of how games operate (including simulating real hardware for games under development), I believe that this is now "close enough" that the core displays games as intended, and is a very good representation of real hardware (certainly better than any current software emulator).

I wanted to play old games on my living room TV with ROM support. Original hardware would be expensive. Building a new computer would have all the disadvantages of a full desktop OS on my living room TV, cumbersome and bulky. Raspberry Pi was slow to boot up, crashed a few times on me, finicky with the RetroPie OS config, and had a bit of input lag my PC didn’t have.

MiSTer setup was a complete breeze, instant-on, and absolutely no headache except it took some trial and error to get a wifi dongle that worked properly with it.

Better, cleaner 15kHz RGB video output, especially when using direct video and a working HDMI-to-VGA dongle. Old systems were built to a price. And PC video card DACs have been compromised for years. The MiSTer is amazingly crisp.

Go shit in your hand. I've had arcade cabs for years, as do several friends. I played consoles back in the day and i play them now. SNES RGB is muddy. PC Engine RGB isn't perfect. And the Megadrive is worse. Why the fuck do you think so many video mods and bypasses exist? The output of AMD graphics cards from the X200 series through to the R7/R9 3xx series is... good. But the MiSTer gives better video than *all* of them. Doesn't matter if you're talking an arcade monitor, consumer tubes, PVMs, BMVs, whatever. It's better video-wise, and there's no getting around it.

Ok, so you don't believe the MiSTer hype. That's not a problem - I didn't until i tried one. But don't open your trap when you don't know anything.

You would definitely be able to tell if it was there. It's not a flickering transparency effect either, so being at 30fps has no bearing on being able to tell it's there. Regardless, they couldn't even figure out what exactly was causing it, and had to implement a hack approximation that "looks good enough"

Something similar could easily be implemented in an emulator, but implementing specific hacks to try to best mimic what looks like original hardware is not accurate either lol

It should be clarified that the MiSTer is NOT a product, it's as free as the emulators you currently use on your PC right now. You can download every single project file from the MiSTer Github right now for FREE. The only difference is that you have to buy a budget FPGA board intended for educational purposes but additional community sourced accessories are also available to make further use of this project. I am not going to deny that it all adds up to a hefty amount, but that is to be expected with any enthusiast/hobbyist oriented project. MiSTer is just another option for playing /vr/ under a different environment compared to traditional software emulation. I don't understand why it bothers people that we are exploring FPGA as an alternative to original hardware.

One thing we'll never get in these MiSTer FPGA threads are real technical justifications for owning a MiSTer over actual hardware. I mean, how important is having no input delay when most emufags have conditioned themselves to basically capture card tier lag but manage to pull off speedrun records? I'm beyond impressed by the speed of the progress compared to software emulators which have had double the amount of years to develop, but why should I spend that amount of money when a Pi3B+ is capable of at least running PC Engine and Soldier Blade? I've been following the MiSTer trying to convince myself I should pick one up, but I notice MiSTer fags are quicker to ask for features than to wait or help with bug fixes and further accuracy. Also, compared to an Rpi3B+ with native composite put, you have to invest more money on transcoders which is basically the reverse of what people do with real consoles to get RGB. And if you want the composite look, you have to mess with dozens of filters and shadow masks which by comparison to modern emulators, they hardly look all that great. It's really hard to find a worthwhile middleground unless you are desperate for a dedicated solution that caters to the negligible aspects of retro gaming.

Pic is from porkchop's twitter.

>when most emufags have conditioned themselves to basically capture card tier lag but manage to pull off speedrun records?
what is this retarded cope lmao

Emulation is as low as original hardware and even lower if you choose to do so (due to VRR, lower controller latency, and run-ahead). Emulation is the absolute lowest latency method possible, no exceptions.

>> No.8744706

No one cares if you use run-ahead except maybe some autistic speedrunning authority but who gives a shit about that.

Even without run-ahead emulation is still lower lag though, due to high refresh-rate VRR and lower lag controllers. That's the advantage of emulation, you can have it be 100% accurate or even better if you choose. Run-ahead is pretty negligible though and you're rarely if ever using more than 1 or 2 frames of run-ahead.
