So it seems that top down shooters get all the love, but what are your favorite side scrolling shooters?
Pic related. Had Super R-Type as a kid and I remember it being a mega achievement between me and my sister when we somehow made it to a new stage.

GBA had some mediocre shmups/ports, like the glitchy R-Type 3 or the underwhelming Sigma Star Saga. But Gradius Galaxies I think was on par with the NES games (they seem to follow the same exact formula). I didn't play much more recent Gradius after that.

Am I the only one that feels this way about shumps?

It seems that whenever I buy a new shmup, I have a lot of fun with it at first, until the 3rd or 4th level, that's when the enemy bullet speed and density become so great that it's impossible not to die a million times over. At that point, due to the amount of repetition and memorization that is necessary to make further progress, the games become a chore to play.

As much as I have enjoyed this genre in the past, I'm beginning to think that shmups aren't worth the trouble. I don't see myself having the ability to tolerate the amount of repetition to ever one-credit any of them, so then why bother playing them? I'm thinking of selling off my collection.

>> No.866946

The truth is, most shmups are arcade games that were designed to destroy the player and to steal quarters from naive children. It's only possible to one-credit them because it's possible to memorize every inch of the game. But very few people will have the tolerance for the amount of repetition required to do so. So, for most of us, playing shmups will only lead to disappointment, as we will never feel the ultimate satisfaction of the one-credit. So the question I ask you all is... Why fucking bother trying?

>> No.866947

Who says you have to one credit them? Just try your best and have fun. You are taking games way too seriously and it will kill your love of games in time. I speak from experience.

But the outcome is always the same. I play half way through the game and then quit due to the ridiculous amount of memorization required. Why buy a game that you know will leave you unsatisfied? I'd rather spend that money on a game that will give me a sense of accomplishment. Shmups make me feel like a loser.

>> No.866983

I like to call this the touhou effect, most CAVE games now come with selectable difficulty settings, that change the actual level design and not just proectile density/speed.

Mushihime Futari had a pretty cool heaven mode (I think that's what's called) that was super casual easy but at the same time really gratifying.

Anyway, if you're emulating get some cheats on your MAME.

Play shmups with save states. Seriously. And replay a few times. Then you will notice you are able to do entire levels without having to reload once, then most of the entire game.

Don't get me about the savestates, they are useful to learn the game and practice while having SOME fun, eventually they aren't needed. So think of them as a tricyle before passing onto the bicycle.

>> No.870023

>>870019
Bad analogy, because riding a tricycle does not improve your bicycle riding skills. Save states let you focus on the most difficult parts of the game, and you play exactly as you will play them for real later, so your skill greatly improves.

My favourite side-scroller, and one of my favourite games ever, is Parodius Da!. I still think it's the best in the series because none of the ships are blatantly overpowered and the level design intergrates the bell powers in really interesting games, whereas in the later games there's just too much scoring focus on using the purple bells all the time. I do still love Gokujou and Sexy, however.

Another one of my favourites is Macross; Scrambled Valkyrie on the SFC. This game is literally nothing but solid memorisation, and I love it for it. It gets to the point where if you memorise it to an extent, you don't even need to be good at shmups to play and beat it. So I can just pop it in and blast shit, feeling like a god but having none of the prowess. It feels more like a platformer or run and gun with a flying character than a shmup at times.

The only flaw I have with it is that while the enemy capturing mechanic is brilliant, due to it's nature experimenting by capturing different enemies isn't practical. If you attmempt to capture any ship, you lose your current captured ship - however, some enemies cannot be captured, but you lose your ship anyway for trying to capture it, and there's no way to tell what you can capture and what you can't other than trial and error. Regardless, I love it. My favourite SNES soundtrack too.

Sad thing is, this is one of my favourite genres - between me and my friends I'm the goto "shmup" guy - but I still feel that I've barely played enough of the genre to call myself experienced.

I bought this on vacation in Hong Kong. (lel, best-made counterfeit/box/booklet I've ever seen - it even had the license sticker.)

Would you believe it was about a year before I knew you could absorb certain enemies to become your secondary weapon? I'd already beaten it dozens of times by then. It's probably the easiest shmup that I'd consider fun to play every time to this day.

The one thing I hated about it (one!) was how it defaulted to mono sound instead of stereo. You'd have to switch it yourself in the menu before playing.

>> No.870113

>>870093
Oh yeah, I feel that. I also don't like how you can't hear all of the intro song without moving the cursor on the main menu, which interferes with the sound channels. Otherwise it just goes to the demo.

I can't deny that I kept getting into frustrating ruts before I beat it.

Only counterfeit thing I've ever bought was Gradius Galaxies at a market. In retrospect it's atrocious, the cover label is the box art and you can't save. Disgusting.

>>870063
I've avoided Twin because I keep hearing shit against it. Force is okay so far, there are a lot of "lulls" of nothing which some Darius games are famous for, but the level design isn't bad at times. This looks like Taito's answer to Thunder Force 4 and Gradius 3 as there are a lot of similarities.
