Treasure only really excelled at scotformers. Their shmups, run 'n guns, and fighters/bmups are laughably poor.

>comfily playing Sin and Punishment on real hardware
>experience gets even comfier when I remember that, while I'm enjoying playing the game, I know that australia-kun is 24/7 on /vr/ having Nintendo and Treasure rent free forever

I imported Sim & Punishment moments after seeing it on x-Play.
I go back to it and wonder how the hell I ever beat it. My brain doesn't work like it did back then anymore.

Isn't Castlevania IV technically a Treasure game?

Not per se, but the main programmer was Mitsuru Yaida, who went on to make Gunstar Heroes and Bangai-O, and is one of the big guys of Treasure.

Do you consider Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru a Trasure game just because Hiroshi Iuchi worked on it?

Treasure has been probably my favorite game company since renting Gunstar Heroes sometime in mid 90s and buying Mischief Makers when it launchef, both being two of my favorite games, along with so many of their other retro and non-retro games. However, I can understand why some people don't like their games: they are quintessential Jap-jank: from their short amount levels in every game to their (typically) strange, "low quality" character art design to their minimalist gameplay systems.

Almost like an indie company, too.

If anything their gameplay ideas are too gimmicky and random. Like how Headdy randomly becomes a belt scroller for one short section of the game, or the olympics stuff in Mischief Makers, or Dice Palace in GH.

I was going to add inconsistency and gimmicks, too, but I forgot about examples like those to use. I can recall some non-retro ones like in Super Heroes and Bangai-O Spirits, though.

Yeah good point, that adds to their "tech demo" reputation they are well known for. Very similar to cool but useless Eurojank effects.

I remember their works nothing but constantly being praised in gaming magazines of the 90s. I was excited for every release. I don't get the hate.
