I have many GBs, but for GBC, I have my original atomic purple, pink (great color and condition), blue (regrettably has a bad screen bezel), two of the Gold/Silver Pikachu/Pichu models (neither of which are in great shape), and my favorite one by far, the yellow/blue mix Pokemon RBY model, which is in great shape.

All that said, I've been playing DMG almost exclusively recently, ever since someone told me that they thought the screen was unusable. I am determined to see if I agree or disagree. I haven't used a DMG in decades, but it isn't really that bad, unless the game has a lot of fast-moving objects. Super RC Pro-Am doesn't give a fuck about DMG and you can tell. Other games, however, play fine on it, including (but not limited to) Tetris, Cyraid, Extra Bases, FF Legend 2, NBA Jam, Hyper Lode Runner, and Game & Watch Gallery.

The GB is in my top 5 favorite systems along with the NES/FC. It along with saturn, dreamcast, and PS1 have formed the bulk of my recent gaming, aside from oculus quest. I'm glad I challenged myself to play more GB, the system has way more good games than people tend to recognize.

I won't tell you what to do, but it is my suggestion that you get something else if the alternative means playing GB on this device. It doesn't have that great of a screen, and more importantly, it doesn't even display the correct aspect ratio.

I strongly recommend this alternative as a "modern" GBC: buy a nintendo DSi (especially an XL if you can find it) and install CFW on it (very easy to do). There is a very competent GB emulator for it that is quite capable, even to the point of showing super game boy borders for compatible games. I think that you'd get more out of that than a GB Boy Color.

Yeah, PS1 and GB are great consoles. I don't have the DMG, and I can't recall ever playing it, maybe once as an anklebiter.
I prefer the form factor of the DMG and GBC are great and I prefer them over the GBA/SP.

I have waaay too many GBA games. If you live in Australia or NZ I recommend FullyRetro. Every single game I've ordered from them has been genuine (and there's been a lot). Been playing Pokémon Clover, the original Tetris or Solar Strike, all using an EZ Flash Omega on my 001 Tribal that I got as a kid when I go to the toilet.
Waiting for a 900mah battery and a makho pcb.
For some time I wanted a 101, but learnt about the screen tearing. An IPS is stupid because I could just use my phone with a gamepad.
I have 2 GBC, one of them being the purple from childhood and the other blue, but they're back in Portugal. I'll bring them once I go on holidays. I'd like to get a DMG, Pocket, Light and Mini, but prices are stupidly high. Waiting on Lockdown V2 to end to start going to boot sales, since you can sometimes get deals as cheap as £2.

For the past decade, ever since I realized that Pokemon Stadium and Stadium 2 both recognize Green with a bunch of Gen I Pokemon Nuzlocke runs, I've wanted to get a bootleg/reproduction copy of Green to use with Pokemon Stadium, but I never actually got around to doing it. Mainly because I'm not sure what I'd want out of it. A stock "Green" would just be identical to Blue but with a different Cerulean Cave, but changing the encounter tables to be JP Blue's wouldn't feel right either.

I'm also not sure how the Game Boy Tower would react, though I'm sure it wouldn't be too off.

Also, for what it's worth, there exist backlight and even IPS screen mods for pretty much all GB models. Playing on those or a model AGS-101 GBASP looks much better than 3DS (and technically performs better too but you probably won't notice), although these options can get pretty expensive.

I should have mentioned I was talking about VC injects. For emulators like Gameyob, the lower resolution of the DS makes it a far superior experience, particularly the XL as you've said. I'd also recommend keeping scaling off as integer scaling isn't possible.

I think it was the select button that you hold when launching the game that makes it play at native resolution.
Screen tearing is an issue though, so either the GBC with original screen or the SP 001 are the best options.

I'm not sure what high quality means, but I've used rechargeable and regular 1.5v alkaline batteries. Same result.
The screen just starts to fade when the game starts, but the sound keeps going. After that it gets kind of glitchy for a few seconds. It's a chink clone, and I feel like I might be damaging it so I stopped trying. It seems like a power issue, unfortunely I don't have one of those AC Adapter to try.

I have double consoles because half were my brother's, I'm holding off on getting a flashcard because I don't have a backlit gbc so I'm emulating on my psvita for now, alsp they weren't really kept that well. I bought a replacement screen for the gbc in Japan as well as pokemon green, still in their case in a box somewhere, I wouldn't play physical games because the battery save is a pain.

Any idea where to get a gbc backlight kit in Europe? Or even a backlit gbc for cheap enough

The Lime Green Gameboy looks fucking delicious. I have a Fuchsia GBC, Yellow GBC, Yellow custom backlit GBA and a Black GBP. The gameboy line is peak aesthetics with just about everything. The gameboy/gameboy advance game boxes are my favourite out of any of the game cases. They were always packed to the brim with goodies.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but /mu/ is tranny infested garbage anymore, so I'll ask it here. I have a Game Boy Pocket and a Game Boy Color and I use an LSDJ cart to create chiptune. When I use the headphone jack on either of them, I get this low-volume, but noticeable high pitch whine that can even be heard through the GBC's speaker if I take the headphones out. I've picked up a Pokemon Red cart and I've been so paranoid about it since it's so clean. It has a little wear on it, but compared to some of the other pokemon games I got it's clean as a whistle. But now that I have one with a clean sticker it makes me want to replace the damaged ones. Do you guys know any good places to get replacement labels?

Speakers don't last forever, and the speakers in handheld consoles not only get put into tougher environments than your average house speaker, but are also much cheaper and less quality. Their expected lifespan is 10-20 years. The constant stream of sweat from your grimy hands don't help them live any longer.

I'm not a fan of those mods desu, if you want a raspberry pi portable or similar emulator handheld there are better options in form factor and comfort. Also the new button/holes always look a bit janky or weird outside of marketing pictures imo

The reason I modded my gbc even thought I have a gba is because I like the gbc form factor more, I dislike the way gb cartridge stick out on gba and I enjoy modding old consoles. From a value perspective it makes 0 sense
