Is the mini Genesis worth the $80 if I plan to add more games to it? Is the experience of playing on one of these better than simply emulating games on my PC with a six button Genesis controller? This purely a subjective feeling, but I'd like to know how often /vr/ uses their mini consoles over emulation. The biggest pro seems to be that I could easily plug this into my TV instead of my computer or laptop.

No, it's just another ARM SoC emulator. Nothing special.

/vr/ doesn't like minis because in most cases they're an objective waste of money. For the same price (or cheaper) you can get a retropi or modded Wii which have way more advantages. If being wrapped in Genesis packaging really makes it feel that more authenticate to you anon then go for it I guess

>> No.7783065

Dont listen to these salty guys. If you want it, go for it. Is worth 60 quid? Probably not. But its convenient and it looks kinda neat.
Your money, your choice friend, I would hold out for a cheaper price though.

Yes, I absolutely love it! Worth it for the USB Sega Genesis 3 button controllers, which you can use on your PC. Plus it's a great display model piece right next to an original Sega Genesis. It's easy to hack and add more games to it.

No

It comes with two great controllers. I'd say yes. No more than $80 though.
Controllers are the main draw for official mini consoles.

Buy one of the 3 button USB controllers individually and stop being a bitch about plugging computers into your TV.

>> No.7783379

Speaking of mini consoles, which is considered the best with hacking taken into account.

Also: Would (You) be more incline to get a mini version of the N64 since the emulation is dogturds?

The AtGames version was actually better. Two, six button controllers, 82 games in the last model, HDMI (other AtGame systems were not), SD card slot for more games and can play original carts as well.

It is objectively *worse* than playing on a pc because of the barebones emulation and higher input delay.

>> No.7784180

its worth it for its plug an play nature if $80 doesn't mean much to you. also i really like the 3 button controllers.

Depends. I'm a lazy piece of shit and didn't like moving mine around all the time. So it was nice to just have it there. If you have the money, sure, go for it.

However, if you plan on emulating anything over 16 bit, you're way better off using a Wii, Xbox, PC, or anything else.

If you like the charm of the menu, check out Launchbox/Bigbox to get that retrostation feel with all the box art instead of clicking on files.

If you have friends who suck at computers and are uber casual in general, they make great gifts when you hack them and load them up with their favorite old school games.

In conclusion:
PROS: Plug and play, easy to hack, convenient to have a retro station hooked up to your TV. Looks cool/nostalgia.

CONS: Can't emulate stuff above 16 bit well, may not be worth the money if you're content with emulating on your laptop.

Just get it, OP. We both know you want to lol. I loved the hell out of my SNESmini before getting my first gaming pc.

I own consoles and collect games for them because I like the feel of using an original console and controller on a CRT. An emulator in a shell that looks like a Genesis on an HDTV is not that experience

I've been a Genesis fan since 91 and I love my Sega Genesis mini. The UI, the games included with it and the fact that I can still use old cheats for games like Sonic 1 & 2, makes this worth owning and playing on my HDTV. Plus I can connect a custom cartridge on it, pretty impressive.

You've obviously never owned a Sega Genesis mini. I have a 3D printed cartridge inserted in my Sega Genesis mini right now.

>> No.7785851

I love mine. I don't like generic menus or consoles that play 10 retro systems. I like that it is stylized to be Genesis from the shape, to the menus, music and especially the controllers.

I hacked it with Hackchi and made sure each game had proper descriptions and boxart. It looks no different than a standard Mini except it has more games.

I like those little touches. Retroarch or Everdrives bland generic menus don't do it for me. I like a little quality in the presentation. It's worth the price of admission.

>>7788058
I don't need an aesthetic cartridge in an original Genesis, since I own plenty of real cartridges I could use on my original Sega Genesis, which I do. I'm happy that I got options between using my original Genesis and my mini Genesis. I even own an HDMI converter which seems to look just fine with my original Sega Genesis.
