Nothing's changed. It's still a Serious Sam which has incredibly solid gameplay foundation but almost everything else is bad/terrible. Steam's positive reviews percentage keeps decreasing slowly, rightfully so. Touch it only if you really love SS-style gameplay and have a good enough rig (3gb video ram at very least).

The optimization is way better now than it was on launch, but still requires tweaking the settings to get it to run good (so graphics will vary depending on how powerful your system is). Also the legion system is in the last level and fully functional, not like it is in the prologue (though if you know what you're doing you can still beat it pretty fast). The only powerful weapons I felt were given too late were the lasergun and cannon, but everything else you had ample opportunity to use.
As for all the other points for me those literally do not bother me at all. I liked the skill tree, I didn't mind the big levels, and I didn't think any of the enemy encounters were boring. But that's just my opinion. I'm a simpleton and more serious sam is good serious sam.
Also serious sam 4 is instantly better than 3 because the game actually starts in the first level when you spawn, not 3 levels later.

You would not believe how much of a pain in the ass this was to get both working and performant. On the upside, I managed to near-perfectly solve the only real solvable tracer issue that Babel has (tracers appearing to pass through the back of some objects). On the further downside though, implementing this into the actual mod will be yet another exercise in wanting to strangle a German chicken.
Thanks for reading my shitty blogpost. Update still coming, just slowly because I actually have a real job again lol.

It's kinda crazy how much of a versatile weapon the shotgun is, it's almost bad game design

That depends on context right? The SSG is objectively more ammo efficient when all the pellets hit their target, like in close range mancubus combat. Overall, Doom 2 has an incredibly well-balanced weapon roster, pistol aside.

Always kind of found it weird that your main weapons in a nominally-military themed shooter were a SxS shotgun and a rocket launcher.

I mean I like the doom shotguns, but I prefer a good machine gun weapon in games, so I find myself gravitating towards weapon mods with good machine guns.

This is in a playable, release candidate state. Expect a steady escalation of fights. If you're not prepared to tear through 888 enemies with only a rocket launcher as your weapon, try playing it on skill 2 or even 1.

PRBoom+ and DSDA compatible. The final arena breaks in GZDoom, so don't use that.

At the very least there’s lots of variety and effort put into HL’s linearity, and it still had a decently healthy roster of enemies to introduce throughout the campaign.
Any sort of “downhill” with FPS started with Xbox and its accessible shooters and LAN parties. 2004 confirmed the death spiral. One of the “best” shooters to come after all that (FEAR) is plagued by all the same tropes.

Quake and Doom have much better core gameplay than either Half-Life. Large levels, good weapons, good enemy variety. Both Half-Life games start with overly long cutscenes-that-are-not-cutscenes, where you can walk around but still have to wait until the scene is over, with no option to skip it. Half-Life 2 has a TON of these. You go meet your allies, they talk about shit, meanwhile you crowbar Alyx's boobs and throw computer hardware at Dr. Kleiner's face who don't even react to your shenanigans. There's no way to skip these scenes on a second playthrough, other than straight-up quitting back to the main menu and restarting from the next chapter... or using a level skip cheat. Apparently having a silent protagonist increases the immersion because YOU are Doctor Freeman and the devs never put any words in your mouth... but when your game has you interact with NPCs this much, and instead of making those into cutscenes you allow the player to dick around like a retard, it just becomes absurd. "Oh hey Dr Freeman it's so nice to finally meet you, I respect you so much, you're a great scientist!" Proceeds to dick around like a turboautist on a mixture of meth, speed and cocaine, crouching down and savaging her cunt with a crowbar, then grabbing all the science equipment in the room and tossing it around like a monkey throwing poop.

The weapons in HL2 feel merely okay, and they all have pitifully low maximum ammo counts. In some scenes, you absolutely need to use one specific weapon (usually it's the rocket launcher) and the game gives you infinite ammo in a respawning ammo box. While the physics engine is great and it's fun to explode red barrels to send combine soldiers flying, the average moment-to-moment gunplay is merely mediocre compared to Doom and Quake. The game is too preoccupied with showing off its engine capabilities with some gimmick scenes, rather than focusing on delivering a solid shooting experience. There are a lot of vehicle sections, there's that antlion section where you toss a pheromone ball to command your antlion army, it all feels very gimmicky and designed to show off what the engine can do. "Hey guys, we have physics! We have a decent AI and the ability to command a squad! We have vehicles! Isn't that cool??" Also, both Half-Life games are incredibly linear. Far, far more linear than your average shooter of the time. Doom, Quake, the Build Engine games, Unreal... sure, they all had some linear levels, but your average level there involved exploring a small hub, hunting down keycards, finding secret areas, etc etc. The levels often had expansive spaces that could be tackled in several ways. You can go to the left wing of the building first or the right wing of the building, you can cross that bridge by walking over it or jump down into the water and find another way up to the other side, etc. In the Half-Life games, there is usually only ONE way forward. Not two ways, not three ways, just one. They are among the most linear shooters of their time, and a huge step back in level design compared to what came before, especially the Build Engine games and Unreal 1.

Games like Doom, Quake and Duke never truly died. We didn't see new retro-styled FPS games for a long time because of new technology and people wanting to take advantage of it. If it wasn't going to be Half-Life taking the genre in a new direction then it was going to be something else.

Whatever story there is, won't get in your way. You can completely ignore the story and just go shooting. It won't stop you to show cutscenes or conversations. Stuff just happens around you. The action is fast. At the time the linear progression through carefully crafted setpieces was original and refreshing.

It's not their fault that their success led to FPS developers adopting some characteristics of their game while making their new games slow, cover based, with regenerating health and cutscenes, all because of console casuals.

On the other hand, look how Quake is basically the same game as Doom but with polygons. How many times were devs supposed to rehash the same game? Half life managed to innovate without catering to casual mouseless players, keeping the fast FPS action intact. Look how Quake 2 and Unreal are aimless tech showpieces that while being good games, represent a clear step down in quality for the old formula.

I'm no longer sure how I feel about this. Quake 2's base encounters might leave something to be desired but it's still a traditional IdSoft roster that gets realized with expansions and fixes. Unreal is much further away from any "old formula".

Don't think so. Generally I'm really into horror side of things, if there's actually any in F.E.A.R. I don't mind them if the game interest me overall, but overall it just doesn't interest me on itself.
I have to admit that the "special forces" side of thing would be more interesting with seemingly darker tone and all that, but that girl on cover art just screams "generic" to me.
>the weapons might feel “meaty”
Honestly, I'm mostly blind when it comes to that stuff. Not one of those who bothers much with "weapon feel": it's usually "just fine" to me.
>if you’ve not looked into it before it’ll feel like a standard mid 2000s linear shooter with karate
I've seen brief gameplay clips here and there. Nothing really stood out to me: slowing time is cool I guess, but not unique to this title. I suppose that's why I "don't get" the existing excitement around Selaco when F.E.A.R. cited as major inspiration for it: that's just your modern mid 2000 shooter that tries to come off as "retro FPS" and tries too hard by using GZDoom.
Thanks for the answers though.

Yeah they're going the "advanced AI" route with their marketing but GZDoom really isn't the engine to pull that off.

F.E.A.R at least had the strength that the ai and the level design was done together, with stuff they could interact with, while announcing most stuff they did to make the player feel like they're outsmarting them.

Selaco won't even have that, really.

Knightmare's post on Celephais about Q2 Oblivion Source code whereabouts, also a bit on which i believe someone here at /vr/ from 2017 knows of Tim Wright's whereabouts
>The absolute best way to fix the problem is to get Oblivion ported to KMQ2, where "index: overflow" is not a problem. This requires the mod's source code. Unless one of the devs finds and releases said source, this will probably require reverse engineering the Linux gamei386.so included with Oblivion. This .so includes debug info, such as function and variable names. Someone who's really good with assembly code will need to decompile it with a tool like Ida or Ghidra and reconstruct the source from the annotated assembly code produced by the decompiler.

>"I believe Argh had the source and was also working on a patch many years ago. Not sure if he still visits this board though." Argh disappeared in '05 or '06 (back when he was working on ArghRad 3.0 that was never finalized) and hasn't been heard from since. Odds are he's deceased or in prison. Unless you can identify him from his email address and track down his family/estate (not easy, as there are tons of Tim Wrights out there), and then ask nicely for any Q2-related files on any computers/storage that remain, you won't be getting anything from him.

I liked that the enemies in Shadow Warrior '13 were distinct in their roles and not all just a various dudes with guns, like many games of the time period, and that they would require differing strategies. I was really pissed at Shadow Warrior 2 dumbing down the gameplay extraordinarily (and particularly pissed that it's a cutrate Borderlands clone).

In part, like the concept of a young Lo Wang as a cringe Redditor nerd, because that makes it fun to laugh at him when he's made fun of for saying or doing something stupid, but at the same time he does have his cool side. I was kind of hoping that he would grow older and more hardened as the games went, less foolish, more wise, and becoming the confident and sadistic warlord he is in the original.
SW2 doesn't really do that much, beyond making him look older, it also does the awful decision of adding some annoying bitch to nag at him, to work as some sort of 'conscience', which I feel is strongly misguided. Maybe it's just me, but Lo Wang always struck me as a bit of an anti-hero, who doesn't necessarily do the right things because the thinks they're the just and moral thing to do, but more for personal gain and bloodlust (SW13 reflects this better).

I like SW13 a lot, though I do recognize that it has a number of problems, in gameplay but also story and narration (it's mostly decent, but there's some gaps and rough parts). I think it's a game which would be worth maybe remaking, if they got the same voice actors back for Lo Wang and Hoji, and largely kept the plot the same. Then they pretend that SW2 never happened.
I have very reserved expectations for SW3. Given that he seems younger, I wonder if they DMC2'd it and realized they wrote themselves into a shit corner, and just want to avoid the consequences of it, so it doesn't seem like they're going to progress him to the older and cooler Lo Wang any time soon.

i think 90% of SW13's problems come from difficulties scaling enemy health rather than damage. if "insane" enemies had normal tier health but double the damage of "heroic" enemies, it'd be much more pleasant.
the other 10% is the shotgun sucking tremendous ass.

SW2 is still an unbalanced mess and would've been better without the full-on looter shooter elements, but it's sooooooooooooo much more fun with better gunplay and movement than SW13

Really? In spite of the fact that there's only 10 actual levels in the entire game which get recycled endlessly? I found it frustrating as hell that I ran into the same major level chunks over and over in like a 50 hour game.
SW13's level design could be lacking in inspiration and variety at times, but once you were done with a level you didn't see it again.

>>8578917
It's been a while since I played it, but didn't the enemies hurt a lot more on higher difficulties?

>gunplay
This was a lot better in SW2 in some ways, in that the guns just felt more solid and more satisfying, the guns in SW13 felt pretty floaty and like they were lacking effect. Meanwhile, the shotguns and grenade/rocket launchers in SW2 actually felt very nicely mighty, and the swordplay is nicer (even if that part already felt good in the previous game).

it tries to be 3 things,a modern shooter,a more classic shooter, and a first person hack and slash and it does all 3 poorly, the guns are total shit, the melee is unfun and gives me more strain than emacs, and the modern and retro elements don't mix well at all.

I can see the dislike for dolled up linear levels (and SW13's aren't anything special), but open levels with nothing but the same content over and over (meaning there's close to zero exploration by ratio), and brainless combat, it rubbed me in all the wrong ways.

I probably don't have a great frame of reference because I have basically played no such games otherwise, and i also went in completely blind, with no expectations at all.

As much as I admire the use of "older" engines (either actually old ones or source ports), it's hard to deny how ultimately its too rough to work out the project you desire. However, that's more about the scope. Doesn't mean you shouldn't just go and use Unity instead: you don't have to be such a tryhard.

It seems like they're doing to scripting route, similar to FEAR, which means that it all depends on how smart they are with scripting.
FEAR nailed AI for the era because despite being artificial it seemed very intelligent. It was, at the time, the pinnacle of faking it.

FEAR also had level design that accomodated said AI, it wasn't all scripting. office-type levels and squad encounters meant that if you don't rush in, the enemies would spread out, but if you do, they would have easier time flanking you.
the combat aftermath is also way above most modern games.
sequels were a massive downgrade in every regard.

Technically it was scripting but it wasn't all hard scripting like you got in say HL1. Depending on the situation, they had interactions with map elements they might use.

It was still a lot of fakery to make them seem way more intelligent than they were but that obviously paid off.

There was also some hard scripted stuff with the combat, usually shit like the heavy armor enemies busting through doors and starting a mini boss fight.

The lava platforms in the valley of pain do damage, but it's -2 vs -20 of the lava. They're mostly to just pressure you (since you almost always have a lot of health and armor if you're not blowing yourself up) to keep moving.

In the valley, there are already monster blocking linedefs. The best answer is to either make room for yourself, or switch to the only other weapon I give you (which is in a secret).

As for those platforms, they're tied to a secret. All of the secrets in this map are tied to environmental cues and/or just being aware of your surroundings. The only one you can find by wall humping is an untagged secret.

SW2 wasn't even procgen non-linear, it was fake procgen because it had like three or four different chunks for each level type, which were then rotated and assembled together. Not only was this grossly repetitive and meant that all exploration was consistently the same (treasure chests and monster spawns remain in the same spots each time), there were actually lots of bugs and problems with the joining of these large chunks.

SW2 really has incredibly bad level design for a first person shooter, this is the kind of effort I would have expected from Capstone if they were resurrected as evil cyborgs in the 2010s.

This is the lamest thing for me.
Male protags can be cringy at times, but 99% of the time female protags are cringy.
It's like all of the development time these virgins had went into ripping off better games and didn't have any left to allocate into researching female behaviour.
If they did, we might've gotten a woman with actual style and not some creep's domme/ quirky fantasy.
Think of the Greek mythology. You'll never see anything resembling Hera, Athena or Artemis, personality-wise in video games, and these are perfect archetypes if you want a strong female character.
A game doesn't need to have a big plot to have a stylish protagonist, but it's depressing how often we get shit females.

in a way, this arguement about diversity in games reminds me of smash talk (yes i know) and how people came up with meme terms like "scrimblo bimblo" or something
because there are games where main characters can be more interesting, whether it has to do with gameplay, aesthetic, story, animation or just marketing mascots
even fps characters can be interesting but what makes this genre is that you don't really see the protagonist because he or she is you
maybe that's why fps started to have less effort into characters as years went by
sometimes indie games can suffer because you can tell they want to "defy" a certain status, but can still conform to another
you just need to "read the room" better if you really want to be unique

Obviously not exactly the same but it's the same idea as the generic JRPG young silent boy. He is there in the cutscenes, emoting and all, but it's still obviously a self insert. Generic bald military guys are made to make you feel like a military badass inserted into the game world.

I don't mind the Doom Slayer and don't find it cringe even after TAG2, but maybe that's because I never took Doom seriously? Like, there is a bunch of lore exposition there for those who want it and I even read it all but at the end of the day I'm in hell with an army of knights leading a charge against Mecha-Satan and that is fun even if the boss fight sucked.

At least something the nu-doom games got right was continue his streak of never getting what he deserves and every victory being undercut by something worse happening

>Pre-Doom 1: goes against CO's orders to kill civilians, gets sent to Phobos as a result
>Knee-Deep: Cleans the entire moon base, dies by demon firing squad and goes to Deimos in Hell
>Shores: Clears Deimos, finds out he's in Hell
>Inferno: Hell gives him a portal to earth, his rabbit is dead and demons are taking over the world
>Flesh: Kills another mastermind, finds out demons have succeeded in taking over the world (if Sigil is canon, it's even worse: he finds out he's only in Limbo and gets sent further back into Hell by Baphomet)
>Doom 2: Saves humanity and waits for death, only for them to find the source of the invasion for him to destroy; has to clean up afterwards
>Evilution: Now the space marine commander; entire base on Io was overrun by a demon ship while he's on a walk; gets revenge and goes on vacation until Plutonia happens
>Plutonia: While on said vacation, demons start invading from the nearby particle accelerator bases; gets up and stops the invasion yet again before the military can actually respond; retires this time, only for Doom 64 to happen
>64: Is reactivated after the Mother Demon attacks; pretty much embraces the suck at this point, kills her, and stays in Hell to stop them from invading, only to be sent back out from hell by her sister in the Lost Levels; kills HER and picks back up right where he left off
>Pre-2016: Inducted as a Sentinel, becomes a demigod, gets a new suit and sword, and kills the Titan, only to be lured into a temple which collapses in on himself
>2016: Freed by Hayden, he gets back into the fray and kills Pierce, only for Hayden to steal his sword and teleport him to fuck knows where.

I could go on with Eternal, but character limit

Also make sure you're using a port that supports MBF21. All feedback is appreciated. This map is basically me unleashing my stream of consciousness into virtual form. So each room is completely different from one another. Whatever idea popped into my head I mapped it and moved onto the next. If things seem weird then that's why. Ammo and enemy spawns are probably fucked in some spots so please give me any suggestions you might have.

All purpose, possibly OTEX if you want lots of details or CC4-tex if you want to go for more original look but with more variants. Or 32in24 pack. There's a lot of packs with vartious themes. I think CC4 is simply the largest compilations.

If you want just one pack, move TEXTURE1, TEXTURE2, PNAMES, SWITCHES and ANIMATED and everything between F_START and F_FINISH and P_START and P_FINISH to your wad. When you are done, you can use maintenance to clean out unused textures (I think they finally learned to not delete switches and animation frames) flats and finally patches.

Hey niggers, I'm starting an informal/experimental year long project. It'll run concurrently with any other projects this year. Basically no rules, just make something this year and submit it. It'll end up as a grab bag of any original content you can think of, especially gimmicky/weird/low effort one-off ideas that wouldn't fit into other projects. If you need any clarification on the rules feel free to ask, I tried to make them as open as possible to any kind of submission.

The /vr/ Mondo Project is a rip-off of the Doomworld Mega Project series. The purpose of the project to encourage creativity and bolster /vr/ as a mapping and modding community.
RULES:
- Submit as times as you would like by the end of 2022.
- Any kind of playable custom content for any RETRO FPS game is considered a valid submission. Maps, gameplay mods, etc.
- Updates are allowed but will be considered new submissions.
- Include the phrase "/vr/ Mondo Project" with your submission so that I can find them all.

The submissions will be compiled into a zip with each submission given its own folder. Please include a txt with some information about how to play your submission and credits for any resources used.
I will be reposting this at the start of each new month. Please do not add this project to the news post.

I dunno. If this is going to be a Megawad then that seems like a terrible idea. Maybe limit the game or If you're just talking about a collection of various /vr/ creations put together into a single zip file it might work.

I was thinking the latter. It wouldn't be a compiled megawad you load like DUMP or something, just a folder with a bunch of files for different games. I'm willing to work on the ruleset a bit if people don't like it, maybe limiting to only Doom maps. I did want to include gameplay mods since mapping tends to get most of the attention.

A-perfect-a tracers-a every time! Just-a like-a chicken man intended! No more-a bugs in my delicious ragu! It's going to take many hours of testing to convince me that I didn't horribly break something when I implemented this. In other news I gave the pain elemental a distinct melee sound and some particles when it does its little bite, and I unfucked the invis upgrade the cheap way by just making it roll a 50-50 on whether or not a projectile will be "stored" to pass through you so you can't just wallhug and dodge literally 100% of bullets anymore.

GZDoom has a few advantages if you wanted to make a game with it.
>All the shit you need (options, menus, saving/loading, language options) comes standard
>Saving/loading being the big one, as doing either of these things is ridiculously convoluted in engines like Unity or Unreal Engine
>DECORATE is easy to learn and lets you make stuff really fast
>ZScript allows you even greater control over what the engine can do
>It's compatible with Doombuilder, meaning you have a great level editor at your fingertips
>Being compatible with Doombuilder means you have a huge pool of experienced mappers you can call on
>You can use stuff like dynamic lights, 3d platforms, 3d models and ramps with it now

As for the downsides:
>It can only use a single CPU core at a time (due to being based on code that was first written in the late 90s)
>It also has poor performance with 3d models, dynamic lights and 3d platforms
>The process of adding a 3d platform is extremely convoluted
>The documentation for ZScript is still poor and it's more like learning an actual programming language
>There are still certain things ZScript can't do as well, so your project will most likely be a mix of ZScript/ACS/DECORATE
>Still has a lot of Doom's limitations, like sprites requiring extremely specific file names
>Ultimate Doom Map Format doesn't have some cool stuff from PrBoom+ like conveyor belts (I'm not 100% on this one though, someone feel free to correct me)
In spite of all that, it's probably the most drama free engine you can use to build a retro shooter. Recreating all the shit GZDoom does from scratch in another engine is a huge pain in the ass.

Probably not, but it heavily depends on the scope of the project. It's more likely I would've considered GZDoom is I was making something like REKKR... I guess there's a reason why you can't use DOSBox instead (likely the fact that you need a licence from id and they wouldn't provide it or something), but otherwise I would've just let others to pick their source port of choice.
In regards with eDuke32 & DarkPlaces: although I enjoyed both Ion Fury and WRATH, its obviously how difficult and timeconsuming it is to both learn and create games like that due to remaining limits and lesser popularity of the engines, which results in fewer guides and such.
When it comes to creating your own retro FPS, I think the best course of action is either use Unity or follow in HROT's footsteps by developing your own engine. The key factor for me would be also to set some clear limitations to myself in order to not overestimate the project and ensure low system requirements. Not that I would do any of that as I'm indecisive idiot with no talent, but this path seems like the best one in the long run with all the potential downsides.
