Why did the devs not care to make a competent port for the NES?

That's not that bad for a bad port.

>> No.7183784

It's rather playable, despite the weird control scheme — but it's pre Super Mario Bros., so you can't really fault them. The PC-Engine version is a lot prettier, but I think the early NAMCOT Famicom titles have a lot of charm.

>The PC-Engine version is a lot prettier, but I think the early NAMCOT
this.
Also what's up with Namco's name? Is it Namcot in Japan and other places and not America, is that it?

>it's pre Super Mario Bros.
Impressive.

Namcot was the division that ported the arcade games to home consoles

>> No.7183867

>>7183857
Then why do the boxes and title screens for the games say "Namco" for releases like Namco Museum for the Gamecube?

Oops I was a little mixed up; Pac-Land hit arcades in 1984, a year before SMB released. It released on Famicom two months after SMB, but obviously NAMCO couldn't have known about it at that point. Kind of wild how much SMB really codified about the then emerging genre.

It's cool, I know what you meant.

It had better controls, or easier controls. Don't get me wrong, Pac-Land is an awesome and underrated classic, but its controls are tough for most people and I'm sure that factored in it being largely forgotten.
Not me, though. My local neighborhood (back then ) burger joint had a small arcade and it had both Vs. Super Mario Bros. and Pac-Land, as well as others, so it's always been on of my favorites. Hard as fuck, though, but very doable as compared to monsters like Ghosts N' Goblins (arcade).

because its emulating the arcade games obviously
and if you mean on the box, "NAMCOT" had went unused for a decade by that point

its true retard, home console ports in japan used the NAMCOT brand, but they stopped doing it (and never didi it otuside of japan) because it was retarded as fuck.
Galaga (Arcade) -> Namco
Galaga (Famicom) -> Namcot
Galaga (NES) -> Namco
and so on for other games

This is OP finally checking back on the thread. I didn't know that Namco beat Nintendo to the punch when it came to a sidescroller, even more so with an arcade port. Thank you!

This game had more complicated backgrounds unlike SMB1, maybe that's what they put more effort into
