Can you play Cave for just survival? Scoring looks like its too heavily based around copying a route.

Better play Platformers if you want fun survival challenge, shmups are a scoring genre primarily.

Conversely are there any platformers with good scoring? Or is scoring more of an autoscrolling thing?

For me? Has to be Espgaluda.

Yes and this applies to pretty much all arcade games.

ikeda literally said in an interview for one game, iirc it was ketsui, that the scoring system was cooked up in the last couple days before the games release, which goes to show how insignificant these things truly are

Playing for score is only meant for the top TOP end players that can beat the games without issue.
Survival play is for 99% of the playerbase. If you have to even ask, don't even bother/worry about score beyond perhaps aiming for a personal best.

>> No.7708964

you can play for score right away and get more out of the game since you're engaging with mechanics that go beyond just dodge 'n shoot, otherwise shooters feel really samey once you play a bunch for survival

Imagine playing Espgaluda for survival only. You're missing out it's one of the best scoring system ever, very flexible and satisfying.

Because getting extends often require you to learn the score mechanics, playing for score in some amount does force you to engage the game more and does matter to a point for playing for survival.
But playing PURELY for score is as mentioned by >>7708940 is really more of a thing to do after you've mastered playing for survival.
Really in the end, just play the way thats fun for you and keep trying, GO FOR THE 2-ALL
