30min in and I'm bored out of my mind.
Does it get better?
Neither the story nor the gameplay seem fun or to get any deeper.

>> No.8696118

It was great as a kid with nothing like it and I still enjoy it today but with ten times the competition I have to ask why you're playing it to begin with. Internet hype? Mostly people rating it highly from 25 years. It's got some nice music and colorful graphics and the turn based gameplay laid the foundation for better thints but it's also baby's first RPG.

It does get better but if you were not instantly invested in it I honestly doubt you'll ever enjoy it, best to just play something else.

It's a game of its time. Incredible graphics and concept back in the day, now that are better options out there.

I mean its a childrens video game featuring mario in an rpg. It's probably better if you have nostalgia for it. its for children anon. I dunno what to tell you. Its got charm?

Mario RPG is pretty clearly a pacifist allegory considering that its story is literally about stopping a bunch of weapons from destroying the world's hopes and dreams.

While easy, the game flows amazingly like Chrono Trigger

Personally I love it, but it's not a deep game in terms of battles/difficulty/story. There's tons of secrets and stuff, but if you're looking for a challenging in-depth RPG it's not going to satisfy you. If you don't find it charming early on, I kinda doubt it will grow on you.

But IMO, the most fun part of the battle system is mastering the perfect blocks for each attacks.

This game is for Mario autists on deviantart that makes ocs out of enemies. It literally has nothing to offer for the veteran gamer if you dont fit this criteria. Miyamoto made it to be a beginner's JRPG with simplistic QTEs.

I rented this game when it came out and HATED it. After this and Mario is Missing, my mom said no more Mario games. Luckily she changed her mind when Mario 64 came out.

I bought it a couple years ago to give it a second chance and yeah, it fucking sucks. And the worst part is it's too hard. This is not a game that's good enough for me to tolerate dying. Nope, no thanks.

I'm trying to sell it but the best offer I got was $40. I paid more than that unfortunately.

b8 works best when it's more subtle, you need to slow down.

I would agree but also add that I think the game is a bit slow until after the Second Star piece, would say play past that and if after getting a full party (5) you still don't enjoy the game it's a lost cause. 30 minutes in you don't even have anything to do but control one character unless you were rushing like crazy or also speeding up on emulator.

30 minutes in? Can't believe you're not fully invested in the single character and place you've been to.

>> No.8697163

Replayed it last year. I won't say the gameplay is amazing or anything, but it still holds up pretty well after all these years. The dialogue and characters are pretty funny which is helped by the story never taking itself seriously.

Also that Yoko Shimomura soundtrack.

I tried replaying it again recently and realized how slow the start is.

Bowser's Castle for an opening was great, providing that sense of urgency for the story and had nice action sequences. After that, you're stuck with a sort of tutorial in navigating the world map, making it through the first real area (Filled with encounters that mostly waste your time and provide no real challenge), Mushroom Kingdom being mostly a lore dump, and then a slightly longer tutorial dungeon where you at least have an extra party member to go through with to provide a little more depth.

After all of that, the game finally decides to up the difficulty just a bit and pits you against Mack followed by Belome which require you to do slightly more than use timed hits. From there, almost two or three hours in, the game finally starts to improve until it comes into its own, with only a slight dip in how slow the cutscenes in Frog Marsh and Geno's introduction are. Really, the entire problem with the game is that it was made in an era that was still trying to teach players what an RPG was and taking its time with the tutorials so any modern. veteran player would likely get bored long before they reached anything enjoyable.

For anyone who does replay this game, I'd really recommend making a backup save post-Croc or Mack so you can avoid the majority of the dregs.

The second star piece is way too far in for someone who doesn't like it initially to sit through. I really think the game comes into it's own once you get to the first dungeon (and the whole wine river sequence) if not before that but 30 minutes is too short, yeah.

>> No.8698361

Issue is people give up on RPGs far too quick when this is a genre known for slow starts or at minimum taking a while in general. Expectations should be set but just the same scenarios need to be designed to not drag either.

This is bait. A common criticism of Super Mario RPG is just how easy it is to become overpowered, how when you get Peach you will pretty much never die again, etc.

I like Guest-Advanced more, but much like Royale, you gotta fiddle with it. Use the latest version posted in the libretro forums, and try out the lower TVL masks. I like Mask 9, but if it's too dark for you, try Mask 11, which is brighter but lower TVL. I feel those work best with games with pre-rendered graphics like this and DKC.

The only rpg Mario I can stomach is m&l series. I recently gave paper Mario 64 a shot and while I finished it I wouldn’t play it again. By the time I got to the toy box it just bored me to a point i was sick. I guess Yoshis Italians redeemed it a little but then that flower garden segment came up and I felt like I was playing a 2 year old game. I now motives when people praise this entry they always say they played it as a kid. Every damn time. Even the “unique” Ememies that wear hats are boring

>> No.8705394

>>8702407
I did think the default one was too dark (Halation's brightness is the main appeal for me), but I've never tinkered with the settings on these things before and honestly don't even know what "mask" is referring to. I'm definitely up for experimenting when I get home, though. Mask 11 sounds like it'll be my ticket. Much appreciated.

>>8705394
"Mask" refers to the pattern used by the shader to attempt to replicate a real CRT's phosphor layout. Pic related shows two examples from real CRTs. Most consumer TV sets used the one on the left, while Sony TVs used the one on the right. The "aperture grille" mask is the easiest to emulate, so it's what most CRT shaders have focused on until recently.

Guest's shaders have a lot of different mask patterns to try out, and each results in varying degrees of brightness and sharpness. The default mask pattern (Mask 0) essentially emulates a PVM, which is fine, but I find it a bit too sharp, so I prefer Mask 9, which is more akin to a consumer Sony set, although it's darker.

Got the latest version of Advanced and dropped it in. RA fails to apply it for some reason (and it did with the previous version before I replaced it, so that wasn't the issue). I know I didn't change any settings since the last time I tested Advanced. Guess I've got to use Halation whether I want to or not now.
