Was this the first official release of anything Berserk related in the west? The 1997 anime had fansubs floating around on VHS back in the day, but it wasn't officially released on DVD/VHS until 2002, the same year as the manga got it's first English release. Sword of the Berserk on the other hand came out two years earlier in North America in 2000.

Apologies if this is more of an /a/ topic, but does anyone else find this strange? Did people back in the day just think "oh, this is some Japanese thing" and have no fucking clue what was going on in the story? Very strange of them to localize it if so. Any other anime/manga properties that this happened to back in the day with vidya?

Literally the exact same thing happened with a DragonBall game from Japan in 1988, predating the anime/manga localization by at-least 7 years depending on whether the short-lived 1995 Funimation or Harmony Gold dubs count.

The game did a good enough job setting up the world and characters for the game's story. And yes at the time people would just pick things up all the time without knowing. I watched the Berserk anime knowing nothing about it and only realized the game was related years later when I went back to replay Dreamcast games I had.

Yes. My friend Daniel owned this game and we knew jackshit about what Berserk was. DC had a lot of unabashed JP shit on it like Maken X so this game was pretty normal

I didn't know it was related to an anime until years later through online exposure and I was able to put two and two together. It's kind of neat how Guts is voiced by Raziel in this game, while Puck is voiced by a nasally Liquid Snake, the side character who gets killed later is Colonel Campbell, and the villain Ballsack is Sergei Gurlukovich while Nosferatu Zodd is Vulkan Raven. I think the anime voices suit the characters better though.

This was one of my favorite DC games and I didn't know what it was. Jap games were always really weird and nonsensical anyway, plus it's just a beat em up and those plots are always stupid. Like the other anon said DC had a bunch of weird nip shit like Zombie Revenge, or Seaman, so it fit right in.

Oh and I'm pretty sure the circus girl is Emma Emmerich lol

Another interesting thing to consider is that this game was released in 1999, but takes place at a point in the timeline that wouldn't be covered in the manga until 2001 so it has plot spoilers right from the getgo (like the fact Casca survives the Tower of Conviction and hasn't yet regained her memories, and Griffith's resurrection).

I'm pretty sure Black Belt for Master System predates the localization of both the Fist of the North Star manga and anime.

I bought this when it came out, never having heard of Berserk. I thought it was an original property, until they name-drop the comics in the credits. I was just looking for a hack & slash game at the time.

I got it when it came out. Looked cool. When Berserk came out on DVD I randomly picked one(vol.2) out in a movie bin at EBX. By that time I sold the game. And did not realize till years later it was the same universe. And Miura made the game cannon.

Is this the only Berserk content with filler OCs?

We got a Hajime no Ippo game in the west a year or two before the anime had a western release.

We also got Kinnikuman on the NES, but we did technically get Kinnikuman toys in America in the 80s, even if the actual show they were based on never came over.

I know it was my first exposure to it. I had no idea it was even based on anything.
I used to just get new Dreamscast games on a whim, sight unseen. Ended up loving it. I only found out a while after that about the manga.

I'm pretty sure the Jojo fighting game by Capcom was released in English before the manga or the OVA. Even if those had come out only turbo weebs knew about them at the time, most people who played this game just thought it was a Capcom thing and the story was pretty incomprehensible.
