I'm playing through the genesis library by release years, and I don't understand this complaint. 1989 alone had:
> Ghosts n Goblins
> Golden Axe for dumb multiplayer
> Fuckin Revenge of Shinobi
> Thunder Force II
> Herzog Zwei if you like strategy games
> Sword of Vermillion (technically 1991 in US)
And I've only played about half the '89 releases

If the game had actually dropped in 1989 in the West I think the Genesis would've had a much stronger start to building an RPG audience, rather than being completely overlooked on that front by most.

I heard this too but it seems like most people trace it back to an unlimit frameskip option that can be turned off as of 1.03. Not sure tho, it seems like some people are still having some input lag. I guess I'll see if I can snag a copy used for like 15, I mostly just want to play Phantasy Star anyways

I thought it had input lag at first, but now I don't think so. It's pretty awesome if you don't want to emulate. The only issue is that they have some very cringe tryhard "wow so 90s guys!" fake books on the shelf in-game and they didn't replace the Mega Drive game boxes or posters with Genesis one for the American version, which kills the nostalgia element for me a little bit.
