Lore trivia:
The ocarina is carved out of one of the time shift stones from skyward sword

Game trivia
During the opening cutscene when Navi flies through the kokiri forest, the deku shield is on top of one of the houses. Potentially an early hiding spot for the item

Easter egg trivia:
After the ending credits, on the the end screen, wait for a bit and there’s an Easter egg where it will play your scarecrow song.

In the GameCube version of the game, the ending credits are a video file instead of playing in engine. Link always walks up to zelda wearing the hylian shield, even if you never picked it up through the whole game. But this also means that the scarecrow song Easter egg never occurs

The introduction of Fi in Skyward Sword basically retcons Ocarina of Time where Link is put to sleep for seven years after pulling out the Master Sword. It's Fi who does this, and she does it so that Link will be the same age as the Link of Skyward Sword when he defeated Demise, since she believes, correctly or not, that the Hero has to be a certain age to seal Demise's spirit.

This is less an obscure secret and more something that never occurred to me personally until recently, but I always I assumed that the sages in Twilight Princess that imprison Ganondorf in the Twilight realm are the sages from OOT, just in spirit form which is why they don't look like the sages from OOT.

But they aren't, because the sages in OOT only become sages in the adult timeline. Twilight Princess continues on from the child timeline, and we know from Wind Waker that the job of sage passes on from generation to generation, so the sages in TP are the previous sages, the ones who existed before Saria, Darunia, Ruto, Rauru, Nabooru, and Impa.

>> No.7864342

Well, Wind Waker Link could use the Master Sword to kill Ganondorf, although you could argue that by then Demise's spirit was no longer there so maybe even a child could use the sword properly.

Probably a well known thing because of speedrunning but I find it kinda hilarious that literally everything is faster than running straight ahead. The Hyrule castle town drawbridge is timed so you have to spend a night in Hyrule field fighting of the stalchildren the first time you leave the Kokiri forest, but if you backflip, sidehop, sidestrafe, roll, or backpedal you'll get there in time.

It's just a quirk of the gameplay design that you probably need the most control of your velocity when moving towards something, so it ends up being the slowest way to move versus the others which are kind of evasive techniques, but it's still funny.

Speculative, but the carpenters that the Gerudo capture in Ocarina of Time may be gay stereotypes in Japanese. One of them calls Link a "cute boy" upon rescue and they use feminine pronouns to identify themselves.

This might subtlety explain their comical run animation, why they believed being a carpenter wasn't "cool" and wanted to join an all-female group and why their boss calls them "wimpy" [へなちょこ] in the english version.

The Zelda timeline isn't literally canon. It's from the Hyrule Historia, an in universe well historical document from historians piecing together the timeline as best they can. Like what real historians do. It can be changed to anything Nintendo wants in the future and shouldn't be taking 110% serious like a series bible.

Its similar to how Lord of the Rings is inaccurate and not 100% canon to what really happened, as it is really the story Frodo wrote on his travels.

originally the triforce was supposed to be a microchip and there were going to be dogu statues for enemies. Dogus are said to be ancient alien astronaut suits in Japan pop culture.

Aounuma keeps putting ancient alien shit in the games. It was real subtle in Wind Waker but Twilight Princess started to get blatant with its Jomon statue aesthetic, and how the plot was like an alien invasion but from another dimension and not space, ans Midna was a little gray nan. Dogu statues were from the Jomon period too. Then in BotW that's just straight up what the sheikah aesthetic is, Jomon but even more technological than ever before. They just didnt outright say the Goddesses were ayy lmaos yet but that's the implication. And they finally made a dogu robot.

I can't speak for the 2D games, but kinda yes.
The number of characters in OoT/MM that look like someone set fire to a thalidomide baby are in the vast minority compared with the later 3D titles. Personally I hate the WW style and I don't think Toon Link is a thing that should exist, but in Twilight Princess all the minor characters look like Hyrule has an epidemic of foetal alcohol syndrome. I don't know if it's an Aonuma thing in that he likes or requests wonky looking NPCs, but it's an issue with all 'his' games; even in Skyward Sword you've got this menagerie of mutants populating the lesser cast, and it kinda persists into BotW with the gerudo for example looking like a mix of palumboism and synthol freaks- the rest of them you don't really notice aside from maybe the gay stereotype carpenters because in that game you don't spend a lot of time interacting with NPCs.

yeah. I mean I like wind waker for what it is but the series probably only became experimental with artstyles because of it. I think I read somewhere that oot was what they were shooting for in earlier games so idk why they changed it for ww, other than "lets do the opposite of majoras mask" but its been a swinging pendulum since then, which bleeds out from artstyles into gameplay too.
>ww is extra lighthearted to contrast with mm
>tp is extra edgy & oot like in reaction to ww
>ss tries and fails to merge ww & tp to get a middleground identity for the 25th anniversary, and exaggerated the formula to a fault

I've always fucking wanted a mod that does this, and surprisingly to this day no such mod exists despite it being such an enticing concept. Seriously, why has no one attempted this? The only OOT mods (exempting rando) out there are edgy or super short total conversions like Master of Time and the one where Saria is a talking sword for some reason, and REALLY shitty ones like Nimpize Adventure (which is just Master Quest but worse and with a weird shoehorned story using MM maps) and Fate of the Bombiwa which is complete utter trash.

Can we ever get an honest to god "third" quest mod that just combines OOT and MM into a single adventure with logical progression and items and mechanics from both games? By modding OOT maps into MM or vice versa surely something could be done, whichever has more code or entities to work with allowing for the most out of both.

Fucking IMAGINE scaling Stone Tower as Adult Link with the megaton hammer to smash down buttons, or going through the Fire Temple as Goron Link playing the Elegy of Emptiness to press down blue switches, etc. etc. and having extended mask trade quests across Hyrule.

Kaze if you're reading this drop whatever boring mario mod it is that will just get dmca'd anyway and make this happen, I will personally paypal you $50 or more if you include all the dungeons and merge the stories and aesthetic.

But that's not the interesting part. In Master Quest Water Temple, there are two hookshot pillars right next to the door. To skip the boss key, all one needs to do is climb atop one of these pillars, then sidehop and jumpslash into the door. It is every bit as simple as it sounds.

It is interesting that the lunar child who gives you the Fierce Deity Mask (to play 'good guys and bad guys", ie. Onigokko) informs Link that he'll be playing the role of the bad guy/oni.
The FDM in Japanese is called the Kishin Mask/鬼神の仮面 which is interesting because, A. it literally means Fierce God Mask, B. it has the embedded character for oni (鬼), and C. Most masks have an honourific お in their name which this omits implying it's something not worth honouring (only other mask I think which lacks this is the Bremen mask which itself is a kind of pun in Japanese; Bremen ~ Burei-men = ブレー面 = rude mask).

Anyway factor into this the description on acquiring the Fierce Deity Mask,
>"You got the Fierce Deity's Mask! Could this mask's dark powers be as bad as Majora? Tremendous power is emanating from within..."
And yeah it seems like this is some seriously dark shit Link is playing with if you're told it's as bad as Majora, and Majora's avatar is calling you the badder guy of the two.

I was really hoping BotW2 would be the Majora's Mask to BotW since it's a same-engine sequel set directly after the first game, but that trailer they showed off earlier this week makes it look like they've spent most of the time since BotW1 jerking off.
Truthfully I was expecting something like the Geofront from Evangelion; that you'd be exploring some kind of under-dark world sunken beneath Hyrule, like Subrosia or something, but it looks as though it's literally the world map from BotW1 with chunks floating.

I guess COVID fucked their production pretty hard, because what I saw in the E3 trailer looked like less than a year's effort had they been running full-steam ahead. Hell it looked like glorified DLC.

Exactly, from what I've seen, you're exploring a wide open land. But as an adult, you can do that in real life. You can go traveling and walk across fields and go hanggliding and do all that stuff for real. But in real life, you can't reset time and relive 3 days while solving everyone's problems. BotW would be a great game for a kid, but I can't imagine wasting so much of my life sitting down playing a camping simulation when I could be camping for real.

eg. In Final Fantasy IX the temporary party members you start the game with have partymember IDs that correspond to to permanent party members you get later on. I actually have a question about this:
Is Navi a traditional fairy, and was rendered as a particle effect purely because it was the N64 and that was all the polygons they could spare/because she was a glorified target reticule; or is a ball of light literally what she's meant to be?

When you factor in the shattered Great Fairies, that look like 'something', I lose perspective on what they were trying to represent.

In an Iwata asks, Koizumi says he was rebuffed by the programmers when he wanted to add the fairy to highlight the target lock due to N64 limitations. Making Navi a little ball of light was the compromise, and it actually worked out really well because she could change colors in this form.
When it was decided though they fully ran with it, all official artwork of Navi is only in ball form. Lore-wise she is a ball of light and nothing more.
Also, Breath of the Wild brought back ball fairies, so they're still a thing in universe.

I understand, but literally every video game you've ever played has at some level or another things you can do in real life. But you don't have magical magnetic Skeikah powers in real, the ability to produce infinite bombs, and to scale several large hills and mountains and explore caves all in the same day. Being a superpowered person, doing normal things in an extravagant way, in a fantasy world, fighting off swarms of bats and giant monsters--none of this equates to whatever you get up to on your average hiking trip.

>WW did open world better. There was shit to do and expect outside of 3 different outcomes.
Except the King of Red Lions routinely blocks off directions you're not supposed to go to yet in order to keep the player on track with the story. It isn't till 3/4 through the game that you can actually explore the entire map. Until then, there's no real freedom of exploration, but sure, it did "open world" better. I'm not even shitting on the game, mind you--MM and WW are two of my favorite Zelda games. But I can least be honest about the downward spiral that ultimately gave us Skyward Sword and why Breath of the Wild was a necessary reboot/attempt at returning to basics.

I'm not even saying that BotW was some glorious and perfect return to the 2D series basics, but it sure as hell was a leap in the right direction after the bloated Skyward Sword.

>since it's an absolute chore to play without muh contemporary Nintendo Power tips
Imagine getting filtered by a game that 6 years olds beat in 1986. I myself didn't play it till the late 90s, and I didn't need Nintendo Power (or have an old NP at hand) or the internet to complete it. Every bombed wall, every burnable bush, all of it I found on my own. And I didn't cry about it because I have the mental capacity to understand that going on an adventures means danger and uncertainty, not handholding and cracked walls. 'X' does not mark the spot in real life, nor should it in a good game.

What you call 'mental capacity' is better termed as 'a very high threshold for tedium.' It's probably nothing to be proud of, because it means you have nothing better to do with your time.

Massively filtered. Judging by your 'having nothing better to do with your time', you were obviously too impatient to notice that there are patterns and rules to where bombable walls and burnable bushes are hidden.

It takes several seconds to despawn when killed, which is unusual.

Not sure how obscure this really is, but the Iron Knuckles are actually all brainwashed Gerudos (previously theorized to be Nabooru leftovers). Not only is this obvious when camera clipping, but when the Iron Knuckle sheds armor, you can see a distinctly Gerudo/feminine chest/curves, which just blended in with the rough graphics. Also, one of the Gerudo NPCs has a line suggesting that several Gerudos have gone missing but a rumor smears Nabooru for practicing brainwashing magic at the Desert Colossus.

Why? It’s not like that was the first game the owl was in.

And Gaepora has Kaepora’s name, personality traits and a very similar face. That seems pretty explicit. The only thing he has in common with Rauru is being an old man in orange, and that’s likely a reference to the old men in zelda 1.

So Majora was a dragon who lived in some kind of timeless limbo. Warriors used to arrive to slay him but were eaten. Then this warrior has majora wonder why he hasn't left (implying he can leave? To where time must move because this warrior is from someplace?), then wish for time to move (but time appears to be moving in some way, so its more like he wants to feel alive?) so he is danced to the death. "time is born" but the world crumbled?

very confusing.
I guess it takes place at the end of time & restarts the cycle. the warriors had long stopped arriving, and this one could be a time traveler like link. this dude is supposed to be fierce deity even though he doesnt look much like him right?
Not how I would have written the lore but its interesting.

Majora the dragon ate and destroyed everything (a parallel to the moon destroying everything).

The manga pushes that Termina is an alternate dimension. The timeless world is either another dimension, or maybe it's Termina's big bang moment and the world came to be after the Dragon's death.

I'm pretty sure the traveler is supposed to be a god or something similar. He's surprised when Majora calls him a human, and seems to know a little too much of time and history.

Lol, wtf? It implies the moon has been crying a lot recently (because of Skull kid). Who the fuck wrote this shit?

Right, I remember the full overdump (anyone?) had a line about Death Mountain also being known as Hebra Mountain as a callback to Japanese ALttP, but it's missing entirely from the final. It isn’t. The moon-goddess connection is a huge reach and not remotely concrete, there is some masonic imagery in zelda but you’re superimposing masonic stuff that just isnt represented in the games.

Some parts of adapted material directly contradict source material, like Volvagia’s backstory changing completely. If 90% of the manga is noncanon source divergence just for fun, why would the original stories be accepted as part of game canon?

Even with the mask origins, in-game it was stated to be the creation of an old tribe. I like the mangas but they arent canon to the games in any way. They are very much their own thing.

The Skyward Sword manga is the only one that might be an exception, since it was included with Hystoria.
