To make things more interesting you must rate each game on its graphics, sound, control, fun factor, and challenge using the gamepro ratings system :^)

>Graphics
RoS - 4.0
S3 - 4.5
For an early MG game, RoS looked great S3 has advantage being released 4 years later
>Sound
RoS - 4.0
S3 - 4.5
Used to prefer RoS but over time S3 soundtrack trumps it
>Control
RoS - 3.5
S3 - 4.5
That one jump on the water stage in RoS is a run killer. Never played S3 with 6 buttons but 3 button is still very good
>Fun Factor
RoS - 3.5
S3 - 4.5
RoS does feel a little archaic compared to its sequel
>Challenge
RoS - 4.0
S3 - 3.0
No surprise here. S3 is recognised as the easier game.

I have far more nostalgia for Revenge of Shinobi as I never had Shinobi 3 growing up but have to admit that Shinobi 3 is the better game in most aspects, even in the music department but that's subjective really.

iMo S3 had better tunes but it also had a couple stinkers(the wharf stage with all the pipes and that factory one before you fight Mecha Godzilla) while I can't think of any bad songs from RoS. For having an overall better ost I would give the nod to Revenge.

Definitely give the 6 button layout a try. It makes an already decently easy game piss simple but it is alot of fun. Makes me wonder if that was the control scheme they orginally wanted but realized it broke the game.

>> No.7130970

Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, and MD Shadow Dancer are the only good games in the series.

Fuck the Super Shinobi games, casualised garbage just like Super Castlevania Bore.

Revenge of Shinobi was more challenging and felt longer. Shinobi 3 was more polished. Have to go with RoS even though I thoroughly enjoyed 3.

Both are great, but I like Revenge much more. Replayed both, recently. They hold up.
I’ve been replaying the first one on the PS2, currently. That one’s my favorite.

Revenge. Shinobi 3 is great, but its reduced difficultly feels like a lack of refinement than a deliberate design choice, especially considering they had to redesign the whole game last minute.

I'll post the code as well:
"This cheat makes it possible to play the game with a new 6 Button controller scheme. You need a 6 button controller plugged into port 1 and any regular controller in port 2. Highlight "Options" on the main menu. Normally when you're in the Options menu, it says "Options" at the top, with an S on the end. Highlight Options but don't go into it yet. On Controller 1, hold the Mode button and on Controller 2, hold UP on the D-Pad and the C Button. With all these buttons held down, press Start on controller 1. Now you're in the Options menu, it now just says "Option" at the top without an S. This means 6 Button mode is on. This is what each button does. A is the Block button. B is a Melee attack. C is Jump X uses Ninjitsu magic Y and Z throw Shurikens This allows you to use Melee move at any time rather than at close range or when out of Shurikens"

>> No.7131898

Block is already broken, it's super broken with a dedicated button.

Shinobi 3 just has too many boring parts, if the whole game were like the last level maybe it would be the best. S3 is random "cool" stuff, RoS plays like they actually thought about game design.

>> No.7132798

S3 difficulty felt just right for me when I was growing up. I remember game overing many times on the falling rocks level and the act 2 of the last level. As of now though yeah, it is pretty easy. I wish there was a hard mode hack for it.

Revenge: 4

Revenge looks nice, 3 is fucking kino

>Sound
Revenge: 3.5
S3: 3

Both a little bland although perfectly adequate, 3's music was a little more memorable for me

control
Revenge: 3.5
S3: 5

Double-jumping in Revenge wasn't broken but it was pretty fucking twitchy for such a necessary mechanic, 3 is smooth as fuck

>fun factor
Revenge: 3
S3: 5

At some point Revenge just becomes dickish. with its difficulty. Constant pitfall deaths, limited continues, final level is a literal fucking maze that's just plain exhausting if you try to play it straight without a guide and the last boss isn't just hard to beat on his own but has a separate timed element you have to deal with if you don't want the shitty ending. By the end it's just kicking you in the balls. And yeah, I know you're supposed to replay it a million times to git gud but I don't want to have to replay the entire game just to get few practice rounds in on the later stages. 3 is just right.

challenge
Revenge: 5
3: 3.5

Well, like I said, Revenge is a ballbreaker and 3 is actually beatable.

>Overall
Revenge: 3.5
S3: 5

If Revenge was just a little less severe I'd enjoy it way more because I like so much about it, but 3 is basically all the good shit from revenge without the punishing difficulty. 3 looks better, 3 is more fun, 3 doesn't require a level of autistic devotion just to beat it. 3 is the better game.

Shinobi 3 is the best
Yes it's much easier and yes you can 'muh dive kick' through it, that's on you if you want to choose to ruin the game, it's not the games fault if you don't play it properly, but if you do it's objectively a more fun game than the others

>> No.7135262

>>7130667
This is a very tough call because both games kick all sorts of ass. I think Shinobi 3 has a slight edge in objective quality, but Revenge will always be more nostalgic and has a tad more, dare I say, soul.

The "dive kick to beat the game" is a forced meme. Not very hard of a game, true, but without run-slashing invincibility and obviously without mastering the double jump, you're toast. That and dive kicking won't help you with many bosses at all.

>> No.7135572

>>7134992
Revenge is at least a 4/5. You bitch a lot about its difficulty but you can farm lives on the airplane level. Solid analysis on most other points. PS video games are ludo, not kino

I personally prefer 3 between those two, but my favorite is Shinobi on PS2.

>> No.7135701

Dunno about Revenge but Shinobi 3 does something I really appreciate, contact damage with enemies don't actually hurt you, it just knocks you back. However, if the enemy did a melee attack you'd take damage. I wish more games did that.

>> No.7135821

>>7134765

You can pulverize the bosses in seconds with magic anyway, you don't need dive kick for that.

Dive kick is broken, blocking is broken, magic is broken, you end up with 100+ shurikens after one level even if you set it to zero in the options. S3 is best for playing over a weekend and forgetting it, RoS is better for replaying.

>> No.7136395

Can't remember having too many issues on the laser level but it's been a few years. The maze is kinda frustrating nut doable. RoS biggest sin is that damn jump in that harbor stage. You need to be perfect. It's is the whole reason I farm lives on that factory stage.
