What are some noteworthy Pokemon clones that you recommend? I've been playing this lately.

DQ5 and SMT can be seen as having come up with the same idea at the same time, and Pokemon most definitely rolled up later and copied them.

Megami Tensei did it in 87. There is a high possibility that it influenced DQV

I find that pretty unlikely. DQV's devs had four previous full games in their own series to iterate on, and a huge part of DQ's appeal is Toriyama's monster art, to the point that DQ doesn't even bother depicting the player characters in battles just so there's more space for the monsters. Plus its not like there isn't a long lineage of traditional and CRPGs that have playable monster races and such. A competing series that drew a ton of the same inspiration as DQ did would not have been a prime candidate for copying.
The same applies to Pokemon, it didn't copy the idea of monster raising from any one source. The idea wasn't particularly novel, Pokemon just put a stronger emphasis on it and gave the concept a huge burst of popularity, just as DQ did to the idea of console CRPGs as a whole.

This and games like Dragonseeds are those games about getting and training up monsters that are so disconnected from chasing the Pokemon cash, that I feel they would've existed without it despite coming out at the perfect time.

Yeah, you are right about DQ and MT but I can almost guarantee that DQV was an influence for Pokemon judging by how popular the series is with JRPG devs to this day

DQV was surely an influence on Pokemon, but DQV was an influence on literally every single JRPG. Its not as if Pokemon owes its entire existence to one gimmick from an earlier game.

The portable aspect also made it very distinct. The ability to trade your monsters with another player is something that was not in Dragon Quest V nor in the Megami Tensei, as those were strictly home console games. The fact that some of the monsters were locked to certain versions of the game gave you an even bigger incentive to trade with players.

And you are unaware how big Digital Devil Story was in Japan. Best selling novel, anime adaption, and both Famicom games were big sellers. There was even a standalone pc-88 game. To just dismiss it's influence because you know jackshit about the series is pretty gay of you

I've been playing Medarot. It's pretty cool. The battles are fun and it's got a 90's Japan feel to the world, similar to early Pokemon.

I'm not dismissing the MegaTen series' influence, I'm pointing out that Pokemon was not a particularly novel concept in the first place outside of the mobile platform and trading concepts, and pointing out that if Pokemon had decided to wholesale lift concepts from earlier influential JRPG works like DQV or MegaTen, that would have been extremely obvious and would not have gone over well at all with audiences. Pokemon doesn't really share anything in common with SMT's early entries beyond generalized gameplay concepts, which you can say were inspired by SMT or any other game but there's no real quantifiable way to prove that. Its conjecture, and Pokemon owes a lot more to franchises like DQ and SMT for fomalizing the JRPG genre than it does for any specific gameplay asset or idea.

Western audiences would be none the wiser, since neither game had been localized.

DQV came out after Gamefreak pitched their idea to Nintendo, but both Tajiri and Sugimori got the idea from playing DQIII and DQ and Toriyama was a big influence, I cannot doubt it had an influence on the development in some way.
Though it should be note that the first SaGa/Final Fantasy Legends was also a big influence

They had a pretty small team, working on pretty limited hardware, on a limited budget that ate up into their own pockets sometimes, and were literally just an actual unironic indie dev team just a few years beforehand, some of them had know computer knowledge and GF got their start on games by reverse engineering a Famicom to make their own game and hoping Namco would publish it.
Really, the entire story of GF in the 80's and 90's is really interesting.

While I think Dragon Monster had the idea of monster requiting before Pokemon, I do think it's obvious that DQM wouldn't exist without Pokemon.
Both DQ and SMT did the hold monster recruiment thing before Pokemon and they both saw it and felt "holy shit, we did that before them, let's double down on it"
