Yes. People are still doing roster updates for Tecmo Bowl.

Football games only need buttons for pass and shoot. If I wanted to use all my fingers I'd just have a wank.

Elifoot was the very first football manager. It came out for the ZX-Spectrum, but the version that blew everyone's minds was Elifoot 98, since it had a huge database and country flags. It was developed by a Portuguese guy and it's still going. The website's looks are pretty old school.

for me, the best ever was Ultimate Soccer Manager 98. I still play it occasionally and it had hot-seat multiplayer which was great for playing with family. It wasn't bloated and too time-consuming like Championship Manager/ Football Manager increasingly became over time.

I remember I once beat Cameroon 49-0. Shoot at just the right time and you kick the goalie in the bollocks. Good times.

retro sports games are pretty good stuff, i'm not sure if too many people are still playing them, but i find them fun to go back to every once in a while, they're simple, easy to understand, but not necessarily easy to beat, and easy to learn hard to master is always ideal.

right now i'm trying to beat italia '90 for the master system with china, which is the team with the worst stats in the game, pretty tough, but i'm sure i'll be able to pull it off eventually.

I loved playing ISS pro Evolution 2. Couldn't find a football game after that one that lets you customise every character individually. If I remember correctly you could even change the colour of the shorts and shoes, so the only thing that is the same is the shirt, but even that I believe you could change how long the sleeves were. I'll have to boot it again one of these days.

Did that on the Mega Drive. The trick is to figure out the exact position you can lob into the goal. Keeper AI can't understand it. There's also a diagonal shot from the corner of the box that confuses them, but the positioning is much harder to get right.

that game is phenomenal, all ps1 konami footy games are desu, they made the foundation of what football games are even today in a way.

>>7761906
still haven't attempted to beat the mega drive version with a weak team, maybe i'll try it eventually, only beat it with brazil so far, but i recall these tricks, the diagonal shot always felt satisfying to me for some reason, the main thing there is to go up the field with diagonal long balls, anything else like running or passing is too unreliable.

the master system version is pretty different desu, here is about getting close to the goal and doing a sideways pass for an open goal, otherwise scoring is pretty luck based really, still a fun game tho.

Really underrated isn't it? Good arcade football game. I come back to both versions often. Actually one of the few games where I prefer the PAL version. NTSC is just too damn fast. Maybe the NTSC version was the bad port, come to think of it.

I agree, it's weird actually, most of the football games from the 8bit and 16bit eras that are praised are the ones i have a harder time getting into, and these two that are very disliked overall are some of my favorites, their simplicity is very charming to me in a way.

World Cup Italia '90 was a popular game back in its day, but it's a little unfashionable now, I guess because it was on a bunch of compilations so gets lumped in with shovelware. The only old football game I liked that is still well liked is Sensi, but everyone liked that. Italia '90 is more fun, fight me nerds.

Tried again to win the cup with China, my record was getting to the QF, this time we've reached the SF, but got knocked out by the hosts Italy after being 1-0 up by halftime, that 1-2 hurt badly, hopefully next time we'll take this cup home.

On a different note, it's pretty nice how even in a simple game like this it's possible to feel a huge difference between the team, when it came to me that the most reliable way of scoring was passing sideways in front of the goal, winning with Brazil was almost a non issue until the last couple of matches. With a weak team, in China's case the worst team in the whole game, it's so hard to even get the ball up front and to not concede every match.

Another thing that's charming is that when you play as a strong team you can try to keep the ball and pass it around more, you'll usually manage to not get tackled without much trouble, where as a weak team keeping the ball is ridiculously hard, your best method of getting forward is quick counters using the longer pass, that's similar to real life desu, stronger teams usually have more possession and control, while the weaker teams try to get them on the counter, again, a simple game, but very rich too, i'm enjoying this.
