The last level of this game is so obnoxious it's ruined the entire experience for me.

is the game any good?

The first level is fun. Beyond that, they did everything they could to take a great idea, with great aesthetics and a lot of potential, and make it as frustrating an experience as possible.

if you want a good anime-mech action saturn game try BULK SLASH

No. The only good 3D scotformer on the Shiturn is Croc, but that has a better version on PSX.

This game is so fucking fugly for a 1998 release. How can you stand to play it for more than 2 minutes?

how the fuck did you manage to play long enough to reach last level? This game runs like ass

Despite running at about 20FPS, I really thought Tomb Raider was one of the best examples of a 3D platformer on the Saturn. This is the version that I had when I was young. I played it all the way to the end, and was impressed with how huge the environments were. The PS1 game generally ran at 30fps, and the PC version was locked at 30fps. Games like Tomb Raider and Croc showed that the Saturn could do 3D platformers. Just not as well as the PS1.

For someone who has never played any of the TR games, should I play the first on Saturn or PS1?

PS1, it's a really good game. To this day no games really recapture what it did with 3D spaces. it's definitely the best 3D platformer of its year.

I really like Sonic Team from this era, and I appreciate the aesthetic despite its flaws. Unfortunately, the game suffers heavily from too many contextual controls and, yes, framerate drops so dramatic they often interfere with movement. I don't hate the game, but I wanted to like it a lot more than I did.

Never cared for Tomb Raider myself. Always thought the gameplay was terrible. Sure, it's technically impressive, but not very fun.

Can't believe people pay $600 for this

Thankfully the Japanese version costs a tenth of that. This game is by no means worth even close to $600, and anyone who buys it at that price point is a fucking freak. Can't even imagine it.

Tomb raider feels like ass to play and always has

Or you could just burn it to CD-R and do the chad swap trick method.

Conclusions: The music carried this game, the game should've been an anime, and Sonic Team is dumb for trying to shoenorn Sonic mechanics into anything that isn't Sonic.

>The music carried this game
Not going to disagree too much, but that's a hilarious observation given how the game deliberately played no BGM most of the time. I think the game has great ideas, but each aspect of the gameplay has its own fatal flaw that, with just a slight tweak, would have made the game so much better.

I do agree that using the Sonic rings system made the game incredibly frustrating. Most of the time you can't react quickly enough to hazards, either because the contextual controls interpret your inputs wrong, the camera fucks you (you can't charge your gun and move the camera at the same time), or the game just slows to a crawl and screws your timing. Then the gems fly everywhere except where you are and disappear within seconds. Insane.

Don't you fucks get it, Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga and Deep Fear would've saved the Saturn if Bernie Stolar hadn't killed it in June of 1997 with his dumbass speech.

The Japanese version also has a soundtrack cd which the western version is missing

Was stoked to find that in the case, yeah.
