In the GC, Xbox, PS2 and Dreamcast era, a lot of game franchises went with tropical settings for new games.
I think it was because water tecnology was getting really good and they wanted to show it off. Plus, the "real is brown and grey" trend hadn't started yet.

Duke Caribbean : Life's A Beach

It's an episode of new levels for Duke Nukem 3D, the levels are pretty good, but more importantly almost everything in the game is given a tropical vacation reskin. It's just as fun to play as the base game, on top of having a very cheery and comfy air to it. The game even starts with you riding in on a wave onto the beach front of a hotel, with chicks in bikinis tanning in the sun.
There's all new voice lines for Duke Nukem by Jon St. John, and a soundtrack with a mix of upbeat marimba, trumpet, and steel drum tunes, along with some more moody tracks as well.

The guns are are all restyled as squirtguns and explosive coconuts, the latter giving a slight Gilligan's Island vibe (if Gilligan went nuts). You also have the items, health items are now bananas, small medkits are lone bananas, a bunch are a regular medkit, and the portable 100hp medkit is a bamboo crate of bananas, further the steroids are now a bottle of hot sauce, the protective boots a pair of sandals, and well, the scuba gear is the same because it already fit. The monsters are all in vacation getups, aloha shirts, sunglasses, shorts, leis, etc, as is Duke, who's bare legs and sandals are seen clearly as you stomp a Pig Cop in the face.

I love this expansion a lot, it leans a lot more towards Duke Nukem's comedic and less serious side, to just the right degrees.
