Another sprite edit I'm thinking is too good to restrict to Freedoom compatibility. Now If only I could figure out how to change its name and pickup message in all iwads. Doom lets me change its tag to "Power Saw" just fine, but Freedoom refuses to shake its default chainsaw label of "Angle Grinder" no matter how I set up the language lump.

Haven't reached them, but I like the idea of new "vanilla" content for old games. Wish Dark Forces or the Marathon series could get the same.

I guess a purist could complain that the title is dishonest; like Disney bundling fake "deleted scenes" with Star Wars that tie it to their sequels. But I don't take Doom's integrity too personally.

Anyone ever wish the original Doom had been just slightly more advanced, so that the Hell levels could be surreal and non-Euclidean rather than just a gloomy red-sky planet? Maybe at first subtle things like overlapping rooms, but later enemies walking on walls or ceilings. Maybe weirder skies, with faces or giant body parts, or skull or pentagram stars/sun(s)/moon(s). Maybe an early glimpse of Hell through a portal, like the one of Xen in Half-Life. Later you have to go through portals to progress; each one taking you further from normal space.

BuildGDX seems to be a decent sourceport for Blood. Played a few levels and aside from a weird graphical issue where the gray cultists would show up as weird wireframe things everything was fine and fucking around with the settings fixed that issue as well...

Alright, I think I'm about happy with how this looks, unless anyone has a major objection. The tubes are now hexagonal and have half the segments. Plasma battery is flipped around. Replaced the straps with rope because the mdl exporter kept doing weird shit to it (along with giving me numerous, very vague errors that took me forever to get around).

Should be up on the Mega now. Just need to find it a more fitting sound effect and try to give the glowy bits a passive animation like I did with the mdl versions of the DOE ammo boxes (still need to fix those though).

With valiant, I went down to ITYTD and was still overwhelmed. At that level, you take half damage, but it doesn't necessarily have an impact on spawns. Having 50 fireballs launched your way, with monster closets and flanking, is going to mess anyone up, regardless of difficulty. Yeah, hell, if you need something new, you can dig through Doom, Strife, Heretic, and Hexen, those are all the right resolution and detail, and wouldn't be hard to convert to Quake's palette.

Of course, many of Quake 2's textures can be adapted for Quake 1 and Doom, and some of Doom's and Quake 1's textures can be adapted for Quake 2.

Romero felt stifled by limitations imposed by Carmack (whether or not those limitations were genuine, or Carmack not liking the idea or wanting to bother).
He wanted more auteur game development, even though Wolfenstein 3D and Doom had been very much so, with strong personal touches from most of the team, and Quake still so, even if it was a massively rushed compromise to reach an uncomfortably close deadline.

It's worth nothing that Quake's engine actually took Carmack a lot of time, and caused him a lot of stress and frustration, which meant there wasn't a lot to work with yet for a large part of the development time, at the same time Romero was spending quite a lot of time not actually working on Quake, if he wasn't engaged in side projects like Hexen, Final Doom, Strife, DWANGO, etc (which did bring in money and prestige, well except for Strife), he did also waste a lot of time deathmatching with fans and coworkers, or being jerked off by the gaming press.

Romero's ego was swelling, the game wasn't developing as fast as it had to (for both Romero and Carmack reasons), and Carmack was growing very high strung and bitter. It was a period full of friction.

You know what would be a cool idea for a game? An action oriented space game, where you can fly a fighter, a freighter, get out on foot, etc... But you would be mining out planets to construct an empire. Starting the mining process would take a lot of energy and worth it in the end, but usurping an established mining colony would be free energy if you can succeed.

It would still be a huge undertaking, but if you focused on the fun I think you could make something like that work without it ending up with feature creep.
The universe would have to be quite large and long travel would have to still be fun. So on-board ship features would still be necessary. Mini games and such... Just not over-complicated one. Tetris is never going to not be fun. On-board holodeck deathmatch... Things like SS2's gamepig... Ah well.

I'd love to see a military / cop themed retro shooter where you basically play as organization like the HECU marines in tone and the weapons and equipment are based on [but not strictly limited to] modernish military hardware.
Game would be divided into 'operations' and you'd earn money between levels based on your efficiency and you could use the money to buy upgrades / sidegrades / consumables etc. Like you could call in an airdrop of friendly troopers but that would cost ya and you could only initially call them in outdoors or in areas with skylights. Besides the handcrafted maps the game would have an Oblige-style procgen built in where you could generate a map or a ''mission'' of like 3 maps back to back.

The gravity gun existed during Doom 3's development, and what it was, was a level design tool, you'd use it to pick up and throw props around the place to make it look realistically like the room was messed up (and then save the positions and export them into the map editor). Which games have the best RPG/roguelike mods to them? I remember playing a pretty kickass Duke Nukem 3D mod that had randomly powered up/increased spawns of enemies based on your level/score, skill coin droppage (which was slightly annoying but they did gravitate towards Duke) and then a whole skill upgrade system which was nice and meaty. Right now mappers have to place it themselves, but I could add a setting on enemies to drop a selected weapon (unless PD2 already has that, not sure). I've also been thinking about adding selectable modifiers to the start map, so weapons dropping from certain enemies (shotguns from grunts, super nailguns from edies, laser rifles from enforcers, etc.) could be one of them.

To swing you around to somewhere you can't directly shoot with the grapple. It works best if you switch to while in the middle of a normal pull, but it is fairly preferential.

From what I heard, Ghostrunner's development was kind of a mess: game got leaked before release and there was some budget missmanagement or something along those lines (just look at the game's ending).
It's also worth noting that OML didn't get any royalties for the game since All in! Games didn't give any info (to be fair, it was in February; before IP was bought by 505 & sequel got announced). It's just kind of shady.

Playing Duke, how the fuck do you reliably deal with pig cops? The only way I really can thus far is hoping RNG gives me some grace and I can get two shells off without them firing at all, or they fire and miss. Blood has plenty of dynamite to instantly decimate cultists you see, and in Shadow Warrior you're rarely ever without some kind of explosive, or your autoshotgun. Blood is the harder game? Bullfuckingshit.

Also maybe it's just the "first episode is best" thing, but man am I enjoying this more than Blood or SW. The sound has the RIGHT amount of crunch, it's really satisfying to hear your shotgun go off. It's like all the sounds are fed through radio wire, but it gives it a lot of grit. SW has this too, but Blood doesn't.

Nothing really new to show, as I have mainly been working on sounds (there are basically no good water jet/psshhh sounds around and no crying non-toddlers, so I will probably have to do the crying boy voice myself) and more frames for the player model's rotation. I am already dreading having to make the 45° rotations.
That said, to the people actually making monster sprites, what do you do first? Finish all frames and then shade or shade each sprite while you're making it? Because I thought it was smart to just get the general shapes and perspective down before I add details.

I always wanted to make a simple-ish weapon mod that'd be compatible with Dehacked (or at least BEX) so it could've been playable on prBoom+
So I'm trying to figure out how to DeHackEd via WhackEd4 tool.
I'm opening up other (rare) dehacked weapon mods to see how they do stuff, but when trying to open up D4V's alternative guns - like Vortex Rifle, it throws this error at me:

trying to get Quake to run well on Windows 10 with a software renderer (or at least an accurate look to that of one.) the best I have found so far is Mark V because it supports scaling to nearest neighbor which looks fucking amazing with a 1440p monitor due to that scaling perfectly with 240p, however the mouse input fucks up and I also can't get it to work with the soundtrack. Do any Quakechads here know of any alternatives or fixes? the mouse button tends to just get stuck either on or off and doesn't properly take my inputs. Apparently it can be fixed by setting the polling rate on my mouse to 250 but I'd rather not do that if there's other source ports/fixes.

You can do it via NVidia drivers if you have an RTX card, but I have a 1080ti. It's fucking insane to me that it was never a feature before, like they never opened an older game and saw the vaseline shit shmear or something, not only that but it's LITERALLY the easiest form of math possible. I think there *is* some form of Windows integer scaling, but it only works with windowed applications and the software that exists to force it on applications that don't otherwise support it are lackluster to say the least. see: https://tanalin.com/en/projects/integer-scaler/

Finishing another map for a community project.
