Aside from Sierra are there any good MT-32 games?

Castlevania for Sharp X68000, which also happens to be the best game in the series.

>> No.8183381

Loom, Monkey Island 1&2, Fate of Atlantis from LucasArts. Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max also support MT-32, but in my opinion they sound better with SoundCanvas.

Some japanese computer games (X68000 and pc-98) have mt-32 option.

You connect it through a serial port and it can output sound like any midi synth

Doom actually sounds like ass on a MT-32, as it's a post general midi game

>> No.8183801

>>8183793
technically MT-32 is PRE-midi era. which is way it sounds shitty on midi-controlled games like Doom and others. MT-32 was hot in the late 80s early 90s

MT-32 is a MIDI device, but it's not a General MIDI device, that's the distinction. It has its own proprietary layout of MIDI data and feeding it GM music results in messed up instruments.

IMO I’d prefer it to the SC-55 but that’s only because I’ve been hearing shitty software renditions of the sound canvas for so long I can no longer differentiate the original. Also as a pianist Yamaha’s acoustics have always sounded better than Roland’s.

thank windows for using a stripped down version of the Roland SC in windows 98 for MIDI. it sounded like shit without the reverb and chorus effects and now people's impression of good midi is tainted because they think it sounds like 'computer music'

This one's existence perplexes me: Atari Corp's Tempest 2000 for PC. It came on CD with Red Book audio. If you did not want CD music you had an option of SoundBlaster and MT-32. It does not support General MIDI, but supports MT-32. In 1996. Why?
And to add insult to injury: the original Jaguar game used mod files for music. The obvious thing would be to have Gravis Ultrasound support for the best quality playback. The game even supports GUS... for sound effects.

Was it? Seems like a particular type of rich hobbyist would bother with it just for gaming. Bet it had sub-PhysX adoption in that space. Never knew anyone who had one. Never seen one in person. I can see it being more popular in Japan, even.

Both Ringworld games have pretty good Roland tunes.
Mechwarrior 2 is also sweet.

Forgot Little Big Adventure. MT32 is good, but the Gravis Ultrasound midi sounds superior.

hot in the sense Sierra was cranking out games with full MT-32 support for it. Whether or not people actually owned one at home is a different story. but by 1993 or so, MT-32 support was uncommon as General Midi became the new norm, which MT-32 didnt support.

it was only 256 colours instead of the jags 16 bit colour but it was also considered an old game at the time

That just atari being atari I guess

Even though somewhat "inferior" to the original jag release, I gotta say I love the DOS version of T2000.

Stunts has MT-32 support, but the engine/tire sounds suck compared to Adlib.

There was a magic midi file which would reconfigure MT-32 into GM-like mode. After that MT-32 Doom would sound pretty cool.
