Master System. I had a SMSII back in the day with a lot of games for it. The system is worth it for Phantasy Star alone. But it does have a solid selection of games.

In hindsight the Master System because it has an actual library. On launch I might've fallen for the Atari 7800 based on the company's image and the 2600's success only to discover that it would end up a dud that's not good for anything besides backwards compatibility ironically.

The SMS is good for series which have multiple iterations on the Genesis. Sonic has 1 and 2 on both (different games but same title) and they are kind of redundant, so getting 8bit 1 and 16bit 2 is natural and feels like a good upgrade. Golden Axe Warrior is an ok zelda clone, so you can get that plus Golden Axe 1 on 8bit and GA 2 on 16bit. This kind of thinking is how you build a solid multiplat sega library.
