Concerning the Wizardry games, which way is the best way to play the first five games? Emulating the playstation version? Playing the dos versions? Do any versions have any extra content or adds or removes things?

>> No.7690783

The ps1 version is very good and faithful to the original game.

>> No.7690827

snes versions on emualtor or everdrive (you must patch your roms to english)
(the 1 + 2 + 3 are in a single rom), and i think you could play up to the 6th episode on snes

What If I just wanted to "get" what the franchise is about, which, say, 2 games should I play?

It supports the keyboard to type spells?

1,2, and 3 are so similar they’re almost expansion packs. Skip 4 unless you get so obsessed with the mechanics that you want to play a masochistic hard mode that intentionally breaks most of the mechanics.

Or play wiz 1, bard’s tale, and might & magic if you want a survey of the dos dungeon crawlers.

1 and 6 (or 7).

SNES versions are solid.

>>7692950
1 and 6 are basically the defining games in the series. (8 is the best though by far.)

Llygamyn SNES or PS1 version for the first few. It's the same game with more QoL.
If you know japanese then PC Engine version of 4. It's not as retardedly designed.
Don't actually remember Wiz 5's best version so can't comment on that.
6, 7 (avoid Gold, it's busted) and 8 PC version. Use wiz8fast at the very least for Wiz 8.

Go for the Japanese computer ports if you want the original experience.
PC98 for 1-4 and FM Towns for 5. You can even transfer the characters between them.

>>7692950
Wizardry 5. It's right between 1-3 and 6-8.

Why not go for the original games if he want the original experience?

Because the Apple II isn't that great of a platform.
There's not reason to subject yourself to lower resolution and worse colors.
The FM Towns even has music and sound.

Unironically the SNES Versions.

So you get the extra dose of NoA censorship? The SFC version is playable in English without that shit.

I can't stand playing those games with a controller and screw trying to hunt down and use obscure Japanese only releases. Just play the Apple II version.

Whatever you do, don't play the DOS version. It has a bug where your attributes are almost as likely to decrease as they are to increase when you level up. This means that if you want any of the late game classes you'll have to be lucky enough to roll the right stats right out of the gate. This will probably take many hours of re rolling.

The SNES version has the order of the games switched around iirc. NES has some weird problem too.

As for graphics and sound? Who gives a shit. Replacing wire-frame with the same shitty low res texture over and over again doesn't make much difference. I actually found the minimalism to be charming. It encouraged me to "use my imagination". For me, drawing your own map is part of the experience too. You can also just put on whatever music you like in the background.

Where's the problem?

Emulating PC98 is the same as emulating Apple II: You insert the floppy images into the drives and reset.

But that is not the original experience anymore, just the closest to it.

I want to give a shout-out to Elminage Original on PSP and Steam, really enjoyed it.

You can turn it off if you want to listen to something else.
