Why is this game so fucking hardcore? On easiest difficulty, on the very first level there is a monster (green guy with knife) that can kill you with one barrage. One barrage. Every other guy hitscan you, and god helps you if you will be in a view of many of those guys for too long. Boss kills you in 1 hit too. Yes, there is a boss on level 1, I haven't played an oldschool shooter that would have that. Puzzles are really hard for a cheesy game: Hexen beats that, but that was first level, maybe there's more to come. On harder difficulties there are some monsters that look like shadows. They just blind you on attack, and then you just die, because you can't see shit.
I have to finish this game.

I don't understand why so many of you suck at this game. I think the reason is probably that you haven't played Duke3D enough. In Duke3D it's very easy to learn the patterns of enemies and the best ways to counter them. Here's a handy hint for newer players; the Grenade Launcher does a shitton of damage, including you. If you see an enemy in a room, run back out and saturate the area with grenades. You'll know if it's dead if you hear a squish (and I swear they coded it so that Lo Wang is more likely to taunt in these circumstances as well)

I never really played the full Shadow Warrior, first impresions are... not that great.

Even on normal difficulty, the enemies are MASSIVE bullet sponges (they take multiple explosives), and the most common enmies barely flinch, have no wind up and fire hitscan projecticles, a huge no-no for this style of FPS, or indeed, any game. Most weapons have ammo that is far too scarce to use regularly.

Duke 3D (which I still love) made it more than possible to avoid taking damage in most instance, enemies died, or at least flinched, when you shot them and ammo was plentiful.

I really ought to get around to Blood.

Bullet sponges? Not unless you're trying to kill everything with shurikens. No, you gotta run in with sword, or conserve riot gun or uzi ammo. Those two are the work horse guns in the game. Also use your grenade launcher wisely.

The hitscan ninjas are a piece of cake, you just need to proceed carefully enough to have cover to retreat to.

This, pretty much. Running in and out of cover with the katana and taking out the weak ninjas is glorious.

>> No.748851

That's the thing, it takes a direct hit with the grenade launch to take them out, and they are the only enemy (short of suiciders) that dies to a direct hit. Uzi or riot gun takes forever.

As others pointed out, SW enemies aren't really bullet sponges. If you use the wrong weapons on them then some do, like Rippers.

Also if you think SW is full of bullet sponges, then you're just going to love Blood.

>the enemies are MASSIVE bullet sponges

Can't say I agree. Most enemies die in 1-3 sword swings, 1-2 seconds of Uzi firing, 1-5 Riot Gun shots, or a single Rocket/Grenade Launcher shot.

>(they take multiple explosives)
One thing to keep in mind is that the Rocket Launcher produces almost no splash damage. It's either a direct hit or bust; which one shots every enemy except Red/Shadow Ninjas, Rippers, and Guardians.

>Most weapons have ammo that is far too scarce to use regularly

This I can say for a fact isn't correct. While the Uzi does chew through ammo, ammo for it and every weapon is extremely plentiful, except for the Guardian Head and Ripper Heart (for good reason too).

How far into the game are you?

Having just played Duke and Blood, Shadow Warrior controls like total shit. Why is this?

And it also has that gameplay element I hate where it makes you unable to not take damage. If I'm shooting at someone, they have so much health that I lose most of my health while they're returning fire. Atleast in Duke and Blood you can kill hitscan enemies quickly or stun them with attacks

I could be mistaken, but I think the Uzi fires both hitscan bullets + projectile bullets. That would explain the inconsistent damage it seems to do.

If you watch the guns while you fire, you can see those big yellow bolts shooting out of it, which travel through the game world instead of instantly striking wherever you are firing.

It had an insanely hectic development (started literally a year before they were even thinking of the initial concepts of lameduke) and went through like 4 revisions (and 3 versions of the BUILD engine) over the course of its development

Oh and when they finally had their minds set on what the game was going to be like it was rushed all to hell and pretty much completed within like 3/4 of a year or so

They just really didn't take the time to gauge and test everything to its fullest extent, and it really shows; buts its still an okay game

one of my favorite images was this one, I mean just looks so damn out there in comparison to how the final game came out

But alas, these builds and maps are most likely lost to the ages, or in Joe Sieglers Betas/alphas folder (and we'll probably never see them because Joe hasn't really ever released anything but a couple snapshots of these folders)

There was also a beta build leaked for the game, but its pretty much identical to the final product aside from some minor weapon issues, and map setups

Found a comparison image on someone's Deviantart. Here's what he says about it:

Many might remember that in the 4th level of Shadow Warrior it was possible to find Lara Croft in some hidden dungeon ("It seems she raided her last tomb!", is what Lo Wang would say when finding her), what many don't know is the fact this cameo suffered several modifications during the development process, making her look more anime-like in the earliest Shareware versions, and looking more pre-rendered 3D in the last Shareware and Full versions. The images with pink background were extracted directly from the game tiles, while the other image is an in-game screenshot.
