Christmas Nights was cute and all but it was barely even a proof of concept for 3D Sonic.

best-case scenario it would've been a mix of simple 3D levels and complex 2D ones, with the former being split between linear 3D in the vein of crash or modern sonic and sonic jam style. I could see them introducing a new character to star in the 2D levels while marketing-wise they needed to make sonic star in the 3D ones. and it should've been called sonic 4.

I wish the Saturn had been the one console of the generation to stick with more 2D games. In my perfect world, it would have captured a market that preferred 2D and did it really, really well. The games would have continued to look great today. They could have cranked out more Sonic titles that maybe used some 2.5D stuff on occasion. It really seems like the Saturn's 3D was so disappointing (i.e. Sonic X-Treme) that they couldn't make up their mind on what to do.
