I've been playing it a bit recently because it's the game that gets the least justed by ninty's shitty 64 emulator on Switch. I'm starting to "get it" after years of dismissing it, but I'd still rather play Tetris. Or PdP. Or Puyo. Or Lumines. I wish the pills were a bit less sticky and let you "roll" them around a little more by constantly rotating them before deciding where you want them to settle. In a game that takes so much pre-planning it's pretty unforgiving to newcomers. You fuck one drop up and you may as well just restart your round.

When I was a kid and still a Tetris virgin I thought Dr. Mario 64 was the shit. But literally any version of Tetris that meets the bare minimum requirements of not controlling like shit and not having dumbfuck gimmicks tacked on is a million times better in terms of gameplay. The only thing I can say for Dr. Mario is that it was simple enough that I could play it with my literal boomer parents so at least there's that. The N64 version is probably the best Dr. Mario experience for music and atmosphere or whatever the fuck but the core gameplay is as slow-paced as ever.
