I'm not sure if it's an acquired taste, or just 90s nostalgia. As another example, I hated the Backstreet Boys when I was in middle school, but if they come on when I'm at work I jam.

Part of the Backstreet Boys (and boy band in general) hate that I had back then was due to the fact that all of the girls at school had crushes on them, and didn't pay any attention to me or my friends as a result. Same thing with Leonardo DiCaprio when Titanic released. Everyone in my class decided to see it on the same night, seeing Kate Winslet's tits on the big screen as a 12 year old was pretty amazing.

I know everyone shits all over Sonic Adventure for being the game that started the whole "you play as Sonic's FRIENDS" trend, but I enjoyed it. The Sonic levels were the best, yeah, but it was nice getting a change of pace and a different gameplay style. I even enjoyed Big's levels.

Some people see those levels as a component of the game, but some people see them as nothing more than an impediment to playing as Sonic. I can see both sides.

This is so gay. Classic Sonic is far from the perfect character design. The quills and legs are way too short, which is why Toei and Pierrot lengthened them for their animation projects (see pic related). The Modern design conveys motion leagues better and allows for more dynamic poses.

Adventure 1 worked because you could choose who to play as. You could get all of Sonic's campaign done if he was the only character you liked, and if you didn't like a character you could hold them off until the very end or just not bother using them at all. You wouldn't get the true ending by skipping a character, but that's not terribly different from missing out on the emerald endings in the Genesis games if you think about it.
Adventure 2, while I like the game, the Hero/Dark split really shit the bed. You were just strung along and had to juggle different characters instead of just focusing on the one you liked. If you liked Sonic's gameplay, the Dark story is basically pure hell because Shadow only has four levels aside from a boss or two; the smallest amount in the whole game.
They never really used Adventure 1's style again, which is a damn shame. Heroes having you switch characters mid-stage and locking them into formations, and the clusterfuck of Sonic 06 is what gave all the different characters such a terrible reputation. Their attempt to "fix" the problem by only letting you play as Sonic in later games completely missed the point, with Unleashed having the werehog gimmick at night, or having to play as Classic and Modern Sonic.
