Abandoned arcades and /vr/ gore thread

>> No.7702663

I'm getting a Sega Naomi machine tomorrow.
The tube was taken out (good luck finding a decent 24" tube).
What are the first things I should to a (Sega) cab?

That's practically what happens, arcade collectors will search for past arcade owners and ask if they're willing to part with their machines. They're not easy to sell off if you want to make money on them, so liquidation is often the result due to the owners either running out of space or becoming desperate to sell.

I just found the pictures, but that one is from inside a beached ship called The Duke of Lancaster. It was going to be a tourist attraction, and while it operated for a bit it eventually closed because of poor access for emergency services iirc. It's still there, and will likely be converted into an open air street art exhibition venue, pic related. Here's a video taken of the machines inside the ship https://youtu.be/ZcyevQFzFWk

Cool pics.
I remember reading an article a few years back about some old ship that was permanently docked somewhere in Britain and was used as an arcade but eventually shut down and all the pinball machines and arcade cabs were left there to rot.
Some dudes went in there and took some cool pics.

What is it about antique electronics that makes me feel they need to be saved?

They're much harder to maintain than an old car due to the use of ICs.

>> No.7712183

>>7712119
Something about how the parts they're made of being completely unique to the era. So many cars are made of basically the same thing, lots of old cars could have their engine replaced with something modern. But those old electronics will never be fully safe, so you should preserve as many as possible. They'll all die eventually anyway, but if you're skilled with a soldering iron you can potentially fix it up provided you have replacement parts

I saw a video where someone fixed an N64 power supply with modern capacitors and even upgraded it so it could be used in any region. But if the CPU in the console died there's no fixing that.

Because it's not worth the money. As technology changes, so do the manufacturing plants and the old machines are retired/recycled/destroyed so even if it's replicable, there's no one with the money or the interest to replicate the tech because there's no breaking even economically.

Yeah economics of scale is a huge thing. To put things in perspective if you commissioned the production of a single all new 1972 Honda Civic it would cost you millions of dollars. Any factory capable of making that stuff is also capable of making other stuff and you're stuck paying for all the time the factory loses not making whatever they're currently making. There are plenty of obscenely expensive sports cars out there with a material cost not much different than a consumer vehicle. They're only expensive because they were a limited production run.

Back in the day those 4kb chips were being produced by the million for many years so it was really cheap. Now only making a single batch to replace a small number of arcade machines? Suddenly its an expensive limited run luxury product.

Do any of you spergs get out or live near a populated city?
There's arcades were I live, nowhere near as many as in the 80s or 90s but they still exist. They've evolved to be mostly redemption type shit or larger machines that home consoles can't replicate. And amidst all the new fangled gimmickry there's usually a pinball table or two, a fighting cab or some throw-back machine that harks back to the old school arcade. They still have large cabinet sit-down race games and skeeball and hoop throws and all that shit though. Just a bit more modern.

That's not retro. And most of them are "UFO Catcher" games now. Or sudo-gambling machines that cough out tickets or coins.

Arcades were briefly banned in the 80s in singapoor.

fpgas have been a boon for this type of shit.
no, not mister shit or whatever that is. Look up c64 fpga video enhancer. There's an amiga one too that allows an A2000 to play aga games. Finally there's light at the end of the tunnel for custom chips if you're willing to buy a moderately expensive off the shelf board and do it yourself or pay someone else to do it. You could argue that there's no point if you're not using the original, but like all the other car analogies in this thread, it just become unreasonable to use all original parts and you have to keep the spirit of the item alive. No one is using rubber from 50s to repair old things.

Skee ball, air hockey, pinball and hoop throw games are pretty much the fucking same as they were 30 years ago you dumb cunt, just with prettier lights and newer scoring mechanisms.
Arcades aren't completely dead so stop being a faggot, they might be filled with redemption and dance machines but the aforementioned "retro" games are usually there as well. There's still bowling alleys that have old arcade cabs lying around too. And there's some barcades like this guy posted >>7724316 floating around. There's a music n pizza bar in my city that has a wall of music themed pins like Kiss, Metallica, The Stones, Gn'R etcetera that is a blast to go to.

Yeah its happening already. Some hardware will be more resilient than others but eventually they'll all die, and sure we'll all be dead once that happens but you have no guarantee it won't be your machine that lasts the longest. Also all the CRTs from those arcade machines WILL die in your lifetime as CRTs naturally do.
