It seemed like they all became action shlock like Dead Space or first person cringe like Amnesia

Where's the sense of foreboding?

>> No.7003817

LCDs meant that the traditional style of dark environments no longer worked, and the horror of seeing something twitching in the corner of a screen is vastly diminished when you have perfect washed out clarity of it to begin with.

It's the same reason why horror died with the switch to DVD. What you can't really see is much more horrifying than what you can, especially when it's blatant CG or a shitty stop motion effect.

The game does have bugs, but it's still scary. It's mostly because of the resource management, the environments, and how the enemies beat you to shit in like 2 hits. The puzzles are also pretty fun.
I actually think some FPS horrror games ly Amnesia: TDD, Cry of Fear, and Outlast 1 can be scarier than the PS1 RE games, just because of the darker environments, the enemy designs and how defenseless they make you feel.

Here is what happened: people were sick of tank controls, calling any game using them during the PS2/GC era "dated".

So, the next gen made perfectly fine survival horror games without tank controls, such as Silent Hill Homecoming.

However, without the tank controls, people also complained, thinking that "tank controls" WAS the definition of 3rd person survival horror, completely disregarding all the other design elements.

So where does that leave you? First person games.

First person survival horror have ALWAYS existed and coexisted side by side with the 3rd person ones (tank controls or not), but when a gap was left by what I just explained, interest in them peaked; and games like Amnesia came out at the perfect time for that.

I fucking love Siren and I appreciate all of the quality of life improvments that came with Siren 2, such as crouch walking, but I largely prefer the first game. For some reason I can't click with the majority of the cast from 2 except for the police officer and the two soldiers and I think the enemy designs are a lot weaker too. I really liked the bug aesthetic that some of the enemies take in the later levels in the first game. There's nothing like that in the second. I do like how they brought back Kyoya though.

I had no idea that items wouldn't be highlighted in any way, so I couldn't make any progress without finding out there were keys on the table. This is fucking retarded because people mostly saw those movies in the theater which was on giant reels the same quality or higher quality than DVDs. Movies like the Thing have special effects that are still yet to be topped to this day.

>> No.7007546

>people mostly saw those movies in the theater
Sure, in the fucking 70s. The 80s was the domain of home video, and the horror genre in particular did very well on VHS, people really don't understand that practically nobody was spending 15 bucks a week at a cinema to watch a new movie, people watched them at home thanks to rentals.

Film degrades over time, and the copy you might've seen in the theater was a 5th generation conversion. While movies like The Thing do have fantastic effects, that's because they were practical instead of CG garbage. The remake actually had some great props, they just replaced them all in post thanks to some retarded exec.

Oh you poor, ignorant soul.
There has been a new wave of "dread-ridden" horror-movies that really sweep the board in terms of doing horror right in HD.
Alone, which came out this year was fucking brilliant. A story about a woman who recently lost her husband going on a getaway who then gets stalked and kidnapped.
It Follows was dripping with atmosphere and fear. A lot of people don't really dig on this movie but if you get wrapped into the lore, it's a creepy ride.
The Babadook was an excellent essay not only on loss and stress manifesting itself as an entity in one's life, but an awesome attempt at making just pure darkness scary without showing much of anything and how our loved ones can become the monster themselves.
The VVitch was one of the best horror movies I've seen in decades, if not one of the best movies period. The way it treats witches on a fundamental and natural level makes them seem so believable as an entity that could've existed in the fundamental era of Colonial America.

>> No.7007803

It has better survival mechanics than any other SH game. Most notably how few supplies there are and how fewer you can carry on you at all times; but also how deadly enemies are as some can OHKO you; fighting them is more dangerous, dodging them is also. Another example would be how it also implemented the "walk past enemies undetected" mechanic better than its prequels.

But no, no pre-rendered cameras with tank controls, therefore people claim it's a pure action game like RE4. Superficial idiots and their meme'd opinion is what killed the genre.

Ps3 Siren haters had some really dumb takes they just regurgitated from shitty gaming journalists.
>it's episodic ewww
That's how the series has always been presented.

Well the previous ones are supposed to be like a serialized tv show. It's not a stretch to make one that feels like a mini-series. The first two aren't slow burn Ju-On shit anyway.
