Totally kills the risk vs. reward factor and makes the games too easy as a result.

Also, discuss your favorite Wario game ITT.

>> No.7741509

they were better for it IMO. instead of having the typical pits and obstacles and having to play the same sections repeatedly if your reflexes aren't fast enough, the challenge was more about being observant and figuring out puzzles and remembering where things are, using your head a bit to figure out how to get make it through the level. it would have sucked having the flow be constantly broken and having to restart at a checkpoint when you fall into a hole or get hit too many times.

>> No.7741510

The reason was probably to encourage more risktaking while making the game more puzzle-like, at the same time you really need to chase every coin if you wanna be a completionist and unlock the final level.

I really like the first game a lot.

Honestly with the way Warioland 2 and 3 were structured, it was often more punishing when you fucked up. Instead of just losing a life and restarting from a checkpoint or at the start of the level, you had to walk your fat ass back to the segment you fucked up.

I should have clarified that's not a bad thing. I enjoy all 4 Warioland games. Though I have a soft spot for 1, it was my first Wario game and I thought it was so cool how he could shoulder check dudes, tossing coins as a weapon is also cool.

>>7741539
True, the levels sprawled in the later games, but in the first one they were real short. Of course, if you got a gameover you'd have to pay for that from your stockpile of coins and treasures.

The shoulder tackle just never gets old, ram into those dudes and *NYOOW!* they go flying off screen with a ricochet sound effect.

To emphasize the more puzzle and exploration elements especially with Wario Land 3. 4 seemed to find a happy medium between all of its predecessors.

because they were wariovanias instead of 2d platformers

I wonder the opposite: Why didn't more games use immortality? It's honestly more fun than being able to die from contact with enemies. I don't find the risk of dying particularly challenging in most games that implement it so it's more like a minor annoyance that could work even better as not in effect at all.

>> No.7741775

>>7741469
The risk is your time, the exact same resource being used in a game with deaths. You do not actually die when your character dies, you lose time. In deathless Wario Land games, fucking up sets you back in the amount of time it took to set up the area for whatever you're doing or causes you to fall to the bottom of a place you're climbing. Time lost. Your time.

>Why did they make Wario immortal in Land 2&3?
Because they already had Super Mario games. Wario is a different thing. I like both styles. The exploration in Wario is fun like the pinpoint platforming in Mario.

>> No.7742156

Wario Land 3 is among the best GBC games up there in almost every aspect.

Nah, I could see why you would think that though.
I enjoyed trying to get as many coins as I could.

They can do that without having the player be unable to die (see Wario Land 4 / Shake It!)

it's essentially the same as losing a life

>> No.7746014

Yeah, the threat of getting a game over by losing all of your lives basically vanishes in games where you can re-enter earlier stages whenever you want. You have to be really bad and really, REALLY careless to lose all your lives.

Bringing back memories

Did anyone feel funny watching fat wario waddle around? Like that jiggling animation. Me neither, haha

Jokes aside, what's the best way to replay 3 and 4? What emulators are good nowsdays?
