Is there anything wrong with All-Stars or is it a good way to play the first three games? The changes are purely visual right?

All Stars isn't a perfect port. Might as well play Mario Maker remade Mario 3 levels.

So there’s physics/gameplay changes?

>> No.7361027

some of the physics are a little different but for a kid who didn't own an nes it was a nice way to play the classics, and the lost levels. plus it was a great value, especially the one with smw on it. i still get the game selection music stuck in my head sometimes.

camera is broken in mario 3

art and sound is downgraded in all 4 games

I grew up with all these games and I never noticed any subtle differences, BUT on the other hand I also didn't play any All-Stars versions in depth except Lost Levels. Regardless, I'm sure they're all fine. I mean you're better off with the originals, but if you get stranded somewhere with nothing but an actual SNES and an All-Stars cartridge then yeah play these. Or if you're a person with impaired taste who prefers the new graphics and sound, then you could choose All-Stars for that reason, although it might still be better to stick with the originals in an attempt (probably futile) to break yourself of your bad habits in art appreciation.

Mario 1/Lost levels has different physics, it'd kind of annoying but you can get used to it

>> No.7361130

I like the original graphics/sound better, but other than that SMBUSA and SMB3 are fine. SMB and SMB2 are a little screwed up (mario's physics around bricks is different)

>> No.7361160

I'll give you a straight answer since this game gets memed a lot here and other anons will fuck with you for asking about it.

In Mario 1 and Lost Levels, in the originals if you hit your head on a brick and kept moving you'd keep your momentum. In the All Star versions, you lose all your speed when you hit a block.

I think there's something slightly different about the camera in Mario 3 but I dont remember what.

Far as I know those are the only differences in gameplay.

They are very slightly worse but, you know about the changes now, you can decide for yourself if these are a big deal or trivial bullshit that doesn't matter.

The real reason I'd recommend playing the originals is because they have better sound and visuals but this is obviously subjective. I mean the allstars is 'technically' supposed to be better because it's more detailed but I think allstars looks fuck ugly and makes the ost sound like shitty circus music instead of cool jams.

Allstar lets you save instead of start over each time you play, but as weird as it sounds the games were made without saving in mind and you'll appreciate them far more if you play them without saving. They're sort of inbetween the console experience and arcade experience, they aren't just "one and done" type games.

Have fun anon, hope you enjoy them.

only argument against them is pure autism, and if you have the cart with SMW included then all the merrier, probably the most complete package you could ever ask for in that gen.

Madness and 3 are fine versions, though they definitely are better games in their original incarnations. 1 and Lost Levels are unplayable to me in All Stars. The floaty physics feel horrible.

I could've sworn there was something off about the physics besides just the brick thing.

Definitive version of Mario 2 and 3.

SMB1 and Lost Levels are okay if you play the fan fixed version but it looks like shit thanks to removing the brick floors and having Mario and the item's sprites clash with everything else in the game thanks to the black outlines.

People on this board regularly use graphics as a primary consideration when discussing the best version of a game to play. The NEW BAD OLD GOOD is rarely applied versions of a game that are one console generation apart. Its not like PS1 Spyro vs PS4 Spyro for most cases

I see this a lot with them proclaiming PC versions being the best outing themselves as never playing either version.
>The NEW BAD OLD GOOD is rarely applied versions of a game that are one console generation apart.
It should be when gameplay is compromised. NES Marios, Megamans, Battletoads are superior to all their Genesis/SNES ports.

that said, i like the original sound and visuals better, so i would still go with the nes or fds versions.

Since nobody here wanted to be helpful OP, search for the romhack called "Super Mario All-Stars+Super Mario World Redux". One of the versions of this patch comes with the SMB1+LL brick physics fix to make it perfectly in line with the original, makes sure the overalls are the right color across the games, and then also has its normal Bowser, Yoshi and SMB3 palette fixes.

THAT is the definitive best version of the game, which fixes everything wrong with it besides some cosmetic stage background choices that we disagree with.

I love it because it's just a different look at the worlds you've already seen.
I played a shitload of 1, 2, and 3 on the NES and I loved all the extra background details in All-Stars, as well as the remixed tunes.
