The Lain game was made before the show. If anything, the show is the tie in to the game, but the idea was that each were essentially two sides of a coin: two different universes telling two different stories but using the same character and certain plot/setting elements. Thus, the "Serial Experiments" name - it was intended to be an experiment in serialization.
