IMO, a hidden gem would be a game that isn't stupidly over rated, or gained a cult following over time.

An example would be Ridge Racer 5. It was a "meh" upon release, but it's a seriously fun game none the less. It lacks the flair, charm and sheer volume of content R4 had, but it's just as fun to play.
That's a PS2 hidden gem, IMO.

Yes. PS2 USB port transfer rate is capped at USB 1.1 speeds, so the HDD or network transfer is your best bet. Don't bother with the disk drive, since earlier models have inferior laser disks.

My brother stole mine back in the hayday just to play FF12, and it didn't work but he kept it anyway for his HDD out of convenience. Since I have no real technical know-how for converting an IDE to a SATA with the various kits or the like, I guess i'd be stuck with a dummy adapter for SATA. Even if I did get a working and converted adapter, best I could do is a LAN connection to my PC for the wi-fi net it uses, because the actual net router is on the opposite side of the house.

Apparently some games have private servers going and I would really like to enjoy something like Timesplitters online which I missed out on back in the day, maybe some good ol' Tony Hawk or an experiment with RE Outbreak, but finding a pre-modded SATA network adapter is like a needle in a haystack, and I don't want to deal with IDE prices, so dummy with a HDD's my best option.

If you have a fat just buy a network adapter that's already modded for SATA from ebay. Quick look I can find some that cost about $18 free shipping. You want the SATA conversion because you'll get like 8-12x the storage per $ compared to IDE and you definitely won't want to keep taking it out to replace the games. Keep in mind that you can get away with slower hard drives because the speed is capped. If you managed to somehow make a SSD work on it, loading won't be quicker though any hard drive backup will load faster than the laser disks. The memory cards with OPL loaded on it are like $8.

The server solution has slowdown in some games. Google it and you'll find people complaining about it. The method that anon gave for fat is the absolute best way to play on original hardware. I did it myself because it was cheaper than upgrading my toaster when I don't even use it for new releases.

The link is too big but if you go to ebay and type
>IDE SATA Network Adaptor HDD Adapter Hard Disk FOR Sony PS2 Playstation US SHIP
There's an adapter for $15 free economy shipping.

Depends on your system. For a fat like mine, about $60-70 for a dummy SATA network adapter, a SATA hard drive, and a device to hook the drive up to your PC so you can download shit onto it (plus a quick flash drive and a spare memory card) can let you install a FreeMCBoot onto the memory card and Open Loader on the hard drive, which lets you basically play every PS2 game besides very, very specific problematic ones.

It's from that brief period of havok physics penetrating games. It's all about psychic powers - starting with telekinesis, pyrokinesis, mind control, and putting them all to use to make the game absurdly over the top. From making peoples heads pop open to making them flail above their friends with telekinesis while they shoot their weapons off into any which direction.

Think that recent Remedy game, Control, but with good gameplay.

From my personal experience, it's quite easy, but you will need to spend some money.

You gonna need to install FreeMCBoot on your memory card, it's gonna turn your PS2 into a modding machine.
Here's what you need: PS2 with modchip built in (buy one online), one CD-R disc (i recommend Verbatim's discs), USB flash drive (mine have 32GB available, but you can get better one if you gonna play games off your USB drive).

1. Get image file with FMCB and uLaunchElf online, just google it
2. Burn your CD with ImgBurn (DO NOT burn discs on laptop, worst mistake of my life, if you have laptop you better burn the disc on your friend's computer)
3. Get latest daily OPL build (daily builds have many cool stuff like Popstarter PS1 emulator support) + latest FMCB build (Optional) on your USB drive.
4. Boot up the disc and Install FMCB or use uLaunchElf, insert USB drive in PS2, go to mass:/, and install FMCB from USB drive. (Make sure you have at least 3.5 MB space free on memory card)

Now you can do whatever you want. Look up for PS2 modding-related tutorials on youtube, like "how to play games with usb on PS2" or "PS2 OPL tutorial".

tl;dr just google it or get FreeDVDBoot

oh wait, you mean running games from usb using opl
yes, you will need to defragment the game files to use them
and no, it's not for performance reasons, it's for addressing reasons, just like how linux swap files need to not be fragmented, opl accesses the game data below the filesystem layer, avoiding filesystem overhead, but it can't do that if the file is in multiple pieces on difference parts of the disk, it needs the game to be one contiguous chunk (ie. not fragmented)
it doesn't matter if the disk is a hdd, dvd, ssd, whatever

The disc's for these are in very good condition, say a Pre owned on Ebay is 5 bucks, but the sealed game is like 50.
Would the games I have with nearly mirror like reflection sell for more than a common open box game, even if by a little?

>Front Mission 4-5
You can only appreciate 5 if you play/read LPs of the entire series but the series as a whole is famous for it's high quality world building and extensive, political storylines set in the perspective of soldiers and mercenaries.
>Ace Combat ps2 trilogy
The "story" is not the focus but between the in-mission radio dialog and the narration between missions are very well written. Ace Combat 4 especially, the story of Yellow 13 could have been a great movie and gets really emotional at parts for a points based, arcade dogfighting game.
>Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter
It's one of those "you're on the run" stories but what makes it stand out to me is the small scope of the world and how the gameplay ties into it. From the beginning your goal is just "reach the surface, alive" but between the permadeath, scarce resources and the pseudo death timer it really nails the stress and desperation your party endures. It's intended for multiple attempts before you win and each playthrough it will drip feed you more story from outside the main character's perspective, so each run doesn't get stale. Just don't ask Breath of Fire gatekeepers because they completely missed the point of the game and got filtered by the pseudo time limit and to this day make up bullshit about it.
>Digital Devil Saga
Most SMT games have weak stories but DDS had a lot of effort put into it, mostly since the concept came from an actual author. The story is pretty straight forward but the setting, mood and atmosphere are pretty unique. The only game I can think of comparable in tone is the first Dark Souls. The first game leaves who you are and what the world is as a mystery and instead gives you clues that everything isn't normal which makes it a bit more interesting than the sequel that explains everything.

The PS2 doesn't have easy-to-use hardware deflicker or antialiasing like the other consoles, and early on most devs couldn't figure out how to implement it properly without tanking performance, so a lot of them didn't bother at all or made only ineffective attempts. I dunno, but maybe that's just cause everyone where I lived in the states had an Xbox, Halo CE, Halo 2 when it came out, whatever the latest sports game was, and that was it. It's pretty hard to pin down, most compatibility lists available are severely outdated and you can find people playing some of the games on youtube, so maybe it was included by user error in the first place, or the issue has been fixed since then.

That's a classic 10-series model. Most fats you'll find are 30-series, where they have an expansion port in the back that you slide an adapter and HDD into. With the 10s, you had to get an external hook-up to achieve the same effect. yea, the issue is how CRTs draw their picture
to try to keep things minimal, a crt draws with a single dot moving extremely fast, so the faster your camera, the less of the screen will be lit up (this fact is how traditional light guns work)
in addition to that, most 6th gen games produce interlaced pictures, what this means is that for every 60th (50th) of a second, only half of the screen is drawn on, either odd lines or even lines
what this means for photography, is that depending on how fast your shutter is, you may see different things, for example, a shutter of 1/60 (1/50) will appear to be a whole-screen picture, but will actually only be one field (odd or even lines), so is half the intended resolution
notice how in >>6860256
the right picture (and the top of the left one) has dark horizontal lines through it, this is an indication that one of the fields is missing, and your shutter was too fast

It's good if you have other consoles that don't support RGB/component. But yeah, OSSC is clearly best if it works with your consoles.

And OSSC will be worth it even for PS2 alone.

You mean to force in 5% of games.
It doesn't work very very VERY often. If there's no progressive-scan in-game, then it's better to just don't bother.

i created my own FHDB image with everything set up as i like it.
since its a raw copy its 20gb for less than 2gb of actual data but whatever.
why winhiip lets you make a copy onto another disk but not to an ISO i really dont know.

>since its a raw copy its 20gb for less than 2gb of actual data but whatever.
Why would you even bother? To be able to install FFX-like game on HDD?
Find and drop some 160GB IDE inside and be golden.

>> No.6861274

>>6861269
not sure what you mean?
it's an image to install freemcboot onto the HDD.
i have a 500gb drive in there, i just used winhiip to clone the data to a 20gb drive i had, and then made an image of that drive.

>> No.6861304

>>6861274
>not sure what you mean?
Your wording suggested that you cloned original PS2 HDD.
The purpose of running actual PS2 HDD is for games to recognize it and be able to use it in FFXI or game-install where it supported.

But it seems you just using regular FHDB.

>> No.6861321

for it to work in the ps2 it has to be in ps2 format.
the only program that can work with that format is winhiip, but it doesn't let you create an iso, only to copy the data on one hdd to another.
so i copied it to a 20gb drive and then imaged that (giving me a 20gb image rather than a 500gb one).
now if i need to reinstall for any reason, i don't have to set everything up again.

i used this FHDB image, but it had stuff i didn't need and some stuff was missing.
i copied the image to a 500gb drive, set it all up and then realised that i wanted to make a backup.
there's no way to backup a PS2 drive without cloning the entire drive, so i had to use winhiip to copy the data to a much smaller drive.
there is no other way of making a backup other than cloning the drive because its a wierd proprietary format.

How do you go about adding more games to a PS2's hard drive? Every time I've done it I've had to completely re-do the install on the drive. It's a pain.

i use HDL game installer to add games. it uses FTP so you just use the windows client to add the games and it copies over the network.

Thank you, would you say it's reliable? I've seen trouble with FTPing to PS2 in the past. Any starting-from-zero guides out there or nah?

>> No.6861360

That's a royal pain right there.
1) You google and ftp everything through HDLGameInstaller combo. There's also HDLServer, but it's x3 slower.
2) You start HDL service in OPL and refresh your list in OPL Manager on PC.
3) You ftp new art-works and configs throught uLE on PS2 and OPL Manager on PC.

it says its compatible with dual layer games, which i think was what people had trouble with in the past. i've FTPed a dozen games and they all work fine, so no problems so far.
i'd start with this image and then add or delete any extra programs you want.

It's replacement for default PS2 browser where you check what's on your MC and start discs.

You can google it as "HDD OSD".

I don't think this is possible, you can back up saves to the HDD. Alternatively you can use uLaunchElf to back them up to USB. Additionally you can back up PS1 saves this way, or even back up PS1 saves to PS2 MC.

Can't really, because I only have 1 MC and use it with Slim.
If inserted into Phat then it overrides FHDB. And I need different configs for Phat and Slim.

it uses the native HDD utility, so yes its essentially official software.
>>6861381
i believe you can do that, yes. i would trust flash memory (e.g. memory card) over a HDD though.
if you really need the space then that's probably a better option.

personally i just think FHDB/FMCB is easier to install applications to and cleaner looking.

>> No.6861401

>>6861397
Run uLaunchElf on one of the systems, insert a USB stick, boot into it, copy the contents of the memory card onto the USB stick should take a few seconds. Then your saves are preserved and you can store them wherever you want.

I too want to trust in MC more.
But I need to use FMCB on a few different consoles so I can't install 1-console version on it. And with all-version it will continue to override FHDB.

16 GiB RAM
GTX 1080
Is minimum to run PS2 titles.

Take GoW won't run on anything less than those specs.
JRPG is fine though action scenes might lag.
And if you enable frame skipping then you could get with lower end hardware.
PS3 emulation require even more than that.
