Paper is a thin sheet material produced by mechanically and/or chemically processing cellulose fibres derived from wood, rags, grasses or other vegetable sources in water, draining the water through fine mesh leaving the fibre evenly distributed on the surface, followed by pressing and drying. Although paper was originally made in single sheets by hand, almost all is now made on large machines—some making reels 10 metres wide, running at 2,000 metres per minute and up to 600,000 tonnes a year. It is a versatile material with many uses, including printing, packaging, decorating, writing, cleaning, filter paper, wallpaper, book endpaper, conservation paper, laminated worktops, toilet tissue, currency and security paper and a number of industrial and construction processes.

Because Tetris is extremely good, and wasn't really tied down to any childish mascot or branding, so adults felt less hesitation to give it a go. It was also already a huge thing on home computers, people were playing it in the workplace long before it was ever on Gameboy, you could easily sell the Gameboy and its port to that crowd.

If you had old gamepro magazines from the era era ans other print media it was hyped for like a month.

It was most likely featured in populer mechanics too.

Pretty amazing video. Not surprised that someone would still have a prototype somewhere, also not surprised that Nintendo has one archived. Nintendo archives everything, which is why the gigaleak is happening. So, it is actually amazing that a copy of the workboy software gets leaked a few weeks after discovering that the rare prototype he received needed a cartridge. Amazing timing. I thought it was a good video, and you even showed off some of the features running on the machine. Cool that Frank leant this out. It was sitting on his bookshelf for decades. I hope this will get into the hands of someone like Ben Heck, so we can see a tear down. It sounds like neat hardware for what it was. The Sharp CPU is a Z80 and 6502 hybrid, it can do decent graphics and sound. GameBoys's cost less than $100.00 where I live. How much were they planning on selling this device?

>How much were they planning on selling this device?

Skip some of the video?
Part of the video explains they were just about to release it for $89.99 and then nintendo cut the cost of the gameboy to that same price, so they cancelled the production in fear or it being too pricey

>> No.7230415

>>7227939
>Because Tetris is extremely good,

Tetris was the initial reason why the GameBoy was insanely popular when it launched. Tetris was the original pack-in game. People bought GameBoy's just for Tetris, and not talking about just kids. Nintendo basically wrecked Tengen to get this exclusive for their hamdheld, and it did lead to the popularity of puzzle type games on hand held systems. Sega had Columns on the Gamegear, Atari had Klax on the Lynx.
But in the middle years, the GameBoy was purely a shovelware/ licensed property machine. This was when Nintendo were selling the "Play it Loud" Game Boy series that were like $59.99. Then Pokemon came out at the end of the GameBoy's life and cause a resurgence in the handhelds life. But this time, it was mostly kids, because GameBoys were like less than $50.00. Nintendo basically released the GameBoy Color as a way to capitalize on Pokemon's success and keep the GameBoy line going (through BC) until Project Atlantis/ The GBA arrived.

Amazing that this thing was found/shown. Glad it went to someone with at least some ethics. not ethot.

Is there anything that we'd miss by not cracking it open? GB dev seems pretty advanced, is the tech/know-how already available on how to make one of these from scratch if someone wanted to?

Forget returning it, the bigger achievement would be getting the engineer paired up with a GB software/emulation expert (say, shonumi) and working on replicating this hardware and the software that it uses to interface. If that happens then we could replicate not only our own GB keyboard, but more importantly, the possibility of using a KB for homebrew or something else.

>> No.7238037

>>7237970
Right? He doesn't know that the Gameboy was one of the greatest successes in the history of the industry, what was it now, 115+ Million systems sold, and god knows how many software sales to go with that?

It's so very funny to me that he's mystified by how Tetris, one of the most timeless games ever, which can easily appeal to children as well as adults (to the point that countless adults got in trouble at the office for playing Tetris at their computers when they were supposed to be working), sold a lot via a readily available and easily portable system that was cheap.

>>7237978
That'd be really cool, just imagine some slightly modernized derivative of the keyboard using a bunch of easily available off the shelf parts, and maybe the outward shell of the thing could be 3D printed, it'd be a cool DIY kit for homebrewers.
