I feel like playing an absolute GOAT JRPG style game, any era (within the constraints of the board, obviously) and any style/subgenre
I don't care what system I have to emulate or something, I just very rarely have ever played turn/tile based RPGs and I feel like having a dabble.
So if you could recommend a single title as the pinnacle JRPG experience, what would it be?
Excluding Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 7, of course, those are the only two I've played.
I have some experience with Skies of Arcadia, but I kinda bounced off it, although I can give it an honest attempt if you say its good

Dragon Quest 2 on Famicom. In my opinion it's a must play for anyone interested in jRPGs due to how it set the standard for the entire genre.

Star Ocean The Second Story. You don't have to play the first one to play it, but there are a few connections. GOAT as far as I'm concerned, I will shill this game long after Squeenix has released its final shitty entry in the modern form of the series.

paper mario 2: thousand year door
only really a minor connection with the first game in the form of an easter egg in postgame, which isn't bad itself but the combat/world is less interesting imo

There has only been a single video game that has given me a sense of adventure. While many other games you're on an adventure, in Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song I felt like I was the one crafting it rather than being lead on it. Trying to piece together the world, obtaining quests, figuring the quests out, and exploring the world is great. The battle mechanics are excellent as well.

If you wanted PS1/N64/Saturn or earlier then I couldn't recommend Romancing SaGa 2 enough. You're an emperor and you bring territories under your control by solving their conflicts and face off against the seven heroes.

Be warned, they don't hold your hand and it's normal to feel lost so it won't appeal to everyone. If you tough it out you might find something you really enjoy.

Not really something I'd recommend to a first timer like OP, but if he can play that without too much reliance on guides, he can probably play any console jRPG

The single factor that will determine how much you enjoy the game is what kind of stories you enjoy. I'd say Suikoden II has an incredible story but only if you learn about the characters as you play. Unironically the easiest RPG to just get into and play is Pokemon.

DQVI is a much more better and substantial game than V for people who actually value DQ for its exploration, adventure and balanaced gameplay. V may have the better story for those who play JRPGs for setpiece after setpiece experiences, but it's beat in pretty much every other aspect by most other games in the series, especially III, IV and VI

The Phantasy Star games as a whole are all pretty much fantastic (3 is a weird mess but still a solid RPG). 4 is pants shittingly good, dare I say the best RPG ever made

Depends on what you want from the game. As someone who also started with Chrono Trigger, it took me awhile to get into other RPGs, especially older ones (I actually hated all the SNES FF's because they didn't feel as good. I like them now, but still)

I think the Phantasy Stars are cool as fuck but you might want a guide for some of them (or play the AGES version of the original).

Dragon Quest as a series is like the Mario of JRPGs. It's not totally mind blowing, but it's a good example of what the genre is, and you can expect a generally good level of quality. Each entry has some hook that makes it worth checking out, and I recommend checking the general to see what interests you.

The Etrian games are great dungeon crawlers, but if you're not into dungeon crawlers you'll bounce off quickly.

Shin Megami Tensei is a series worth checking out if you want to see Pokemon before Pokemon and enjoy relatively dark subject matter. The spinoffs are really fun, too (Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, Soul Hackers, the Persona 2 duology).

Tactics Ogre is way different from what I suggested but it's got a cool story and the PSP remake is excellent. I find it easier to get into than Final Fantasy Tactics if only cause it's not as slow or grindy.

Also, I dunno, look at some action RPGs. Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. Ys. Faxanadu. Someone is gonna poopoo that last one but it's basically "what if Zelda II had HR Guiger monsters" with some gritty backgrounds.
