loyalty to japanese products is maybe part of it, but that could be solved easily by sourcing japanese parts with the intention of making a japanese system. either way I don't believe they won't buy american. xbox failed because it was simply inferior to the dreamcast. Instead of a VMU memory card, you had an opaque green jewel. good move for ergonomics? I don't see it that way. I view this as a slap in the face from microsoft. It might have been an oversight, but the result is the same. why buy a machine like the xbox when it looks like a soul stripped dreamcast? All the major players in video games have had their roots in amusements and arcades. I'm talking cotton candy, light guns, roller coasters, arcades... If you want to put a successful console on the market, you better not have some half baked vision of what video games actually are. That only works if you are a giant like sony and manage to attract the people with real vision (like Namco), and guess what? sony already has that role.

Apple products are big hulking black boxes with oversized controllers and a predilection for shooters, sports titles, and western RPGs. Xbox was one of the most aggressively and obnoxiously 'MURICA video game products (Xbox 360 was slightly better) ever released, and I say that as an American.

It would've been a much smarter move for Microsoft to prop up the Dreamcast instead of entering the market by themselves. Of course it worked out fine for them in America but having Sega as the public face for Microsoft hardware would've got them more attention in Europe and Japan

Xbox just kept traction post-chip-based-piracy-era in our country because the price is more accesible than PlayStation's and Microsoft accept our currency.

xbox in japan was like saturn in america, completely mismatched intent vs. market. It doesn't help that Japanese devs who would have been putting out Xbox games were unwilling or unable to develop for it. I don't know if you would ever get a straight answer out of Japanese devs as to why they didn't go for it; Japanese would rather lie than be public and direct about the problem.

Apple products are well-designed for a global target audience. There's nothing about them that is "america-specific". The same can't be said about Xbox; It's more like other American products in Japan, which Japanese friends have explained, often ignore market differences or just plain don't change shit that should adapt to the local culture. Best example given was american cars; Apparently, US automakers don't even make them right-side drive in Japan, even though they drive on the opposite side of the road to US. You're just expected to put up with the wheel being on the wrong side for the roads. Some people will do that, sure, but not many compared to those who offer a product fit for your market.

It reminds me of kinect. Kinect was clearly designed for middle america, where home sizes would warrant a big family room. The marketing for Kinect in Japan was absurd, as they pushed this diagram showing how in a small apartment, you could still play it if you put it in a corner and stood at the opposite corner of the room. Once again, they didn't design or modify the product to fit the market, they just stubbornly insisted that it was good as-is and that you are the problem for not having US-style home and lifestyle. That's not exactly a resounding message for success.

I've not found any examples of these right-side drive cars actually being sold in Japan, despite their manufacture for other markets. The ones that I have seen mentioned as being sold as right-hand drive was Jeeps. Admittedly, this could also be a product of their own weak sales; I have read that GM has, as of a few years ago, largely restricted their sales of cars in Japan to certain "special" models that might appeal to the rare Japanese US auto enthusiast. Given the lack of sales this would naturally bring with it, it's unlikely they'd then do separate construction for them, especially given that being "unique imports" is likely another selling point to this unusual customer.

If I recall correctly, in Ace Attorney 2, in the Japanese version, the case with the girl pretending to be her sister, the Japanese version made it a point that the car was an American car so she was driving in the opposite side for the sake of the contradiction in her testimony.
This go localized in the US as "an European sportscar".

Also WTF IS THAT CONTROLLER????
THIS is what an Xbox controller looks like. Wtf is with those buttons on the left side.
Also I forgot but why the fuck does the Xbox have the white and black button when it already has Start and Back button? What's with that overkill. Doesn't exist anymore on 360. Been a while since I last played Xbox so I am confused why this was needed and when it got used and what for.

A large percentage of the Xbox library wasn't localized at all. They'd routinely leave everything in English and only swap the region coding. And they never even tried to release several major games like the Mortal Kombats. The effort was half assed.
